Unidentified gunmen in two Hummer Jeeps have shot and killed four policemen in Oraifite community in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, Southeast Nigeria.

The four policemen were on routine patrol in the area on Monday night when the incident happened.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt that an inspector and eight other policemen had gone on routine duty at Emeka Offor Junction in the area at night when the gunmen opened fire on them.

An eye witness account said that some unidentified bandits operating in two Hummer Jeeps opened fire and killed four the policemen.


The witness said that the bandits later set fire on the two police patrol vehicles before taking the guns belonging to the dead and others, who ran away.

Confirming the incident, Mr Emeka Chukwuemeka, the Anambra Police Command spokesman, said three policemen were killed by the robbers.

He said that men of the command had swung into action to track down the fleeing hoodlums, adding that “we are making progress in catching up with the robbers.

“It is possible that the robbers sustained injuries because there was a serious gun battle between our men and the robbers but because nobody was seen from their side, people concluded that the police did not challenge the robbers,” Chukwuemeka said.

the politicians are not their problem. Their problem is their high rank officers, any money they lay their hands on ends up in a different destination, probably in their pockets. Check out how much that was budgeted for security in naija. Still they can't afford so many things including a gun. They get help from fed. Gov, they also get help from state govts and concern citizens and still they can't boost of good guns and bullet proof jackets which are the basics.

From the post they don't look armed robbers, they just openned fire on the police and even came down to set their vehicles on fire before taking away their rifles, nothing was reported stolen, there is something else about it.

Anambra State Police Command yesterday suffered another loss when a gang of gunmen sacked the Amichi Police Station in Nnewi South Local Government Area and made away with 14 AK47 rifles. The incident which took place at about 2.30a.m saw the gunmen, said to be seven in number, freeing the detainees and riddling the walls of the station with bullets, just as they left one policeman seriously injured.


Earlier, at about 7pm on Tuesday, another gang of gunmen stormed the ever-busy Arroma Junction, Awka in a bid to kidnap a man whose identity was yet to be known but who was lucky to escape with a bullet wound. According to an eyewitness, the gunmen who attacked the Amichi Police Station came in a black Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and met no resistance throughout the operation, which lasted for about 40mins.


Eyewitness said: “When they came, the flood light was on. They began to shout look at them, look at them and immediately open fire and shooting sporadically. The three policemen on duty have to lie low.


“When the robbers were sure they had subdued them, they went to the armory and made away with the riffles there. I learnt they are about 14 AK47 in number. They also released the detainees in the custody of the police.”


All attempts to get the police to react to the incident proved abortive as the new Commissioner of Police in the state, Bala Nassarrawa, was said to be away in Abuja, while his Deputy, Austine Evbakhavbokun, refused to speak to newsmen who visited his office. He asked one of his boys to tell newsmen to go and meet the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka who unfortunately was not in the office and his phone lines were also switched off.
