A Nigerian scholar in Canada, Dr Tope Oriola has won this year’s Canadian Governor- General’s Gold Medal Award, for his outstanding performance as a doctoral student in University of Alberta, Canada. He did so well that, even the president

and vice chancellor of the school said of Tope’s research that it “continues to have significant impact on the global community.”

ANigerian, Tope Oriola has won this year’s Canadian government’s Governor-General’s Gold Medal Award in far away Edmonton, Alberta, Canada for his outstanding performance as a doctoral student in a Canadian university.

In Canadian standard, the Governor-General’s Medal “recognises a doctoral student who achieved the highest academic standing and cumulative scholarly achievement.

“This includes academic performance, quality of dissertation and overall scholarly record,” said an official notification by the University of Alberta.

Speaking at the occasion, the President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Alberta, Dr Indira Samarasekira, stated that “in addition to an outstanding publication record, Tope achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA (Grade Point Average) in his doctoral studies and his research continues to have significant impact on the global community.”

Oriola is a recipient of several academic awards, including the F.S. Chia Ph.D Scholarship, the Field Law Leilani Muir Graduate Research Scholarship for human rights studies, and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Doctoral Research grant, among others.

He is also an Izaak Killam Scholar, 2009-2011. The Izaak Killam Scholarship is the most prestigious graduate award adjudicated by the University of Alberta. Only four universities are Killam universities in Canada.

Many Nigerians, who were present at the event expressed how proud they were of Oriola's award.

They stated that the award represented the strength of the Nigerian spirit and a testament to the importance of perseverance and hardwork.

Oriola described the award as “extremely humbling” and thanked his parents, siblings, teachers, mentors and friends in Nigeria and Canada for their support over the years.

He also expressed his gratitude to the University of Alberta community for the enabling environment and intellectually stimulating facilities and resources.

A graduate of the University of Ado Ekiti, Tope’s doctoral thesis is entitled: “Criminal Resistance? The Politics of Kidnapping of Oil Workers in Nigeria.”

An internationally acclaimed criminologist and expert on surveillance, Professor Kevin Haggerty, supervised Dr Oriola.

A community-engaged scholar, Oriola is the president of the Nigerian Advancement Institute (NAI), an alternative policy think-tank.

He is working on two book projects. One of them, “'Non-lethal Force Options in Canada: Taser adoption by the police and its consequences,” is a collaborative exercise with Dr Charles Adeyanju of the University of Prince Edward Island and Dr Nicole Neverson at Ryerson University.

The study examines the use of various policing tools in Canada and is contracted to the highly revered University of British Columbia (UBC) Press.

The second book project is based on his doctoral dissertation. The Governor General’s Gold Medal Award was established in 1873 by Lord Dufferin, Canada’s third Governor-General.
