@GBAWE

Please stop being medramatic you probably one of those peoplener see anything good about people you don't like.

Say what you want. It is your prerogative. I just wonder why the evolution process is so cruel to Nigerians to the extent we need much more time to gain the mental sophistication that will enable us see what is glaringly obvious so we can contribute positively towards the effort  to move our Nation forward .

When  "establishment" men like IBB et al , of all those available, settled for OBJ as President in 1999 it should have been clear that the agenda is to keep power limited to those who will always lead in favour of preserving the central system that benefits a few Nigerians. Sure OBJ did some good but he was also hideously corrupt, deceptive and , overall, pro-elitist and passionately in favour of preserving the same system that enslaves the vast majority so that a few 'oligarchs' continue to live fat. I can never respect a leader like that.

Virtually everything OBJ did , even if enveloped in obvious goodness, was designed to cynically benefit him and the system of elitism he agreed to defend via his pact with IBB et al. Whenever OBJ has had the chance to kingmake, and thus influence the destiny of Nigeria positively, he has outrightly favoured criminals, mediocrities and looters from as far back as when he presided over the fraud that introduced a dull school teacher (Shagari) as President instead of a man (Awolowo) we all know, despite his shortcomings, would have been a great President.

Folks should study OBJ's history dispassionately. It will be obvious he is egotistical , vengeful and totally devoted to cosmetic leadership rather than the genuinely transformational leadership the likes of Awolowo, Biko, Mandela, Azikiwe, Nkrumah, Lumumba, to mention a few, believed in passionately.

We have been unlucky with leadership but that should not lead us to celebrate a despot as a hero when, in reality, he enriched himself hideously, partisanly targeted political opponent and callously conceded valuable State assets to his cronies for pittance amongst many other unpatriotic deeds.

As Nigeria spirals into instability, historian and economic researcher Frederick William Engdahl argues a recent government decision to lift subsidies on imported fuel in the oil-rich nation bears the mark of Washington Consensus shock therapy. In the article below, Engdahl explains his view. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation and its largest oil producer, is from all evidence being systematically thrown into chaos and a state of civil war. The recent surprise decision by the government of Goodluck Jonathan to abruptly lift subsidies on imported gasoline and other fuel has a far more sinister background than mere corruption, and the Washington-based International Monetary Fund (IMF) is playing a key role. China appears to be the likely loser along with Nigeria’s population. The recent strikes protesting the government’s abrupt elimination of gasoline and other fuel subsidies, that brought Nigeria briefly to a standstill, came as a surprise to most in the country. Months earlier, President Jonathan had promised the major trade union organizations that he would conduct a gradual four-stage lifting of the subsidy to ease the economic burden. Instead, without warning he announced an immediate full removal of subsidies effective January 1, 2012. It was “shock therapy” to put it mildly. Nigeria today is one of the world’s most important producers of light, sweet crude oil-the same high- quality crude oil that Libya and the British North Sea produce. The country is showing every indication of spiraling downward into deep disorder. Nigeria is the fifth largest supplier of oil to the United States and twelfth largest oil producer in the world on a par with Kuwait and just behind Venezuela with production exceeding two million barrels a day. The curious timing of IMF subsidy demand Despite its oil riches, Nigeria remains one of Africa’s poorest countries. The known oilfields are concentrated around the vast Niger Delta roughly between Port Harcourt and extending in the direction of Lagos, with large new finds being developed all along the oil-rich Gulf of Guinea. Nigeria’s oil is exploited and largely exported by the Anglo-American giants- Shell, Mobil, Chevron, Texaco. Italy’s Agip also has a presence and most recently, to no one’s surprise, the Chinese state oil companies began seeking major exploration and oil infrastructure agreements with the Abuja government. Ironically, despite the fact that Nigeria has abundant oil to earn dollar export revenue to build its domestic infrastructure, government policy has deliberately let its domestic oil refining capacity fall into ruin. The consequence has been that most of the gasoline and other refined petroleum products used to drive transportation and industry, has to be imported, despite the country’s abundant oil. In order to shield the population from the high import costs of gasoline and other refined fuels, the central government has subsidized prices. Until January 1, 2012, that is. That was the day when, without advance warning President Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan announced immediate removal of all fuel subsidies. Prices for gasoline shot up almost threefold in hours from 65 naira (35 cents of a dollar) a liter to 150 naira (93 cents). The impact rippled across the economy to everything including prices of grains and vegetables. In justifying the move, Central Bank Governor Lamido Sanusi insisted that “The monies will be used in provision of social amenities and infrastructural development that will benefit Nigerians more and save the country from economic rift. ” President Goodluck Jonathan says he is phasing out the subsidy as a part of a move to “clean up the Nigerian government.” If so, how he plans to proceed is anything but apparent. The huge unexpected price hike for domestic fuel triggered nationwide protests that threatened to bring the economy to a halt by mid-January. The president deftly took the wind out of protester sails by announcing a partial rollback in prices, still leaving prices effectively double that of December. The trade union federation immediately called off the protests. Then, revealingly, Goodluck Jonathan’s government ordered the military to take to the streets to “keep order” and de facto prevent new protests. All that took place during one of the bloodiest waves of bombings and murder rampages by the terrorist Boko Haram sect creating a climate of extreme chaos. The smoking gun of the IMF What has been buried from international accounts of the unrest is the explicit role the US-dominated International Monetary Fund (IMF) played in the situation. With suspicious timing IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde was in Nigeria days before the abrupt subsidy decision of President Jonathan. By all accounts, the IMF and the Nigerian government have been careful this time not to be blatant about openly announcing demands to ends subsidies as they were in Tunisia before food protests became the trigger for that country’s Twitter putsch in 2011. During her visit to Nigeria Lagarde said President Jonathan’s ‘Transformation Agenda’ for deregulation “is an agenda for Nigeria, driven by Nigerians. The IMF is here to support you and be a better partner for you.” Few Nigerians were convinced.

wether people like it or not this man obj is a blessing to all the southerners be it in the name south south, south east or south west. This man singlehandedly broke the mafianic displays we were used to witnessing from the northern mafia.he has been able to pocket the likes of IBB,ATIKU,RIMI of blessed memory and so many others that no southerner would have been able to do.Where would this man Jonathan have come from to become the president if not for obj and mark my words the equity we've been clamouring for would have been easily achieved if not for this jonathan man that has not been building on the foundation that was left by obj in tackling the early mafia that has now metamorphosed into what is known as cabal and the cabal inturn giving birth to some satanic children in the name of boko haram etc.People should not get me wrong, obj is not a saint,he has his shortcomings too but for this country to attain the rightful height where we should be,we need a fearless,no nonsense and a reverred person by the political and the armed forces as a whole to steer this country to our ELDORADO.

This is what OBJ want so that people will be saying he is the best. He deliberately brought Yar Adua knowing fully well his health condition. He also brought Jonathan knowing well that he is a dull man. He like portraying himself as indispensable, that is why he did not allow a free and fair election that would throw up people of superior thinking into Aso Rock. Bet it, if GEJ does not go in 2015, OBJ will want to force Sambo on us who is more duller than GEJ so that you people will continue praising him as the best so far. OBJ like EGO sha.

^^^^^^^^^
EXACTLY! these are a few things Obj did as president, many more things are there that time would not permit us discussing. I'm not going to be naive or be a "small mind that's easily satisfied with crap" so I would attest to the fact that Obj had his weaknesses & short-comings just like every single person on earth has but all-in-all,Obj knows what it entails to be a leader & believe it or not,Obj is one of the greatest leaders we've had in Nigeria. Here are a few of my reasons for why I think Obj's real leadership material:
1. No leader can do all the work of fixing a country alone so he has to get the right people to work with him. Till date, Obj's cabinet is the most effective & effecient. They were mainly picked on merit & not "padi padi." Even some people from opposition parties were appointed by him into his cabinet as long as they were considered efficient enough to effectively do the jobs they were appointed for. Many of his ministers & cabinet members including Obi-Ezekwezili,El-Rufai(when he was act minister, abuja was really organized & lawful), Nuhu Ribadu (when he was efcc chairman,it didn't matter who ur father was,if u were suspected of corruption,u'd be tried & if found innocent would be released),Dora Akunyili (when she was nafdac chairman, counterfeit drugs & health fraud were really on the low), TY Danjuma (obj's defense minister) etc were really really efficient, I can go on to mention more but let's chill here.
2. A leader should command respect & Authority--Obj had this feature & was able to let everyone working under him know that as long as he was the president, they had to respect him & most importantly do their jobs well. His decisions were final, don't go around looking for how many people you'd get to do eye-service for him. He was 100% in charge of his military (unlike how Jonathan is today, his military is at one side,he [jonathan] is at another side).
3. A leader should put the unity of his country at the fore-front of affairs rather than being sentimental on the basis of religion, tribe, location etc, Obj was/is a NIGERIAN(he never segmented anything by tribe, religion or all that crap. IT IS SAFE TO SAY OBJ IS ONE OF THOSE "DE-TRIBALISED" LEADERS WE HAVE IN THIS COUNTRY"wink.
4. A leader should be able to think & make smart decisions quickly, this is another feature Obj had/has.
5. A leader should not let too many advices from sooooo many people cloud his own final judgement, Obj had this feature.
6. A leader should be able to think ahead into the future how his decisions affect things in the future, Obj had this feature. (he wanted to remove subsidies on fuel but he thought it through how inflation would rise & how people would suffer more if he had done that & he dropped it at least temporarily. Jonathan came, removed subsidies in the name of planning for a better future for Nigeria yet he didn't think of the consequences of that action on the value of our money[talk about robbing peter to pay paul] , N5 is gradually disappearing from circulation cos you can't buy anything with it any longer. Very soon maybe we would be carrying N1million notes.[God forbid],
7. A leader must be able to guarantee national security to a very reasonable extent, Obj knew this aspect well(of course there were a few security threats during his rule as president, but he always knew how to counter them)

LIKE I SAID BEFORE,Obj ISN'T A 100%, RATHER WAS/IS HE A PERFECT MAN YES HE HAD HIS FLAWS,MISTAKES & SHORT-COMINGS,BUT THE TRUTH IS THAT HE HAD/HAS THE "REAL QUALITIES OF A LEADER." I'm not exactly saying we want Obj back in power, but we want "people of such efficient leadership characteristics in Nigeria."
Re: Who Doesn’t Wish Obasanjo Back As President? by omoalaro: 8:12pm On Feb 07, 2012
OBJ appear to be wining.
He set out to punish nigerians for refusing him a third term by foisting on us a combination of a sick Yar'Adua and an incompetent GEJ.
His thinking was that one day, Nigerians would look back and regret not granting him a third term. This is exactly what is happening now.
How would any lover of Nigeria recruit the worst among them and still claim to love Nigeria.
If OBJ at that time would employ a managing director and a deputy managing director for his Otta Farm, would he in all sincerity have employed a confirmed sick man and an obviously incompetent deputy? NO.
We all know the steps in a recruitment process include ability test and finally a medical test, he deliberatly refused to follow this simple protocol. The result is that Nigeria is way back than OBJ left it.
We all know in a list of 100 competent south southerners, GEJ would never have appeared with the likes of Donald Duke, Ajumogobia, Pat Utomi, Ben Bruce etc. but OBJ preferred a GEJ that would consider himself too lucky to say no to anything from him.
People are now thinking that giving him a third term would have been better. OBJ has won, Nigeria has lost.

Zap no! If Obasanjo had halted sharia when it started, this boko nonsense wouldn't be here today. . . after forcing their Sharia into Nigeria, the guys became confident that they could get rid of 'westernization' all together, by any means necessary. But no, Obj was too busy lining his pockets and straffing his daughter-in-law!!!!!!

I am a new member here and I can not help but feel sad for this country. The problem in this country is the populace; the people of Nigeria are bad people, ignorant, ungovernable, indisciplined, superstitious, with a very injurious traditional value system. You're very prepared to be blind to facts and lack the moral courage to change when you find a more superior argument. You'll rather argue on.

I've been trying to get support to start a movement to educate children and focus on their education up till secondary school but I've got no support. That is where hope lies in this country in 30yrs' time. The old people will have to live out their pathetic life and go.

I was brought up ti idolize Awolowo and hate Obasanjo. I have now educated myself enough to put things in perspective.

Go learn some moral courage and lose all your friends.

Why ? well because enough is enough. Nigeria has more than 100 million people, why always this former coup leader who loves conniving with foreign powers? Obasanjo can write his memoires and sell the books or be a sort of information source in a political science department in many african universities.
