Chief Salami Agbaje's House, Ibadan. Circa: 1930's

The beautiful masterpiece is still standing till today (Even though not properly maintained).

A wealthy man in the 1920's. Salami Agbaje was one of lbadan's indigenous entrepreneurs and textile dealer in the early 1920's. He was the first one to own a car in Ibadan.

His textile store in Gbaji area of lbadan was the Mecca for all sorts of people who come from the entire stretch of lbadan and Lagos to buy his wares.

However, the competition between the Lebanese and indigenous entrepreneurs increased the rate of insecurity for the latter, while the former continued to expand trading activities. For instance, Salami Agbaje reported had to quit textile trade because of them (Ojo, 1988, p. 30). Overall, the rivalry and competition did not favor Nigerian merchants.

Chief Salami Agbaje (Balogun of lbadan) died in 1953

Why share a picture taken centuries ago on a thread talking about how it still stands in 2022? What are we supposed to do with the old picture? It would have been a good reference if you had shared a recent one along with it.

The image below is a Catholic church in Paris (Notre Dame de Paris). It was built in 1163. It's 859 years currently.

You know the most fascinating thing? It still beat 90% of what Nigerian architect are designing today in terms of beauty.

Post the current picture of the house.

If you come Cambridge (UK), you go see buildings constructed in the 12th/13th Century standing strong and well maintained.

Thanks for opening this thread.

This is a very beautiful architecture, it would be nice if govt could acquire it as a historical monument and forbid it from ruin. There were many beautiful architectures like this on the landscape of Lagos Island, they are all wrecked and demolished. In their place we have ugly concrete with poor aesthetics. It is profoundly questionable why churches built in that era remain standing but private residents are torn down.

Anyway, on the above highlight, I want to add a piece of education here today and beg people to desist from calling Lebanese textile dealers merchants...or investors. They were not.

Many of amongst us are unaware the reason behind thousands of people from far away Middle East suddenly became residents in middle of Africa. In the armed conflict for liberation of Palestine and Jordan and Syria from clutches of foreign invaders from Europe many Lebanese and Syrians were impoverished in the war and became refugees. Britain had responsibility for their welfare. These refugees were resettled in British Africa. This is how Lebanese and Syrians ended up in West and East Africa - Ghana, Nigeria, Gambia, Kenya, Uganda, Somali, and so on.

Here in Nigeria they were resettled primarily in Kano, Ibadan and Lagos. This is why a large population of their descendants remain till today as citizens of Nigeria. From these three cities they spread out into other communities in small numbers.

Britain provided secluded place and built homes and stores in similar styles they were used to back home for them to live and trade. To prosper in a hostile land, Britain bent trade rules in their favor and forced indigeneous merchants to market through Lebanese & Syrian middlemen. Hence our local businessmen were forced to accept exchange rates and commissions at Lebanese price. You could not be a successful gold trader if you did not first subscribe to a Lebanese gold merchant. Your textile business did not prosper if you were not listed with a Lebanese textile agent.

Out of ignorance we called them Kora (Korea) because they had skin complexion and hair texture close to the Koreans.

Britain was an evil empire. They destroyed our resources, ruined our potentials and then used famined, homeless and impoverished Lebanese & Syrians to ret-ard our progress.
