In many other countries, such as Vietnam and South Korea, mines are still killing innocent residents decades after their wars ended. Thankfully, the Federal troops were humane enough not to plant mines all over the SE which could have been killing and maiming us today.

A bomb said to have been abandoned during the Nigerian civil war over 40 years ago exploded at Oye market in Awgu local government area of Enugu state but there was no casualty, the police said.

The explosion reportedly occurred at about 14.50 pm at rice mill section of the market on Friday.

The source of the bomb could not be immediately ascertained, but bomb experts said it could be one of the unexploded bombs dropped during the war. The experts could not say whether it was left by the Nigerian or Biafran army.

Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Ebere Amaraizu who confirmed the blast said the command had commenced investigations into the incident.

He said, “We have commenced full-scale investigations into the blast suspected to be that of the unexploded ordinance that was used and abandoned during the civil war.”

Amaraizu added, “The incident allegedly occurred at about 1450hrs of 30/03/12 at rice mill part of Oye market of Awgu in Enugu State of Nigeria. No casualty was reported as there was no loss of life or property.”

Men of the Anti-Bomb Squad of the command have already picked the remnants of the suspected bomb for necessary analysis, the PPRO said.

Amaraizu recalled the sensitization campaign earlier carried out by the command in conjunction with the media over the devastating effect of the unexploded ordinances and advised the people not to tamper with them any time they come across such on their farms or any other area affected by the civil war.

The command, however, assured the people of the state of “maximum safety”.
