NANS Denies Reports of Planned Protest on Third Mainland Bridge

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has debunked reports that it plans to block the ThirdMainland Bridge on Wednesday.

Its Vice President of External Affairs, Babatunde Afis, told Nigeria Info that no protests were planned for the day.

This is coming two days after the student union blocked access to the Murtala Muhammed Airport, in a bid to get the federal government to meet the demands of striking university lecturers.

The lecturers have been on strike since 14 February, complaining over inadequate infrastructure in universities, funding gaps, and their own welfare.

This has meant that students of federal government-owned universities have not been in class for seven months.

NANS earlier planned to protest at the Apapa Port Complex on Tuesday but shelved the plan.

PLAN YOUR MOVEMENT - 21/9/2022

And this was an earlier report.

We’re ready to ground Nigerian ports, 3rd Mainland Bridge – NANS

September 19, 2022

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS has expressed its readiness to ground the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA and the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.

In statement signed by its Chairman, NANS National Taskforce on #EndASUUStrikeNow, Ojo Raymond, on Monday, the student body said it is ready to go on a week-long protest till the Federal Government accedes to its demands on the resolution of the strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The statement reads, “For the past few days, we have been protesting simultaneously round the states of the country to protest the continued ASUU strike which has lasted over seven months as a result of the ‘crass irresponsibility’ of the Federal Government to fulfil the terms of the agreement they willingly signed with ASUU.

“As an association, we are saddened by this development which has resulted in the closure of universities . And, this act, we believe, is deliberate by the Federal Government to deny the children of the common Nigerian access to quality education which violates the provisions of Chapter two of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

“We are using this medium to reiterate that this protest continues and that we will not for any reason back down until the Federal Government takes the educational sector as a priority. It is quite pathetic that the Federal Government is making use of the armed forces to quench a genuine struggle of Nigerian students despite the fact that these officers are also victims of the system whose children are also affected the same way we are.

“Today’s protest at Muritala Muhammed International Airport (Domestic and International wings) is just a preamble of what is to come in days ahead. And, we are informing the general public and the international community to pay serious attention to this struggle because we have been duly informed of the plan of the Federal Government to mobilise heavily against this protest.

“This was even witnessed today as anti-riot police officers and men of the Air Force were mobilised to attack us not until they were prevented by the mass of Nigerian students.

“We maintain that this protest shall last a week here in Lagos State and would be held simultaneously at the Muritala Muhammed International Airport, Nigerian Ports Authority and the third mainland bridge until our demands are met.

Recall that NANS, on Monday, grounded the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

The students could be seen with placards carrying inscriptions, “No nation can develop without genuine commitment to education,” and “If you have money for election form, you can fund education.”

The protest was greeted by traffic gridlock amid the presence of a combined team of officers of the Lagos State Police Command, Rapid Response Squad, Lagos Airport Police Command, and other security agencies.

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore also joined students at the protest.

What will it take this current crop of Federal Govt to listen to the voice of its youths. It seems protests is no longer working. Dialoging also doesnt works because of incompetency of its federal characters.

This is the result of our lack of foresight it the 2019 election.

Dont make the same mistake come 2023.

Vote competence against religious and ethnic linings.

The students should stick to the airport. Let them arrange to go to the crude oil exit point next week.

They will go back to school the following week if they all come out in throngs.

Ask them to demand more now that they have the chance. The students now have the chance to hijack this election and play to the party that is willing to come out and stand for the right of the students.

They should ask for more now. This is their chance. Reduced fees, revamped campuses, job opportunities. There is no reason why a Nigerian student will just go to class and go back to their hostels. These are functioning citizens that can last hours in bed. Why can't they also be afforded work?

A student should be able to work at minimum of 20 hours a week.

Go for gold, students. Do not settle for the old dust

Is Lagos now the federal capital territory? For her to be the first target? Why not start from Abuja? Why not direct your grievance to the seat of power? Please isn't it better we stop playing around issues?

IPOB miscreants at work. They are hellbent on destroying Lagos state just like during endsars. Otherwise, any protest should be happening in the FCT, they should be chanting Buhari's name at Aso villa and NASS. But their target is Lagos state that is not the seat of the government, I always shake my head for some gullible and weak Yoruba supporting them.

Sense must have started setting in. You NANS are in court and at same time out on the street breaking the law because of some politicians.
How do you want the court to take you serious?

They are making a mockery of intellectual student activism.

IS LAGOS OR TINUBU THE PROBLEM OF NIGERIA, MUST WE ALWAYS VENT THE ANGER OF NATIONAL PROBLEMS ON LAGOS OR TINUBU AT ALL TIMES?

Is it only Lagos that has airports? Bridges? Are there no airports in PH, Enugu, Awka, Owerri, Kano, Kaduna or are there no universities there. Or is the FG who ASUU is fighting not based in Abuja? Wouldn't it be more effective and embarrassing to the FG to shut down Abuja airport?

The same thing with endsars, was it only in Lagos that people experience police brutality? Isn't the IG in Abuja?

The way we are happy at people destroying the SW is not good. Aren't we assisting our enemies to destroy us. Over 300 public buses were burnt in Lagos - those buses didn't belong to Tinubu or his family, they belong to all of us, but we were seem to be happy when they were burnt down.

I want NANS to demonstrate, I want an end to Police brutality but if it is going to be sectional, then it is not right.

It seems as if every error in Nigeria is either committed by Tinubu or by LASG whereas outside the SW, some of the other parts are simply war zones. No one protest them. No one talks about them. The focus is on Lagos and Tinubu. It seems our success is also our problem.

2 Sundays ago, a senator's convoy was attacked, by Tuesday, no one was talking about it. Were it to be Lagos, Punch would have written an editorial, Obi would have spoken, Afenifere would have said it was Tinubu that initiated the attack to kill him. The SM would be screaming of MC Oluomo, Tinubu's creation. Instead, mum is the word.

This hypocrisy is disturbing.

Let us not rejoice when our enemies are surreptitiously destroying us as we are then complicit or in acquiescence.

Throwback:
Later they will say Naija no be Lagos, yet na only Lagos dey fight for Nigeria.

Abi na Lagos Education Minister dey?

Na Lagos Buhari dey?

Na Lagos ASUU dey meet?

Obviously, na Lagos get Naija, and the Lagos city boy is on a mission to lead Nigeria to greater heights.

Some zombiedients are in pain already.

I am not igbo.
I am a proud Yoruba man.

Channel your aggression accordingly.

This is not about Lagos. Lagos today and Lagos tomorrow. This is lives of your fellow citizens. If they turn to revolution with guns and armory, even you will run out of that Lagos.

It is a peaceful protest protected by the constitution. Respect that!

Lagos is also inhabited by Igbos so what affect Yorubas affect them too. For 7 months these kids do not know their future. They are also Yoruba students too. It is too much

You are a very bad person if you call this a tribal movement. Let the kids handle this the way they know how to. For seven months they have waited for you and the wise ones to speak for them but you chose silence over their future.

Step aside and continue mute because they do not want to listen to you anymore.

All you care about is your selfish interest. The youths are both Muslims and Christians. This movement trumps religious partisanship. You can keep attacking christians while your teeth will decay right in your mouth
