Nigerian govt enrolls 110,000 military veterans into NHIS – Minister

September 21, 2023

The Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Matawalle, has said that no fewer than 110,000 military retirees have been enrolled into the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS.

Mr Matawalle made the disclosure during an interactive session with military retirees groups on Thursday in Abuja.

Represented by Dr Olajide Johnson, the Director, Health Services, Matawalle restated the Federal Government’s committment towards providing adequate healthcare for both serving and retired military personnel.

The theme of the meeting is: “Advancing the Health Care of Military Veterans”.

The meeting was convened by the Defence Health Maintenance Ltd (DHML), the Health Maintenance Organisation incharge of healthcare provision for military personnel under the NHIS.

The minister said that the Federal Government initially enrolled about 20,000 military retirees when the insurance scheme took off.

”Today, we have enrolled no fewer than 110,000 retirees, and the enrollment is still ongoing.

”The essence is to take care of the health needs of our military personnel after active service. I think that our veterans are lucky,” he said.

Mr Matawale urged the beneficiaries to make adequate use of the scheme in the interest of their health.

”It is your right to be catered for at this period of your lives. At this stage what takes most of your money is your health.

”We are happy that the narrative has changed, the government now caters for you even after you have served the nation,” Mr Matawalle said.

The minister commended DHML for giving priority to the healthcare needs of military retirees in its insurance package.

In his speech, the Managing Director of DHML, Rear Adm. Bayo Afolayan (Rtd), said that the essence of the meeting was to educate the military retirees on the benefits of the NHIS.

Mr Olaniyan said that military retirees would access the health insurance package without deductions from their pensions

”We are here to enlighten you about the scheme. It is not true that your pension is being tempered with, nobody is touching any retiree’s money, it is free.

”The package is for you, your spouses and children, and you will enjoy it for life,” he said.

Also speaking, the Head, Administration, DHML, Cdr. Tunde Alabi (Rtd), noted that there was appreciable awareness about the scheme, and more retired military personnel had come out to enroll.

He said that DHML was committed to ensuring quality healthcare delivery for the military veterans, and urged them to take advantage of the scheme.

sad Meaning all these gallant veterans were never under NHIS cover while they served this nation especially those who died gruesome deaths while in service e.g the victims of the C-130 Hercules NAF-911 crash of September 26 1992?

110,000 x by allocation per head (insurance scheme for one month)
110,000 x 100000 based on they are retired military personel = 1. 1e10

See let them all die by the guns and evil they used in their youthful age.

A very welcoming development by Tinubu's administration.

The National Health Insurance law was first introduced in 2004, however, it was not until last year that a regulatory body was formed as a result of new provisions made in a new Federal Act. I am afraid that it is wrong to give credit to Tinubu's administration.

On Thursday 19th of May, 2022, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria announced that he had signed a new National Health Insurance Authority Act 2022 into law. The new law repealed the National Health Insurance (NHIS) Act of 2004, which had introduced the concept of National Health Insurance to Nigeria.

Sad but true. cry

Back in 2021...

The military authorities yesterday called for a review of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to cover the treatment of personnel wounded in theatres of war.

It also called for coverage of high tech diagnostic surgeries and cardiovascular cases not captured by NHIS

He stated that treatment of cardiovascular cases were handled outside the scheme.

“Cases like gunshot wound and cardiovascular injury are not covered and we need the NHIS to take it into consideration. In his remarks, the Chief of Medical Services of the Nigerian Navy, Commodore Ibrahim Nurudeen, called for a review of the NHIS Act to cover cases of operational injuries.

“We are making a presentation to the NHIS so that the act can be reviewed.

Lol...even the student loan is not new. Even the removal of subsidy was advocated for by Jonathan, I can go on and on. Government is a continuous process. It's funny how the lapses of this administration is not traced to the past too? grin

That we ascribe initiatives put in place by past administrations to the current one? shocked

That we acknowledge efforts made in ensuring a better life for all. It's a relay, the baton of governance is passed from one person to another with each having a responsibility to continue from where others stopped. If during your own race you are able to build on the formers momentum then you should be appreciated. It's as simple as that. Thank you for digging into the past in order to enlighten us that, this particular achievement did not beginning today but a continuation of a process.
