Ahmadinejad Visiting U.S.A? by jerrymania(m): 9:44pm On Sep 23, 2007
TEHRAN, Iran - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Sunday that the American people are eager for different opinions about the world, and he is looking forward to providing them with "correct and clear information," state media reported.

The hardline Iranian leader left Sunday for New York to address the You.N. General Assembly and speak to students and teachers during a forum at Columbia University.

Tensions are high between Washington and Tehran over US. accusations that Iran is secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons and helping Shiite militias in Iraq that target US. troops — claims Iran denies
Ahmadinejad said his visit will give Americans a chance to hear a different voice, the official IRNA news agency reported.

"The United States is a big and important country with a population of 300 million. Due to certain issues, the American people in the past years have been denied correct and clear information about global developments and are eager to hear different opinions," Ahmadinejad was quoted by IRNA as saying.

State-run television also quoted Ahmadinejad before boarding his presidential plane Sunday as saying that the General Assembly was an "important podium" to express Iran's views on regional and global issues.

Speaking at Columbia University
He is scheduled to address the Assembly on Tuesday — his third time attending the New York meeting in three years. He is also set to speak at a Columbia University question-and-answer forum on Monday in New York.

His request to lay a wreath at ground zero, site of the World Trade Center 2001 terror attacks, was denied by city officials and condemned by politicians. After the Sept. 11 attacks, hundreds of young Iranians held a series of candlelight vigils in Tehran.

Police rejected Ahmadinejad's request, citing construction and security concerns. In an interview to air Sunday on "60 Minutes," Ahmadinejad indicated he would not press the issue but expressed disbelief that the visit would offend Americans.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini also appeared dismayed that the request was rejected.

"What kind of damage will the US. face" by Ahmadinejad visiting the site, Hosseini asked at his weekly press conference Sunday.

Columbia University President Lee Bollinger has resisted requests to cancel the event but promised to introduce the talk himself with a series of tough questions on topics including Ahmadinejad's views on the Holocaust, his call for the destruction of the state of Israel and his government's alleged support of terrorism.

Columbia canceled a planned visit by the Iranian president last year, citing security and logistical reasons. Ahmadinejad has called the Holocaust "a myth" and called for Israel to be "wiped off the map."

Hosseini said there "are efforts to cancel" the Columbia speech, but the Iranian government is continuing to pursue the program. He did not elaborate other than saying a lot of pressure was being placed on the program's sponsors

The guy is a lunatic
why did they give him a visa and deny paw paw one? lipsrsealed

asking to lay a wreath on ground zero is such an insult to any American especially victims and their families.
these people are clearly making a mockery of our freedom of speech.
let an American go to Iran and move any how let alone ask a reasonable question as a free citizen which he is,ahmedinajab and people like him will be jabbing him with some painful weapons.
These people mistake Americas human rights laws as stupidity that's why he can open his mouth anyhow.

he should stay in Iran, mutilate himself with knives as he waits for his 12th Imam Mahdi to land from jannat.
brainless people.

God forbids!, a terrorist sponsorer and holocaust denier to lay a wreath at that site, he is an evil man.

Well it's a free world and I believe in giving a person a second chance to redeem themselves.  Him going to ground zero might be a defining moment in his life.  He might be startled at the devastation and the pain that was caused by terrorist organization and make him have a  change of heart and outlook on life.  we all need one close call to revitalize us to reality.

Are they saying that he has no right to have feelings for people that were slaughtered under suspicious conditions?

denex please!!!!!!!!!!!!
he can buy a wreath, make himself a memorial in tehran and lay it there.
Americans have basically told him that.
we don't need his stinking wreaths
Re: Ahmadinejad Visiting U.S.A? by denex: 8:45pm On Sep 24, 2007
At least it's not only USA citizens that died there. Several people from different nations perished at the world trade centre. Perhaps they should leave it up to the dead to decide if there should be discrimination about who pays respect to them.

Anyway, this is not my business sha.
Re: Ahmadinejad Visiting U.S.A? by osisi5: 8:49pm On Sep 24, 2007
have you listened to the guy speak?
a raving lunatic.
he should not be laying wreaths on any graves
who tells you he has a heart.
a man with a human heart would not say the things he has said and he's said plenty.
Iranians in America ran away  to Ameriica when people like him took over
they are not his fans in life and will not be in death.

even Abacha may wake up and strike him if he showed up with a wreath near his grave

he can shove his  stupid wreaths down his own throat

This could be viewed in 2 different ways.

1. It is always smart to get closer to your enemy and study/ discover his state of mind by asking difficult questions that favor you.
Moreover, United States government or media can not be trusted, hence you can not blame the citizens for craving to find out the truth.

2. United States constitution (Freedom of everything) is also one of their greatest enemies. These people (Iraq, Iran, Afgh etc) continue to use this constitution to bring down United States gradually. In Short, these people are playing Bush and the rest like a game of chess; and they are ready to go deep/ far patiently.

I also think that this new development (Ahmadinejad Visiting Col University) indicates that United States power house status is reducing and they must do something to regain their magnificent status back before it's too late.

Do you think Bush has balls to accept an invitation to speak at a University in Iran?

I don't think so!

No they are not, Americans are only exercising their right to decide who gains access to their country. No matter how much you hate them, even you cannot deny them that right.

The way some people reason is shocking! So because Indians, Pakistanis, Ugandan,s Peruvians, Chinese e.t.c. citizens died at ground zero the US is now obliged to open her doors to every tom, dick and harry claiming to want to lay wreaths?

You want to lay wreaths for your dead? please lay them in your country!
Re: Ahmadinejad Visiting U.S.A? by Iman3(m): 12:44am On Sep 25, 2007
NEW YORK - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad questioned the official version of the Sept. 11 attacks and defended the right to cast doubt on the Holocaust in a tense appearance at Columbia University, whose president accused the hard-line leader of behaving like "a petty and cruel dictator."

Ahmadinejad smiled at first but appeared increasingly agitated, decrying the "insults" and "unfriendly treatment." Columbia President Lee Bollinger and audience members took him to task over Iran's human-rights record and foreign policy, as well as Ahmadinejad's statements denying the Holocaust and calling for the disappearance of Israel.

"Mr. President, you exhibit all the signs of a petty and cruel dictator," Bollinger said, to loud applause.

He said Ahmadinejad's denial of the Holocaust might fool the illiterate and ignorant.

"When you come to a place like this it makes you simply ridiculous," Bollinger said. "The truth is that the Holocaust is the most documented event in human history."

Ahmadinejad rose, also to applause, and after a religious invocation, said Bollinger's opening was "an insult to information and the knowledge of the audience here."

"There were insults and claims that were incorrect, regretfully," Ahmadinejad said, accusing Bollinger of falling under the influence of the hostile U.S. press and politicians. "I should not begin by being affected by this unfriendly treatment."

During a question and answer session, Ahmadinejad appeared tense and unsmiling, in contrast to more relaxed interviews and appearances earlier in the day.

In response to one audience, Ahmadinejad denied he was questioning the existence of the Holocaust: "Granted this happened, what does it have to do with the Palestinian people?"

But then he said he was defending the rights of European scholars, an apparent reference to a small number who have been prosecuted under national laws for denying or minimizing the Holocaust.

"There's nothing known as absolute," he said.

He reiterated his desire to visit ground zero to express sympathy with the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, but then appeared to question whether al-Qaida was responsible.

"Why did this happen? What caused it? What conditions led to it?" he said. "Who truly was involved? Who was really involved and put it all together?"

Asked about executions of homosexuals in Iran, Ahmadinejad said the judiciary system executed violent criminals and high-level drug dealers, comparing them to microbes eliminated through medical treatment. Pressed specifically about punishment of homosexuals, he said: "In Iran we don't have homosexuals like in your country."

With the audience laughing derisively, he continued: "In Iran we do not have this phenomenon. I don't know who's told you that we have this."

Bollinger was strongly criticized for inviting Ahmadinejad to Columbia, and had promised tough questions in his introduction to Ahmadinejad's talk. But the strident and personal nature of his attack on the president of Iran was startling.

"You are either brazenly provocative or astonishingly uneducated," Bollinger told Ahmadinejad about the leader's Holocaust denial.

During his prepared remarks, the Iranian president did not address Bollinger's accusations directly.

Kudos to Bollinger! Perhaps the world's presidential terrorist-in-chief wont be so willing to invite himself to US colleges in future.

How long before the conspiracy theorists tell us Bollinger was either Bush in disguise or reading a prepared script from the white house?

you're missing the point here. It wasnt a question of whether or not he could enter the US. It was his request to visit the site of 9/11 attacks that was denied (by city officials, i think).

I doubt the guy is going to be at the White house for the usual reception for foreign heads of government, given the frosty relationship between paranoid George Bush and the Iranian govt. Ahmadinejad's main business was at the United Nations.

And what was your point here? But for the fact that he is a serving head of state and thus guaranteed a diplomatic right to attend the UN summit being hosted in the US he would certainly have been denied entry into the US. Rather my point (which you desperately dont want to see) is simple, Ahmedinajad has the right to attend the UN general assembly holding in NY, anything beyond that is dependent on the perogative of the US government to accept or deny him access to other parts of their country not under the jurisdiction of the UN.

In simple logic, when you transit through a country with a transit visa, it is not so much the right to land in that country's airport that is the issue but whether you have the right to decide to pack your bags and head for the next town!

ziddy:

Why should he? So he can use it as another photo-op to boost his battered image? Is Bush paranoid to use force against those who would stop at nothing to bomb the innocent?

Bollinger was quite childish, for an academic/administrator of his ilk. Take it or leave it, Ahmadinejad is still the head of a sovereign state, did they accept his request to lecture just so the could hold him up to public ridicule? or to hear him defend his worldview?

hogwash! When top US officials initially pressed to have the invite cancelled, hypocrites like you cried freedom of speech!!! Can we please allow Bollinger the freedom to express his innermost feelings without refering to him as childish?

And so what if Ahmedinejad is a head of state? Is Bollinger bound to respect him as such? You claim Ahmedinejad only came to "defend his worldview" that includes dismissing the existence of the holocaust and calling for the destruction of the Isreali nation and yet accuse Bollinger of childishness for daring to "defend his own worldview"?

How ridiculous!

From the transcripts of the interactive session, he didn't actually deny the existence(sic) of the holocaust. And yes, the legality of the Israeli nation is indeed questionable.

this is laughably ridiculous!

- that ahmedinajad categorically denies the validity of the holocause is news only to people like you.

- The legality of the Jewish nation is questionable only to ignorant people. The names Bethlehem, Judea, Jerusalem, Samaria, Hebron, Nazareth, Capernaum are neither European, Arab or Persian. Perhaps those cities jumped down from the moon. It might interest you to note that unlike Isreal, the nation of Jordan (which takes its name from a historically Jewish river Jordan) did not exist before 1922! Of course the legality of the Jordanian nation is never questionable to folks like you and Ahmedinejad!

are you his official biographer? people like you need to be careful, when you get so passionate about certain issues it becomes impossible to either reason properly or accommodate the views of other people/ their rights to self expression, that is the beginning of religious extremism. Nobody was born with Islamist/Christian fundamentalism preinstalled in their soul. It kind of grows on you when you refuse to think for yourself and question the things you are told.

you're welcome to your delusions.
