No one expected the war to last this long including Putin. He thought it will be like Crimea operation in 2014.
In war there is always casualties on both sides. Both leaders are in dilemma. Zelensky doesn't want to give up land and Putin can't stop or withdraw without ksome form of achievement.

Preventing Ukraine from joining NATO. Taking four regions and demilitarizing Ukrainian military. Ukraine share a 40km boarder with Russia while Finland and Sweden share 1-2000 km boarder with Russia which is still far that’s a gain to NATO not Ukraine.
