The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), says it has spent about N20 million in destroying more than three million fake and sub-standard tyres nationwide. Na wa o! N20 million to destroy 3 million tyres. They added they still had about 2 million tyres in your dump site.

There are over 400 unemployed Nigerians who can destroy them for much less,

Why burn them when they could be recycled? What is the reason for them telling us this anyway?

Paid to pollute our air for nothing? Do you know how many companies would have gained from those tires being recycled? Think how many miles of pavement this could have gone to, instead of being burnt in the way I guess they were.

Re: SON Spent N20 Million Naira To Destroy About 3 Million Tyres! by gulfer: 5:04pm On Dec 23, 2011
They need to fly in technical partners to burn the tyres and the m(h)oney is for their flight and accomodation for the tyre burning period. O

The question that should be asked is, "how are they going to dispose the tires"?

There's no way that they would be burning such a large number of tires and without serious health effects on the people of the state. My guess is that they need the money to break down the tires into chunks that can be used for play fields and tracks. You can essentially use the chunks anywhere that you would use sawdust.

Better to have burnt tires than road accidents. Besides, those tires would most likely be used for road pavement.

3 million tyres,  shocked shocked shocked shocked shocked, acid rain looms.

Did they not think of recycling ? or even selling to foreign companies that may have a need for it. That would have cost a lot less and even earned them some income.

Air pollution isn't even recognized in Nigeria. It's such a common thing that no one pays any attention to it. How many millions of sub-standard smoke-churning vehicles are roaming Nigeria's roads in the name of vehicular transportation? How many millions of smoke-producing generator sets sit at the back of every home? How many millions of outdoor wood-burning kitchens are in Nigeria? I hope you see what I'm getting at. The pollution that the tires will produce isnot much compared
to the one already existing.

The text clearly says 'destroyed'. I can't see 'burning' anywhere so where is all the petrol, pollution talk coming from. Any I wonder why anything government does needs to have a price tag waved in our faces. We have a money complex in this country. Pity.

Re: SON Spent N20 Million Naira To Destroy About 3 Million Tyres! by wazobiang: 6:42pm On Dec 23, 2011
of course they had to put the additional 2million tyres to make sure they will be pardoned to embezzle the next (2/3 x 20 million). that's logical.

Well they are shown regularly on NTA shinning teeth as they torch the tyres, never heard any reports about recyling them for road pavements
pavements on nigeria roads surely thats an irony!! and if they were being recylced it shouldnt cost a thing apart from logistics
