Governor Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar of Zamfara State, has disclosed that no fewer than 1.2 million beggars (Almajiris) are roaming the streets of the state. The governor who was speaking to newsmen on monday as part of the celebrations of Nigeria at 51, Zamfara at 15 and Sharia at 12 on Monday in Gusau, said, “we have a long way to go to put things on the right path.”

Governor Yari who promised to modernise the sharia legal system practised in the state, confirmed that in the next six days there may be amputation of two persons sentenced by the sharia court in the state.

According to him, the issue of street begging was something to be worried about as presently there are 1.2m beggars (Almajiris) roaming the streets of Zamfara State.
He assured that very soon he would assist them (Almajiris) in having western education, while calling on wealthy individuals and organizations to assist as it has to be a collective responsibility.
He maintained that very soon, government would arrest the situation (streets begging), adding that it was not an easy task.

On the situation of the state since he came in as the Governor of the state, barely four months, Governor Yari revealed that he met about 480 uncompleted projects with N42 billion debts in the state.
He explained that a committee was set up to verify abandoned and uncompleted projects, which as of the time he was speaking to newsmen in the state, he had paid N15.2 billion to genuine contractors.

The two amputees will add to the 35% beggers. Yerima is in the senate enjoying his loots with his two hands intacts and yet u cut the hands of a man who steal a cow, this can only happen in a crazy country.

but the amputation of petty thieves is also contributing to it na.

The official figure for the number of almajiri's in Nigeria has been 9.5million. It is a very frightening number thats higher than the population figures of two thirds of the countries in the World.
The truth is even worse when you realise that the figure of 9.5million has been in place since 2006. Without doubt, that figure cannot be static and would have grown with increasing levels of poverty and an increasing population. My unscientific guess is that the true figure lies somewhere between 11 and 20million.

An obvious consequence of Sharia law . . . . .

Why cant those states be detached from Nigeria and merged with Niger?

They make me feel ashamed to claim Nigeria.

Why are all these political pen robbers in the North not amputated? I thought they have Sharia system in place

Acquire western education?. Has he heard of Boko Haram before?. Anyway, the 1.2M almajiris may not all be Zamfara indigenes, they may be Abia or Imo migrants from the south east cos I saw some of them in ekene diili chukwu.

Now, I get it, all these luxury buses transporting Igbo beggers into the sahara desert. I have even wondered about the 1.2m number too. The whole of old sokoto state and province barely had upto 1.2million people to start with

No trash talk here. Zamfara state is one of those "miraculous" desert northern states that disobeyed all known geophysical laws to present more residents than a thick forest state like Bayelsa, or Imo.
Only in Nigeria do we have 'more people inhabiting empty desert regions than do forest areas'. If 35 % of Zamfara are beggers, it means that the state has more than 5million inhabitants, a figure that defies all reasons, not that reasons matter in Nigeria though.
When we make every counted adult pay some form of tax that's when we will truely know the correct census figures, not when the figure is simply a basis for splittign the national cake.

Yes in the north, there are desertified parts but Urban areas are well congested. Imo or Bayelsa have very small land mass compared to northern states. You have to understand that not everyone in Imo or Bayelsa live in the forest and not every one in Zamfara live in the desert.

Lastly, figures are not quoted based on any national cake. Even before independence, the north has always been more populated but of course the south has more population density due to land mass.

Before Waziri became incharge of the ministry that ran the census, the east, the east alone was adjudged more populous than the whole north. As the British prepared to handover to the north, it became necessary to revise census figures so as to give them a simple majority in Lagos. Since after then census figures have become a victim of political manipulation instead of a science tool to plan for birth, school enrollment, development and death.

Not surprised about Zamfara, the "volume" of almajiri in Katsina is shocking not to talk of poorer Zamfara.

Forget census figures, Northern Governors are useless. Infact the entire system of government in the north is so pathetic and has no bearing with the realities of modern day life. While their judiciary continues to amputate more and more of their local citizens, you need to see the way their governors and political leaders throw away money and resources on frivolities.
I believe the north is seriously dragging development in Nigeria backward! For every one step Nigeria takes, the North takes ten steps backward!
When you cut off a human beings arms for stealing, and you dont provide any means by which such a person can survive, what else do you expect?
these amputees have responsibilities, families to take care of. There is no amount of western education that will see to these needs and thereof keep him off the streets.

Hausa beggars are very where in Nigeria, even in the fct. they'll cut the leg of young men of about 20 yrs because of a silly act. they terminate the prospective future of these men and leave them begging for money. i wonder why the stupid dumb sharia law got its origin.
