This is for those who always like to hinge the development of a country to access to sea. While access to sea is okay, it does not automatically translate to improved economy or well being of citizens. Here is an inexhaustive list of third world and developed landlocked countries doing better than Nigeria. In addition to better economy, these countries have peace, stable government, better physical infrastructure, and overall better HDIs than Nigeria. Only the countries in bold are developed (so to speak).

Botswana (Africa)
Bolivia
Paraguay
Switzerland
Austria
Czech Republic
Ukraine
Belarius
Luxembourg
Leichenstein
Swaziland (Africa)
Lesotho (Africa)
Bhutan
Uzbekistan
Mongolia
And many more

Nepal is almost similar to Nigeria in terms of GDP per capita. I am sure you will find Nigerians there who left their country due to hardship, but how many Nepalese would you find in Nigeria?

Countries with sea access doing poorly

Nigeria
Congo
Somali
Sierral Leone
Afghanistan
etc etc (to numerous to count)

All landlocked countries have played smart diplomacy to keep them going in terms of trade and shipments and cargo transportation.
With respect to Nigeria, if we separate, the entire North will be landlocked. But I see no reason why they cannot employ diplomacy to bring in their cargoes via the eastern or western flank of southern Nigeria. We will not be enemies after separation. Also, keep in mind that everyone wants money and peaceful neighbours they can do business with. As for the Igbos, they can only be considered landlocked if Igbos in the SS do not elect to be in the same country with the IGBOs in the SE. But that is highly unlikely because they also do not want to be slaves under other neighbouring non-Igbo groups. If anything (that is, if SE Has to stand alone as an Igbo country), the space between Abia and Rivers is less than 1 KM in many places. So also Rivers and Anambra and Delta. As such a lot of unregulated passage of goods and persons will be taking place, almost negating the effect of no access to sea. The SS needs SE (Igbo large market= population). The first thing an Igbo country should do is to develop a sound rail system for goods and to dredge Imo River which empties into Opobo (an Igbo coastal community in Rivers State)

Those Yoruba who readily adduce that Igbo land is landlocked are moronic dunces. They shall never know the second best economy in Africa stays with a landlocked country.
