[quote author=Olabodmit post=109274421]This morning I received from Niger “ hi you lost your phone redmi note 7 and i found it i'm in niger “. I was surprised when I saw the message. Though I couldn’t remember the precise date they stole this Redmi Xiaomi in my room at night, when I woke up I couldn’t find my phone again, I try to call it but it was switched off. Then I realized my phone has been stolen.

I went to Ikorodu police station to report the case, the outrageous amount they charged, made me decision to leave the phone. Instead of paying 40k to track the phone which I have no grantee of getting back.

I went back home very sad. As I was thinking about the stolen phone, my friend came to check me, then I collected his phone and log in to my mi account. I locked everything lockable from the mi account.

Since the year 2020 I didn’t hear anything until this morning, apparently I have even forget the phone cus I got a big phone after waiting 5 months. I was so surprised when the guy chat me and also send me the phone picture. The reason why I post this is that if you’re using Redmi xiaomi phone always make sure you activate the mi account. D thing secured die, they flashed it and the phone is still locked.

Now the Niger guy is begging me to give him the code? Should I give him or tell him to return to the seller?[/quote
Na to send me my own money too... REBUY

Tell him go pay you for the phone before you release the code
Re: My Stolen Phone Of 2 Years Was Found In Niger Republic by nesgeeek(m): 7:52pm On Jan 12, 2022
send him ur account details let him pay u the the amount u bought the phone before u give him the code. It doesn't matter whether he is honest or not, it's ur property and no sensible person will want to record loss. let him send u the money u use in purchasing it then u can send him the code. if not don't send him the let the phone be useless to him.

Re: My Stolen Phone Of 2 Years Was Found In Niger Republic by ameynuJR(m): 8:46pm On Jan 12, 2022
OP....I have almost same story as this. My Samsung galaxy A20 was stolen on 27 May 2020 just two months after buying, I tried tracking it but the phone is not connected to network according to the system. I use my Samsung account locked the phone, put down my contact incase they happened to turn on the phone just like you did.

Do not give out the code.... The cycle will just continue.
Let the buyer return it back to the seller.

Help the guy? Are you for real?
If he is an honest guy, he should find a way to send the phone back to its owner.
The fact you bought a stolen item does not confer ownership on you.
He should return the phone or buy it from the true owner.

Cook up story. I lost this same Xiaomi model with iCloud, they unluck the phone very very easy.
How did you know they unlock it? The Op phone was stolen 2 years ago,he too probably thinks the thief is using the phone, not knowing it hasn't been used since then.
You must lock your phone after it was stolen, having MI cloud account doesn't mean your phone is secured, the cloud account is to help you lock it remotely if stolen, and make it impossible to use.
This is common sense, but most nairalanders including you lacks it.

Look at how he started the conversation, that your phone lost and he found it.
Dont give him the code.
If you must, collect something as compensation.

Don't give out the code. Let him return it where he bought and ask for a refund. The reason you locked it is to protect your data and perhaps discourage such actions. Let me tell you, the person chatting you is in Nigeria. The probability of someone speaking such a sound English in Niger that speaks French is very very low. Getting a number from any country for WhatsApp chat is as easy as ABC. If you doubt, as the person his location in Niger, then tell him to call you on video call showing the location.

Don't give him the code he contacted you because he needs the code not because he is a good man. My thoughts though

I don't think you should give him the code...just like that. First, did he not open the phone wen he bought it before leaving the place? And if truly he got it from a street seller he has the option of taking it back there to seek refund. To give him the code let him pay you the pre-theft market value of the phone. My opinion though

In addition to giving him the code, you should also send him 100,000 Naira. What a question.

Don’t think you are being a ‘good guy’ by giving him the unlock code, you will be encouraging robbery. It is either he sends the phone to you or return it to where he bought it. People steal phones because there’s an easy market for them and we must do all we can to discourage such.

A lot of people have lost their lives because robbers wanted their phones. Doesn’t matter if you’ve moved on or not; please don’t give out that code!
ON POINT.
