By Chykez Obiefule, Aba States in the South East zone of the country have been indifferent to the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government and mass protests that trailed it. However, Lawyers in Aba, the commercial center of Abia State under the aegis of Nigeria Bar Association, Aba Branch, Wednesday, joined their counterparts across the federation in the ongoing mass protests over fuel subsidy removal. The protest was peaceful and the residents of Aba applauded the actions of Aba Lawyers. |

Abagworo has come again with one of his suspect posts. Well, maybe it is vanguard. Nigeria Bar Association, Aba Branch is NOT = ABIA STATE. Soon, Nnewi Local Hunters Association would be equal to Anambra state. |

Anybody who has followed my argument on this issue will agree that my position is the fact. I have said Igbos are not indifferent to this fuel subsidy removal, people do not like it. However protests like these are usually honoured by Teachers, civil servants, TUC/NLC members in the East, or in this case NBA members in the East. These people honouring these protest are Igbos. There was no special meeting or referendum where it was decided that Igbos will either join the protest or not. There was nothing like that. It was up to individuals to choose to protest or not. However historically traders or Businessmen never like to join in NLC or Trade union protest. They just get on with their lives no matter what Government is in power. This behaviour is not perculiar to Igbos in Nigeria. Even in USA, Republican Businessmen or any Businessman for that matter who is usually capitalists and pro-business will not usually go to strike with the trade unions! So I don't really know why people are getting foolish over this. I have maintained that if you call this strike 20times traders/Businessmen will not go on strike and should not if they dont feel like. They dont usually go on strike so whats different this time? They have the right to open their shops 24hrs a day during this strike period if they so please. It is called democracy. |
