Adesokan’s discovery which has potential to change the way mankind responds to disease pathogens, according to experts, may bring an end the era of increased burden of drug resistance in the world particularly, in sub Saharan Africa.

2 Nigerians win at 2011 African Bankers awards

Lagos – Two Nigerian banks and two Nigerians have emerged winners of the 2011 African Bankers awards being organised by the African Banker magazine.

The banks and the Nigerians were named winners of the awards on Saturday night in Washington D.C.

The event took place at the venue of the just-concluded IMF/World Bank annual meetings.

The magazine, in statement made available to NAN on Sunday in Abuja, named the banks as First Bank Nigeria Plc and Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc.

The individual Nigerian winners are the Managing Director of the Bank of Industry (BOI), Evelyn Oputu, and Mr Adebayo Ogunlesi.

In the awards ceremony witnessed by about 300 African and foreign stakeholders, First Bank picked the Most Innovative Bank of the Year award.

Stanbic IBTC, on its part, was a joint winner of the Deal of the Year award.

Oputu was named one of the most revered businesswomen in Africa and internationally.

She was also honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award and set a new record for being the first woman to receive this particular award.

Ogunlesi, whose bank or financial institution, was not mentioned at the ceremony got the award of the African Banker Icon.

Other winners included the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Kenya’s largest bank by depositors, Equity Bank, Dr James Mwangi and Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Mr Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile.

NAN reports that Mwangi was declared African Banker of the Year for the second year in a row at this year’s African Bankers Awards.

Standard Bank Group of South Africa got the African Banker of the Year award, while the Best Local Bank of the Year award went to Millennium BIM.

EFG-Hermes of Egypt received the Investment Bank of the Year award.

In the other categories, the Investment Fund/Private Equity Fund of the Year award went to Actis of United Kingdom.

EB–Accion Savings and Loans Company of Ghana won the Micro-finance Institution/Project of the Year while the Socially-Responsible Bank of the Year award went to National Bank of Egypt.

Earlier, Omar Ben-Yedder, Group Publisher of the African Banker magazine, had said the Egyptian revolution had not stopped the resolve with two winners from Egypt.

“In fact, what these past few years have taught us is that we have financial institutions that have been able to show resilience in the midst of uncertainty and global shocks, something which would not have been possible two decades back.

“We are seeing Africans showing the lead. For example, new regulations in Nigeria have ring-fenced commercial banking from investment banking.

“And this happened in Africa before the UK and at London the world’s financial centre. I’m confident, and tonight with the quality on show, my belief is strengthened,” he said.

The African Bankers Awards is organised by the African Banker magazine, IC Events and BusinessinAfrica Events.

It was a landmark event taking place every year during the IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings.

The awards brought together industry players and government officials from Africa and around the world.

The ceremony was meant to honour the achievements of companies and individuals who contributed to reforms, modernisation and expansion of the continent’s banking and financial system.(NAN)

Nigerian wins U.S. grant for oil spill clean-up grant = Free money.

Team Leader, Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF), Nigeria, Dr. Morufat Balogun has received a grant to execute a proposal to tackle oil spillage with a local plant.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the $28,000 grant from the United States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (USBECA) was presented to Dr. Balogun, who lectures at the Department of Crop Protection and Environmental Biology, University of Ibadan, on Saturday.
The proposal, titled, KENAF Clean-up: Countering Oil Spills in the Niger Delta with Local Plants, was the only one selected in Nigeria, from 638 entries from all over the world.
Speaking with NAN after the presentation, Dr. Balogun said the proposal is geared towards finding solution to environmental problem in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.
``We all know that there is massive oil spillage in Niger Delta which is causing a lot of conflicts and so the solution logically lies in cleaning the environment and making it free of oil spills.
``Recently we know that it has been stated in United States that this plant called `Kenaf’ and `Dorama’ in the Northern part of Nigeria, which closely resembles `Rozel’, used for `zobo’ and also in the same family with Okro, can be used to clean the oil spillage.
``This crop can grow easily in Nigeria without special efforts and as explained, will be used to mop the oil spills. But Nigeria is not looking in the way of `Kenaf’ yet; there is so much problems in the area of oil spillage, “she said.
Dr. Balogun said the Kenaf Clean-up team, comprising 16 alumni and 14 volunteers who are exceptionally skilled and diverse in their chosen professions were ready to kick-start the project in November.
``The project is going to start in November. We are going to collect Kenaf diversity all over Nigeria; we are going to curate it and characterise and conserve them in a chamber at the University of Ibadan.
``And we are going to have stakeholder’s workshop, where all stakeholders on oil spillage; the communities, the youths, the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency and the oil companies will be brought together at a workshop. Their interests, we will try and fulfil it as much as possible so that we can reach a central point and develop a strategy that is community integrated and safe to the environment,’’ the don added.

Prior to her visit to South Africa, Mrs Obama had in a televised video released by the White House announcing the first lady’s visit to Africa acknowledged Toyosi as one of 76 Young African women leaders she was prepared to meet across the African continent.

Michelle Obama in her own words said: “We will be looking forward to women like Toyosi, she is a 28-year-old from Nigeria, who every year, assembles 50,000 people for the largest youth conference in the country.

And the rest. . .

I design for trendsetters, not fashion follwers - Asake Agoro, awards-winning London-based designer

Nigeria’s designer, Asake Agoro is a celebrated fashion designer in London, the United Kingdom (UK). Her label, Asakeoge won her the 2010 BEFTA Award in the UK, as the Best Female Fashion Designer of the Year, the year she emerged a runner up for the African Tourism Awards. This piece showcases the ingenuity of Asakeoge, best known as a third generation seamstress in the UK.

ASAKE Agoro is an award-winning Nigerian designer based in the United Kingdom.

She is the owner of the rave making couture branded Asakeoge which she launched under The Vintage Philosophy collection label.

The label caters for everyday need of fashionable women, especially in the provision of dresses for all occasions, whether office wear, night dresses, party dresses and others which are either formal or casual wear.

Asake, in her own words said her interest for going into fashion designing is hinged on her passion for creativity, individuality and the need to make a mark through personal style.

“My passion for individuality is apparent in every work I create, for me the wow-factor is non-negotiable in my hand- made garments. Asake said.

Some of her collections include “ready to wear” dresses, such as “couture roots with exaggerated shoulders, cinched waists and sharp silhouettes.”

“With this collection, we are saying less is more. Taking inspiration from favourite silhouettes of the 1920s to the 1980s; bell bottom pants from the 70s, bubble hems, an exaggerated shoulder here, a cinched waist there, a colourful pattern here and there.

“Classic and effortless elegance, is more about the woman, how you carry yourself says a lot about you,” Asake said.

Speaking further on what inspired her to go into fashion designing, Asake said “I grew up in a creative household with a grandmother who was a seamstress and a mum who was an interior decorator.

“It was only natural that I acquired some of their creative skills that led me to start making my own garments from age 15.”

What of her creativity, especially in relating her designs with the African style?

“For me, designing is as much a part of me as my heritage. My designs express who I am as a person.

“I like to stand out and be unique and the use of bold prints and cutting edge designs reflect this. “I design for women who are not afraid to be different and be trendsetters rather than fashion followers.

Her most remarkable experience was when she won the BEFFTA Award for best Female Fashion Designer in the UK.

“I have had so many remarkable experiences; I would say the most recent one was when I won the BEFFTA Award for best Female Fashion Designer in the UK. “It is very good to have all your hard work and creativity acknowledged by such a wide audience,” Asake said, adding that her goal is “to grow an international luxury women’s wear brand recognised all over the world.”

Your make-up portfolio should reflect your true potential Funmi Odegbami, founder, MINK London won Make Up Artist of the Year

Funmi Moriah Odegbami, also known in the fashion world as Funmi O, is a Make-up Artist and the founder  of MINK, an international make-up artist management company and a make-up school in the United Kingdom (UK). Glamour takes a look at the efforts of this young, but great Nigerian, who is going places with her beauty business which recently fetched her the Make Up Artist of the Year award.

Background
FUNMI Moriah Odegbami is an expert beauty technician, who specialises in traditional beauty to high-concept, airbrush make-up and special effects. She is also the co-owner of an event management company, Endeavour. She and her pro-team of make-up artists are the brain behind the supply of make-up for Nigeria’s Next Top Model pageant.

A multi-talented technician, she combines beauty work with web design, graphic design and branding with  her DezineKoncepts company, where she works with entertainers and small and medium sized companies using brand strategies to achieve their strategic goals.

They are also the brain behind the scenes of Channel 5’s  “Make Me a Supermodel,” a British reality television modelling competition, while she also provided the make-up for May7ven’s recent photo shot at the back of the music video of the debut single, Hands up.

Combining beauty work with teaching
While working as a make-up expert, Funmi  also organises teaching programmes for intending make-up artists, and to fully institutionalise her interest in passing her knowledge to others, she developed the Beginners Course in Professional Make-up with make-up tutor, Sonji Clayton, all within her first year of establishing MINK.

Achievements
Her testimony to her teaching career in make-up business is that many of her students have gone on to become reputable make-up professionals in their own right.

In 2010, Funmi was able  to establish MINK London, MINK California, MINK Europe and MINK Nigeria, and is still  planning to expand into new markets this year running.

[flash=200,200]http://Collaboration with Sam Fine[/flash]
Last year, she made history by bringing celebrity make-up genius, Sam Fine to the UK to teach his first ever make-up master class and seminar to an audience of over 50 attendees.

The event was called The Beauty of Make-up Seminar with Sam Fine. Sam Fine has been described as the international make- up genius, who is the hand behind gorgeous faces of most  international celebrities,  like Jennifer Hudson and Naomi Campbell.

Funmi collaborated with Illamasqua to host the seminar at her Beak Street store, London. The event was also sponsored by Iman Cosmetics and Ellis Faas. This event is another testimony to the extent to which Funmi, a Nigerian make-up expert has gone in projecting her fashion business and Nigeria’s image abroad.

Corporate partnership
Similarly, this year, Funmi established a partnership with Mahogany international in what is described as “an exclusive one year deal” which will see her pro-team providing the makeup services for Mahogany’s three major UK shows: Mahogany Brides, Top Model of Colour and Fashion diversity

Funmi established a relationship with Africa Fashion Week London for the first ever Africa Fashion Week London  2011.

This year, she also setup the first Make-up Artist Network (MAN), which is a networking forum focusing on creating an environment solely aiming at make-up artists, photographers, stylists, models, fashion/beauty editors, cosmetics brands, and production companies.

Funmi on how to become a make-up artist
Before you actually become a make-up artist, you need to build a make-up artist portfolio that will be used to display your talents to potential clients and employers. Without this important tool it will be difficult for prospective employers to know what your capabilities are or even in which category of make-up you specialise.

On  how to build your portfolio
When building your portfolio make sure that the photography, lighting and models are of the highest studio quality. Your make-up portfolio should reflect your true potential. It is the one thing that will separate you from the competition and show clients what you are capable of. Building your portfolio is easy. The hard part is making it good.
