Boko Haram: What Obasanjo discussed with family
• Fresh meeting likely in 3 weeks

More facts have emerged on why former President Olusegun Obasanjo visited Maiduguri, Thursday afternoon. Also, insight into what transpired at the meeting Obasanjo had with families of the Boko Haram members murdered in July, 2009 has emerged.

Competent sources in the meeting told Saturday Sun that spokesperson of families Obasanjo met, Babakura Alhaji Fugu, gave the former president conditions on which the group would stop hostilities, as first step towards achieving the much-desired lasting peace.

An insider revealed that Babakura, son of the murdered 76-year-old Alhaji Baba Fugu Mohammed, said the court judgment of Tuesday, April 13, 2010 be complied with fully, as the starting point.

According to Babakura, it was gathered, Hon Justice Mohammed Mustapher of the Borno State High Court 3, Maiduguri, had given the judgment in favour of the family, when it dragged the federal and state governments before it. Obasanjo was said to have demanded the copy of the judgment, and estimate of the compensation expected from the government.

The family was said to have given him estimate of the property destroyed by agents of government, who moved in with a bulldozer and levelled the family compound after killing the breadwinner.

In the court judgment, which copy Saturday Sun got, the judge had declared, among others that:
• Extra judicial murder of the applicant’s father, Alhaji Baba Fugu Mohammed, by the respondents is illegal, unconstitutional and a violation of his right to life as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the African charter and the universal declaration of human rights.

• The detention of and subsequent execution of Alhaji Baba Fugu Mohammed on July 31, 2009 by the respondents was unconstitutional and a violation of his right to fair hearing, as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the African charter and the universal declaration of human rights.
• The respondents are hereby ordered to exhume the corpse of the deceased, Baba Fugu Mohammed, wherever it is and release same to his family for a decent burial.

• The respondents are hereby ordered to jointly and severally apologise to the applicant for their reprehensive and unconstitutional acts.
• The respondents and their agents wherever they may be are hereby restrained from harassing or intimidating the applicant.
• The president, Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Attorney General of the Federation, the Inspector General of Police, the executive governor of Borno State and the Attorney General and commissioner of justice, Borno State, the 1st to 5th respondents in this case, are hereby ordered jointly and severally to pay to the applicant the sum of One Hundred Million Naira (N100, 000, 000.00) in compensation to the applicant.

Government counsel, Yusuf Ali, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) had filed an appeal against the judgment. The next hearing date is fixed for Monday, September 19, 2011.
On citing the document, Obasanjo was said to have expressed utter shock, saying that he never knew that they ever went to court and got favourable judgment, revealed our sources.
Saturday Sun gathered that aside this, the family also handed Obasanjo a picture of the mutilated body of their father, after the brutal murder.

The former president was said to have told the meeting that he merely came to condole with the families over the killing of their breadwinner and find lasting solution to the lingering crises and blood letting.

He was said to have promised to pass, to the Federal Government the facts he gathered from the meeting and requested for three weeks within which he will get back to them. He told the family that now that he stepped into the matter, a lasting solution has come.
Our investigations also revealed that series of letters had been written to the Federal Government through office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice by the family lawyers, Anayo Adibe & Partners, in Maiduguri, requesting to settle the matter out of court. None of the letters were acknowledged.
The peace meeting, held in Maiduguri under closed door, was said to have been brokered by a Kaduna-based foremost human rights activist

What is going on in nigeria is a fight of good versus evil.Obj is evil,he cannot fight evil, just like the rest of nigerian leadership and rogue system.

Boko haram projects ultimate evil, same is nigerian government, one attracts the other and both belongs to the same realm of darkness. If nigeria is true to herself, obj will be in jail for life, never to see the light of the day.And here he is trying to cajole peace.
Re: Boko Haram Family Demands N100M Compensation in Talks with OBJ by okadaman2: 12:43am On Sep 17, 2011
I did not see any mention of trial or promise of death penalty for whomever carried out the extra judicial killing  undecided

When a society constantly refuses to punish people for crimes committed, it makes a mockery of it's laws, it's existence and communal peace.

A. Whomever killed the man should be tried and sentenced to death. Right thing to do!

B. All killers in Boko Haram should be tried and sentenced to death. Right thing to do!

When a society fails to do what is right. It should not expect progress and peace. So until we start punishing people for the crimes they actually commit based on our laws as written down, we are going no where.

I see nothing good coming out of this. It's the same old same.

If more of us can reason like this and not allow sentiments, ignorance and laziness take over our minds, Nigeria will become great indeed.

You understand the fundamental issue. Most don't, that's why we still have this dysfunctional joke of a country.

And I was supporting his mature move in one thread. oma se.

So beaf, did you say  GEJ "okayed" this visit and the N100m negotiation?
Re: Boko Haram Family Demands N100M Compensation in Talks with OBJ by umechuma: 5:15am On Sep 17, 2011
This is a sad development to negotiate with a terrorist.
OBJ has destroyed Nigeria economically and now laying a new foundation for its total collapse, only time will tell.
Re: Boko Haram Family Demands N100M Compensation in Talks with OBJ by Sagewood: 7:18am On Sep 17, 2011
OBJ is a BIG disgrace! The case is still in the appeal process and Boko Haram is unleashing mayhem in the
name of revenge for the death of their father.
Let them allow the court process to run its course and justice to prevail and not resort to jungle justice and terrorism.
GEJ is a spineless leader and BH and their supporters know this fact and will exploit it to the full.
All BH bombers and merchants of death must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Let OBJ go back to Otta and stop making a mockery of the justice system.

embarassed

Just yesterday, we said this would prove violence is synonymous with prosperity, govt patronage and political influence!

100Million, public apology Why not an hour behind GEJ's butt too?

So how much is to be paid to EACH of the over 1000 they killed PRIOR to that AND after?

Funnily, they have basically said "YES, WE ARE KILLERS and nothing dem born una to do about it and if you no quick pay, ALUTA (bombs) CONTINUA" yet OBJ got up and left peacefully when same OBJ had his car pelted with pure water and had a child charged to court for that!

This country get as e be!
Re: Boko Haram Family Demands N100M Compensation in Talks with OBJ by PINKBABE: 7:59am On Sep 17, 2011
my question is - if this family will be given 100m for a soul that was slaughtered what then happens to hundreds if not thousands of nigerians they have killed who will compensate them cos i know that there are bread winners among them, nobody have gone to their family for condolence, what a shameful people in our country.
Re: Boko Haram Family Demands N100M Compensation in Talks with OBJ by stonedlive(m): 8:06am On Sep 17, 2011
so if i am to make sense of all this
the family of the boko haram's dead leader are somewhat aggrieved
for the torture and slaying of their family members
so while obj can visit and commiserate with them.
how many of the victims family killed by their son and his followers
have they visited. the victims families should also sue them and get courts to
award mega millions to them also.
after all whatever is good for the goose would definitely sit well

Why is it that most of you cant read? Is this how bad our educational system has become?

The report says a court asked that they be compensated. A law court. What dont you people understand there? Is English language so difficult to understand? The report didnt say GEJ or OBJ promised them any money. A court ordered the compensation. If you are not happy with that, your anger should be at the judge. IS GEJ now the judge? How thus that mean GEJ is negotiating with terrorist? If the court of appeal upholds the judgement, are you saying GEJ should not comply? Why is Nairaland filled with people who cant read and cant argue intelligently?

Re: Boko Haram Family Demands N100M Compensation in Talks with OBJ by Nobody: 9:05am On Sep 17, 2011
OBJ is a great man. Without his visit, we would never know that a court has ordered Federal Government and its agents to pay 100m naira compensation to the family of the murdered BH Chieftain. Why are we going to the Appeal Court ?  If the Feds had paid this compensation, the project BH would not have been hijacked by enemies of Jonathan. If GEJ understands the dynamics of violence hijack by the CIA, he will settle this out of court. If not, just like militias hijacked the BH project and started bombing in the name of BH, the CIA will hijack the project and commence hardcore terrorism for overtake of our oil reserves. Am sorry to say that most nairalanders are able to read and write, but most of them are truly idiots in their reasoning.  USA said they cant negotiate with terrorists, Nigeria didnt say they cant. MUST you be guided by the tenets of USA ? AMerica has fought terrorism for over 10 yrs with billions of dollars and the most powerful military might in the world. Have they worn ? You guys know the Answer. There is nothing as good as round table peace talks.
Re: Boko Haram Family Demands N100M Compensation in Talks with OBJ by Orblonde: 9:11am On Sep 17, 2011
Any apologies to MASSOB? Or where they not violent enough to earn regret. Nigeria seems to not respect non-violence and that is encouraging uncivil behaviour. What is more sad is the Nigerian way of rationale that approves this gesture but endorses the persecution of peaceful protesters

In all things, we all need peace in this country.
Re: Boko Haram Family Demands N100M Compensation in Talks with OBJ by edicolove: 9:47am On Sep 17, 2011
We must understand the difference between ethno/religious crisis/conflict and normal criminal activities like kidnapping, armed robbery and even normal terrorism like you find in many other countries or the world. What boko aram is doing is terrorism, but it has its root in ethtno/religious differences. If you just roll out the tanks in an ethno/religious conflict, you stand the risk of genocide. In as much as those doing the bombings should be found and prosecuted, the government should also address the root issues that encourage its rise and spread. One thing we should commend OBJ for, is that he has done what the so called northern leaders, IBB, Sultan, Buhari, etc could not do. If you allow yourself to be filled with hatred, so much that you cannot acknowledge a good thing but are quick to bash it just because you dont like the person doing it, then you are worse than the person you are accusing

Please the title of this thread is wrong and we should not allow NL to become another Saharareporters. If this site become like Saharareporters, then where do you want us to go next? You posted a topic that is completely at variance with the report you posted. The report indicates a court awarded a 100 million compensation to the BH leader's family but you posted that they are demanding 100 million. The title is very misleading please. You need to pass the truth to Nigerians, not sensational half truths.

Thank you

Do you think paying the compensation will stop the bombing? You and I know that this Boko Haram issue has gone politital. Their sponsors are politicians whose aim is to distabilise the current govt. The problem will have is the power strugle between the North and the South.
SOLUTION:
1. Make political office unattractive (cut down salaries and wages)
2. Fight corruption by jailing anyone caught in the act.
3. Restructure our Judicial system. (Our current system, only the poor go to prison why they asked the rich to return part of what they took).
4. Appropriate distribution of economic resources which will lead to the increase of standard of living of the people.

^^^So the FG should disobey the court order? and you guys will come back here saying the president does not follow court orders. The FG has appealed. If the higher court upturns the judgement of the lower court, then thats it. If they uphold it, then it is not an option for the FG. The law is the law.

So is the message now that the means of getting the attention of govt is violence? If we do not arrest and jail (treason) corrupt office holders and publish the results of investigation (as influenced as many of them may be) into enquires then there is no point in any attempt to resolve this problem. Public office will remain attractive to criminals!
Re: Boko Haram Family Demands N100M Compensation in Talks with OBJ by edicolove: 10:38am On Sep 17, 2011
So what is the connection between public office holders/corruption and Boko haram pacification?
Re: Boko Haram Family Demands N100M Compensation in Talks with OBJ by cold(m): 11:44am On Sep 17, 2011
Funny thing is while we're here arguing, the money will be paid with a new house thrown in for good measure.Nigeria is the only country I know that negotiates with terrorists.
On the flip side,if this is truly a court ruling then the federal government would have to abide by it or file an appeal.I would suggest the latter
