Hardship: Nigerian Economy Not In Mess – Ex-British Council Director, Roberts by Ibrahimcoomasie: 4:46am On Mar 05
Former British Council Director in Abuja, David Roberts, said Nigeria’s economy which posted a GDP growth of 3.46% in Quarter 4, cannot be said to be in a mess.

Roberts said Nigeria should improve its regulatory institutions, including measures to counter corruption in the face of the current economic reality.

In a statement, Roberts said Nigeria has good policies in place and should take steps to build confidence in its capacity to regulate and renew efforts to identify and stamp out corrupt practices.

He said: “I lived and worked in Nigeria for many years as a British diplomat and one of the issues that most disturbed me was the sustenance of the fuel subsidy regime.

“Why would a country with a severe infrastructural deficit invest more money on a wasteful expenditure such as cheap petrol, instead of building schools, hospitals, dams and a national railway system? It is evident that it had to go.

“We joined the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in saying as much to the Nigerian government. And at long last, it is gone.

"And everything we said that would happen after it goes is happening. Nigeria’s GDP is growing at 3.46 per cent while Europe is on the edge of recession.

“Her stock market just crossed 100,000 basis points, overtaking Argentina’s as the world’s most profitable stock market. And capital importation is up by 66 per cent.

“But that is not the best story. The cherry on the cake is that fuel importation into Nigeria is down 50 per cent. This means that Nigeria’s much-depleted federation account will rapidly be resuscitated.

More funds will trickle down to the federating states from the Federal Government, and if well utilised, Nigeria could attain her pre-2015 growth levels.

“The future looks bright for Nigeria if her government can stay the course and resist the pressure to reverse the fuel subsidy removal and the flotation of the Naira.

“Nigeria’s economy is not a mess. There is nothing messy about 3.46 per cent growth. If attaining such growth was easy, then we would have that level of GDP development in Europe. But we don’t.”

"The only thing I would say is that Nigeria must improve its regulatory institutions, including measures to counter corruption.”

“If I were an investor and observed that the former head of the Nigerian Communications Commission is now the Chairman of the board of MTN, and sitting with him on that board was the former head of Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service and the former Minister of Communication Technology, along with a host of former top regulatory quango bosses, I would have concerns.

“If Nigeria can fix this, I do not see how the country will not benefit from a high influx of foreign capital.

“Money is attracted to domiciles with good policies and sound regulations.

“Right now, Nigeria has the policy. All it needs is to take steps to build confidence in its capacity to regulate and renew efforts to identify and stamp out corrupt practices.”

This is how good criticism should be done.

It is quite disturbing to see the dimension of opposition criticism has taken in Nigeria, resulting in hate speech, blatant lies, and outright misleading comments.

Peter Obi and his Obidients can do better than they are presently doing, with his recent attack on the government for the UN donation of wheat purchased from Ukraine to support Nigeria, one can see the dangerous role Obi is playing and being cheered by his thoughtless followers.

Such statement should be frowned upon and it would be necessary if DSS invited him and cautioned him to limit his instigation, after all, Anambra where he ruled doesn't produce wheat to service his state in a federation where agriculture is on the concurrent list.

The government should be ready to stamp out corruption from our institutions and strengthen its policies. The former British commissioner is one point on this

This man identified the main problem in his talk there.

His words:

More funds will trickle down to the federating states from the Federal Government, and if well utilised, Nigeria could attain her pre-2015 growth levels.

I have repeatedly said that the STATES are the main problem we have in this country.

They are a hotbed of corruption, which just goes SCOT-FREE as everybody attacks the FG in Abuja.

Nobody wants to attack leaders from their own ethnicity.

So everybody abuses FG.

Many don't even realise that the STATES have more money than the FG.

Their combIned income is more than the FG.

And even recently the FG doubled or tripled their monthly allocation, since subsidy removal!

Yet nobody asks their state governors, ''how far with all this money you're getting''?

Hehehe.

So says a white man that has never set his foot in Nigeria local market.

APC and her supporters can listen to anything that makes them happy and convince them that Nigeria economy is doing so great at the moment.

The news on the streets of Nigeria is different from what this guy want us to believe.

What we see in the street is hunger, lamentations, frustrations and desperation.

An ordinary Nigerian is not really interested in the English he is speaking, but after what he will eat.

Watch as people who told us," na statistics we go chop",will now believe in the statistics this man is presenting because it resonates with them now wink.

This is the kind of men Tinubu and Cardoso get economic ideas from.

A country that colonized almost every other country in the world and stole their resources with reckless abandon. Yet, your GDP is still $3 trillion....while your mates like Germany, China and USA have overtaken you.

Oga, Your own country is going through recession. Take your advice to your country; they need it more than we do. Nigeria's economy has never been this bad!

This thread will be very dry. Obidients don't want to hear anything positive about this country anymore. They only masturbate on bad news. And their Agulu lying machine is making sure they have enough of that

The economy is in good condition while the wellbeing of the people are in shambles.
If what is happening to the (Corruption, inflation,48 ministers instead of 37, unemployment, low standard of living, etc) economy of Nigeria happens in UK the minister of finance would resign.

We have GDP growth but not GDP per capita.
GDP per capita is calculated by dividing the GDP of a nation by its population.

The only thing the common man knows is wetin he go chop. grin Check out those previous useless posts in this thread.

This man got it right. Note...he said we must tackle corruption. He even gave a signal of why he won't invest in Nigeria. Read this article again. The common man is less concerned about this cos he is illiterate. All he wants is food. Lol. IBB, Abacha, OBJ, Yaradua, Jonathan and Buhari all gave you food, but they destroyed everything. Only top boys gain from it. Lol. That subsidy the common man wants to force when corruption is still there is what is killing us.

Bola Tinubu is a rogue, and he cannot also fix this problem. And please, don't tell me Obi or Atiku can because they are rogues too.

We must pay for the debts and all the stolen money. We must, and that is what we are doing now. However, they are still stealing it, so this suffering is for nothing.

See...Naija go cast one day. It is a prophecy that will come to pass. A loaf of bread will be over N100k sef. That time our eyes go clear that corruption, illiteracy and overpopulation are the monsters we have to defeat.

Did u read his analysis at all? Kindly read if you did not and with ur open mindedness this time around

And then, are you suggesting that we should go back to subsidy regime?

If you did not pick anything from his two emphasized words, regulation and corruption kick out, then, I wonder what you want as a Nigerian

Hypocrisy at its highest!! He may be looking for special favour from mr president hence reason for saying this. The way things are done in Nigeria is it the way they are done in his country?

Will the government in the country where he comes wake up one morning and remove subsidy when they failed to provide good roads, electricity, water, security, good take home salaries, good health care and others? In his country are corrupt officials not brutally dealt with? Can the same be said of Nigeria?

The GDP he quoted how authentic are they? Do we have a realistic reliable database system in Nigeria? So how did they come about those fake figures? That is corruption at work!!!!!

Until they fix all these issues Nigerians have the right to cheap petrol

Because whenever Nigerians buy things, they expect the price to conform to their income.

IN reality, anyone selling you anything does not ask about how much you are earning, instead they ask if YOU CAN PAY.
