Obi to build new govt house, assembly and judiciary complexes

From Geoffrey Anyanwu, Awka
Friday, March 23, 2012

Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi yesterday restated his administration’s determination to start and complete a three-arm-zone before the end of his tenure.
Speaking at the First Annual State Chief Judges Dinner held at King David’s Hotel, Awka, Obi stated that the ultra-modern government house and lodge, state house of assembly complex and new judiciary headquarters would provide a better working environment and facilities in tune with the demands of the day.
Already, land for the project has been acquired at Agu-Awka area of the state capital.

The governor, who reiterated his warning over the danger of borrowing to finance consumption, called for a functional fiscal federalism to help the country plan properly and encourage the federating units to live within their resources.
Assuring that his government would never borrow, no matter the circumstances, Obi lamented that the present high domestic debt burden in the country was strangling businesses and reducing employment opportunities.

The host, Justice Peter Umeadi thanked the governor for carrying the judiciary along and urged the people to appreciate the valuable achievements of the governor in entrenching good governance.
Umeadi stated that the dinner was another forum for legal practitioners to interact and exchange ideas and assured that the judiciary under him would live up to expectation.

Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Princess Chinwe Nwaebili, who was represented by the Chairman, House of Assembly Committee on Judiciary and Member representing Onitsha North One, Mr. Chigbo Enweuzor assured that the legislature would continue to work for the collective interest of the state, and thanked the judiciary for its support and encouragement.

She extolled Governor Obi for the new Judiciary complex project and recalled that his administration brought a new dawn in the legal system and promotion of the rule of law while his support and encouragement had enhanced quick dispensation of justice.
Delivering a keynote address, a retired Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Dympna Ezeani commended Governor Obi for all he haddone for the judiciary including being the first to provide cars to magistrates in 2006 and for the existing understanding with the state Chief Judge.
Mrs. Ezeani explained that more empowerment of Magistrates would further strengthen and enhance the judicial system in the State.
