Crashed Helicopter That Killed DIG Haruna John Was Faulty by mukina2: 12:48pm On Mar 15, 2012
A Nigerian Newspaper on Thursday reported that the helicopter that killed a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Haruna John and three other senior police officers in Jos on Wednesday was a faulty one.
The paper quoted witness accounts as saying the chopper took off from the Jos Prison field with indications that something was wrong with it as it headed to Abuja. While flying away, the helicopter drastically lost altitude, and then smoke oozed out of it before it burst into flames and crashed in Kabong, a residential area at Gada Biyu, Jos North.
Resident Iliya John said “We usually see helicopters going round the city almost every day, but this morning we saw this one flying in an abnormal way and we all became alert and we started heading for safety…it was going so low that whoever sees it could tell that something was amiss, in fact people first started coming out and pointing at the way it was flying so low, it was not as the normal ones that we see every day.”
“People were even following the aircraft to see where it was going to land because they noticed that it had mechanical problem.” another witness, Joseph Audu added.
Senator Hadi Sirika, who served as pilot in the Nigeria Police Force, told journalist that “There are several possible causes, if there is no brief you can’t really fathom what happened but he insisted that the crashed chopper was new.

A helicopter may have developed a technical malfunction in flight...that should not be construed as being 'faulty' (which implies a known fault). It should not also be construed as being an inherently 'nigerian' thing.

American F-22s have developed malfunctions in air. Space Shuttle challenger exploded seconds after take off. A state of the art Air France plane went down off the coast of Brazil after the plane stalled. The reason was a faulty air-speed indicator.

Let's step away from this knee-jerk criticism until we have FACTS to back them up.

I totally agree - but lets bring it home to the Nigerian context. An eye witness claimed a fault had developed before the take of the bird. Generally Nigerians have a lack lustre attitude when it comes to maintanance hence the reason i am not surprised.

The bolded is a careless embellishment of the story.

There is no place in the article where that is stated, rather eyewitnesses realised there was a problem soon after it took off, because it was flying so low and at a point, had smoke pouring out of the engine.

" The way the aircraft took off after the state Police Commissioner Emmanuel Ayeni bid farewell to the DIG clearly showed it had some technical problem,” an official who was at the take-off place said, but declined to be named because he was not authorised to speak. "

In simple words, it was already in flight before problems were noticed. No?
"Take off" means to lift off the ground and fly.

At that point chance of successfuly aborting the flight is slim, like someone said a spacecraft burst into flames. When cannot rely tell unless a sincere inveatigation has revealed the facts.
It is no time for conjectures.

Given the average Nigerian's penchant to cut corners in order to enrich himself at the expense of others, are we sure that the crashed copter was actually a brand new one delivered in December 2011? Could it not have been some obsolete, refurbished copter presented and delivered as brand new?

Nigerians urged to pray to avert plane crash
Written by Shola Adekola, Lagos
Wednesday, 01 February 2012

The pastor in charge of Synagog[/b]ue Church of All Nations, Prophet T.B Joshua, has called on Nigerians to pray fervently to God to avert a looming air disaster in the country.

The man of God made the appeal while revealing a prophecy God showed him concerning the aviation sector during a Sunday service.

The pastor, while making the prophecy, was said to have explained that the purported crash would have nothing to do with either pilot error or aircraft problem but that of security problem.

According to Joshua, the purported crash, if not averted, would involve one of the country’s local flights.

Prophet Joshua urged Nigerians to pray that the country did not experience such a disaster, which he said, might claim lives of many government officials.

He, however, advised anybody who wanted to travel by air to recite Psalm 91 before boarding any aircraft for safe landing.

Can we spare Nigerians all this cock and bull story of faults and faultiness. The Nigerian Police, with or without the force, should look inside and tell us the truth. The Police HQ suicide-bombing didn't just happen. Someone "who knows" leaked out the IG's itinerary for the day. A high profile suspect escapes from under the nose of very competent grin and professional winkpolice officers. This chopper was carrying a DIG, his aide, a pilot and an engineer. They were all foolhardy to have not cared about a "faulty" machine and got airborne . Does SABOTAGE exist in the Nigerian dictionary? Let's not becloud the real issue with our faulty smokescreen just because the maintenance culture of some Nigerians are faulty.

I won't be surprised if other DIGs/AIGs/CPs refuse ro board police surveillance choppers again. Maybe they'll rely on other ranks to board, undertake surveillance and seat in their office waiting for graphic reports
Re: Crashed Helicopter That Killed DIG Haruna John Was Faulty by Jakumo(m): 4:43am On Mar 16, 2012
The Nigerian government should seriously consider the acquisition of un-manned aerial drones. A few dozen drones equipped with high-resolution surveillance video cameras can be bought for the same price as a single full-sized police helicopter, and those drones can be monitored by specialists sitting in command vehicles on the ground, safely removed from the scene of the action being observed.

There is NO information-gathering mission currently conducted by manned helicopters that cannot be carried out by remote-controlled drones, FAR more efficiently, and at a significantly cheaper cost per hour than a full-sized, conventional chopper or fixed-wing aircraft.

Re: Crashed Helicopter That Killed DIG Haruna John Was Faulty by martyns303(m): 10:31am On Mar 16, 2012
if the aircraft is new as claimed, and also according obervers from the report tha there was a black smoke then it went up in flames, possible cause is pre-ignition which lead to detonation, the pilot was flying on too lean mixture, creating a hot spot in the cylinder, the cylinder with the hot spot will ignite the mixture befor the programmed time of ignition, the result is pistons wont be at sequences, the solution was to richen the misture. Also if the pilot had over primed the mixture it would lead to pooling and black smoke is an indication of over primed mixture. Another possibility is that the pilot was flying on AVGAS of low octane and i bet you with my money this was likely the cause. if it were an engine failure, the pilot would have executed engine failure procedure and safely landed the aircraft.
Re: Crashed Helicopter That Killed DIG Haruna John Was Faulty by Jakumo(m): 11:06am On Mar 16, 2012
Hopefully the dead pilot will have learned his lesson never to fly with too lean a mixture, or to use low-octane fuel originally intended for golf-carts, ASSUMING, of course, that the helo was not jet-turbine powered, in which case none of the above apply.

Anyways, unable to resist any chance to serve as arm-chair aircraft accident investigator, I will counter Martyn's ASSUMPTION that helicopter engine-out auto-rotation landings can be performed regardless of altitude, by reaching for my well-worn bullchit whistle for a quick blast, before adding that if engine failure occurs WITHIN the " Dead Man's Curve", that helicopter pilot and passengers will only be left with enough time to bend over and kiss their quivering aszes goodbye, before they hit the deck hard.
