First - I don't see the difference between what you stated and how I phrased you. The key point to note in your statement is that box-to-box is given license to bomb forward while anchor isn't given that license.

Second - a defender can operate as a center forward ..... with varying levels of efficiency off course (your words and logic). Since the level of efficiency is not so important, I wonder why coaches don't replace strikers with defenders when the strikers are not delivering. Why not switch the roles of Torres and Cahill? abeg, lampard just padded up stats for club & country, if we narrow it down to open play assists, he's not better than mikel obi(2005 circa). scholes is the best english midfielder of his generation. forget padded stats!

lampard - 173 assists
115 open play + 58 set play

do the ratio of open play to set play & you will see lampard depends on dead ball situations to pad stats more than scholes.

at least, his ratio is about 1 to 3.....steven gerrard is the worst of the lot. without dead ball situations, he is not better than djemba djemba.

lampard had 173 assists for chelsea in 47,934 league minutes.......scholes had 138 assists in 36,086 league minutes for man utd.

whether open play or set play, scholes copped 1 assist in every 261 league minutes in his career. lampard copped 1 assist in every 277 league minutes in his entire career.
