Christian elders in the north under the auspices of the Northern Christian Elders Forum (NORCEF) has advocated a return to regional governments with a weak centre as a way of solving the rising problems in the country.
NORCEF also blamed the government for the current attacks on churches and Christians in that part of the country.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its National Executive Council meeting in Kaduna, the Christian elders said that they had given the government ample time to retrain security forces on how to handle terrorist attacks, stressing that their patience is already running out.
The communiqué which was signed by the Chairman and Secretary, Evangelist Matthew Owojaiye and Iliya Yusuf respectively asked members of the National Assembly to support the clamour for a national conference to restructure Nigeria.
The communiqué reads:
“We are hereby calling for National Conference. We need to restructure Nigeria. We want the six geopolitical zones to become regions with a little alteration here and there according to the wishes of the people.
“Each zone will manage its resources and pay tax to the Federal Government as it was in the 1960- 63 Constitution. The federal government will take off its hands from Education, Agriculture, Water Resources, Industries, Mineral Resources, Research and Technology, health, Power Generation, Women Affairs, Youths and sports and Works and Housing.
“The federal government will be solely in charge of Defence, Foreign Affairs, Customs and Aviation. The regions and the FG would share Judiciary, the police and information ministry.
“All the government parastatals and ministries that siphon trillions of naira every year will be scrapped. Wastages and outright looting of public funds would be a thing of the past. Each region will develop at its own pace. The FG will get less than 30 per cent of what it is getting now. Taking power at the centre will become less attractive.
“We warn the National Assembly and the FG not to turn deaf ears to the cry for a national conference. It is an urgent need. Failure to do this may consume them as it may consume Nigeria.
“We agree with Elder Dr. Maitama Sule that Nigeria should not be allowed to break. We commend the Northern Elders for calling for meetings to see how to build unity in the North.”

These things need to shut up already. What has regional Government to do with what they may be dealing with today?

Good call.
The centre needs to be sufficiently weakened if Nigeria is going to work.

Things? You call people things?

Well it might not have everything to do with their problem, but might be a good start in finding solution to their problem.

Rubbish . . . delusions of the small-minded, is what I call what you stated above. The house is burning today, but these people are advocating that their breakfast include akara. . . . how the heck is that a solution to anything?

What exactly is regional Government going to do to the crisis they are facing? Annihilate the Islam fundamentalists in the populace? Kill off Boko Haram? Reduce number of Almajiri's and uneducated youths on the streets? Create a Uthopia up north for these Christians? Make Sharia go away? What does giving more power to the local governments in the North do for Northern Christians? Some of these governments already have their special Sharia Police in place . . what does strengthening that do for Northern Christians?

Tell me, which of the above can be accomplished by moving from the current system to Regional Government that you are joining them in advocating for?

Again., read my questions and tell me how exactly this plan here CONSTITUTES a solution. . . . that is the more important here. What does it "SOLVE" of the situation experienced today by these so-called Northern Christians?

You don't just go around labelling any vomit a solution. You at least have to be able to adequately show that it can be considered a solution, especially in the particular case it is to be applied, if approved.

Stop being ignorant. Solution to what?

Solution to the bombings, killings, and discrimination up north is regional Government. . .. handing more power to the same politicians who are the base for the problems up there? Are you people having some sort of genetic daft moment or something?

Christians up North advocating regional government in SOLUTION TO WHAT? You ought to ask yourselves that question first, and then ponder the logic of it if it even makes sense at all.

Absolutely correct my brother. This is a far easier solution that will aid accelerated progress than the break-up , fraught with so many covert and overt dangers, every Tom, D.i.c.k and Adekunle is demanding unthinkingly.

On a second thought, regional góvèrñment will brew crîsès in regions where christians are a minority because sharia may stand tall.
That's on a second tho after going through ur paragraph but regional góvèrñment should work well for the south.

That particular reference is a relative reference.

Relative to the north.
U pointed out religious differences as the key issues up North, the case down south is different, that's the relative reference, simple to understand.

Also, consider that the Northerners are not restricted to living only in the Northern states. Recent events in Kwara for example have more than revealed that divisions, even of the kind found up north can occur in southern areas. undecided
