One had wished that BRICS will take a common position queuing behind our own Iweala, however, at the end of a meeting between Russia's finance minister and Kim, Russia threw its weight behind Obama's choice.

Russia will back Jim Yong Kim, the U.S. nominee for the next World Bank head, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said on Friday after meeting the candidate, who is in Moscow on his world tour to drum up support.

“Taking into account Mr. Kim’s considerable professional qualities as well as his experience and knowledge, the Russian Federation will support the candidacy of Jim Yong Kim during the voting by the bank’s board of directors,” the Russian Finance Ministry said in a statement.
The statement added that Mr. Kim had gained extensive experience working in Russia when he served in the World Health Organization (WHO).

Russia will have to review it's foreign policy. How can they rally behind a US nominee. they should be doing the direct opposite of the US.

They should not just bring that woman out and abandon her half way, Russia's Business News Channels РБК just reported that other BRICS countries are equally supporting Kim but will chose not to do so openly.
These are the same countries screaming against US domination and why emerging markets should be given a chance.. we all know Kim will win, but if you chose to fight then why not go all out sad sad

Then, they're not ready to replace the US as the new world power. Why can't they take a cue from China.

The only people thinking Okonjo Iweala has a good shot against a United States nominee are African nations whose votes count very little....and the media whose frenzies are unleashed with every minority campaign--- she's a woman, she's black, and she's smart roll out the drums, afterall it's how the current President of the USA got his job!

But things don't work that way when foreign governments are involved and the outcome is largely dependent on the strength of your foreign policy and the lobbying power of your government. The United states have people in its payroll who are gods at lobbying with and bribing foreign governments. Ultimately, the question Chinese/Indians/....(feel free to put whatever country here) will be asking themselves will be "What's in it for us"?...the answer to this could be anything as mundane as a "wink" from the US president to something considered honorary such as a dinner invitation to the White house.

Even the Russians who are natural enemies with Americans are smart enough to know that a disapproval of the United States candidate may be quite costly diplomatically especially when the choice is a nominee from a government who doesn't really pull so much effect anyway, again..."what's in it for Russia"?

Pick up the List, start with Great Britain, to France, to Germany. . ."what's in it for them?"...Nigerian government wouldn't take any offense if they choose not to vote her candidate, the United States government will take offense....You don't bet against the United States and win, whose side would you really want to be on?

We all know that Okonjo Iweala is very smart and all that stuff...but this is not a game of the smartest or the most experienced, if it were, then people like Joseph Stiglitz will come first in anyone's books, No?

Lmao.

How is that even possible? Negative population growth country, poor, low gdp growth.

As of the fall of the Soviet Union, it should have been clear that the US and even the Soviet Union are not mates. Talk less of Russia..

They're competitors who are trying to wrestle for space in the international space. Take for instance, is the president of the english premiership is been elected and a candidate from chelsea and another one from Wigan athletic are the forerunners, who do you think Manchester united will go for? You guessed right.

Russia has what it takes to become a world power just like the soviet union once was. Mind you, Russia includes a large chunk of what used to be called Soviet specialist.

Guy Russia don't have that backbone to be a world power,Soviet Union's strength was a collective one and Russia have tried to match that strength for over 3 decades now and that has been their bitterness towards the US.
As for China they stand a better change if they can improve their foreign policies, appreciate the currency and grow their GDP which I doubt will happen anytime soon.

The world lost faith in NOI the moment she became a minister in Nigeria followed by the subsequent subsidy removal tussle between the FEC led by NOI and the masses.

Nigerians need to stop believing their own hype, The GIANT OF AFRICA anyone??
People told me here it was not important at all if Obama came to Nigeria 1st or not...as a matter of fact I was told he was unimportant and his visit to Nigeria or approval of Nigeria is not needed as he is a no body!!

Welcome to international politics where powers r shared at diner tables n handshakes n winks and photo-ups can stranslate into billions of dollars in business and prestige on the world stage!

There is a fatal flaw in the way Nigerians do not understand how the world works....but insists they rule the world lol!

You don't think that us here in America and the Europeans r going to hand over the presidency of the world bank to a Nigerian in the current economic crisis we r in
Dream on people! Anyway, not right now n not this time!

Let her perform miracles in Nigeria and since we r watching...we will see the transformation she brings there and if she is as good as they say she is, then Nigeria needs her more than the rest of the world considering how desperate things r there in Nigeria right now!

I am not the least surprised at the Russian decision to side with the US nominee, Kim. Anybody who understands Russian foreign policy will know that the Russians only do what they will benefit from. (An example is the current crisis in Syria). In this case, it is obvious that the Russians have agreed with the US choice in order to get something back in return. Secondly, they most certainly don't trust a black African to be the head of the World bank. That's Russia for you.

My take is Ngozi has no chance. This is an election year in the US. If Kim doesnt get the post it will be a weapon for the Republicans against Obama. Obama will most certainly not allow that to happen. He is not the most powerful man in the world for nothing.

well I think have been vindicated by my view about the goose chase by our own NOI chances of getting the appointment,my response was even deleted by the Nairaland Cabals that have almost zero tolerant to contrary view. With the speed with which it was deleted just reminded me of what is happening in the macro society,Nairaland been a miniature Nigeria.l think one of the major catalyst for development is tolerant and wholesome respect for other people's view whether or not they follow your school of thought.Personally it Will not add one link to my income if she achieve her aim so my view is just about analysing the situation on ground and coming up with a realistic answer which is now unfolding
