Lagos Set To Begin Second Light Rail Project by TonySpike: 8:27am On May 27, 2012 |
by Rasheed Bisiriyu The Lagos State Government has begun talks with the preferred bidder of second light rail line, a 32km Agbado-Marine rail, known as the red line. This followed the advanced work already attained on the first line, a 27km Okokomaiko-Marina (blue line), being constructed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation. The Director- General, Public Private Partnerships, Lagos State, Mr. Ayo Gbeleyi, made this known during an interactive session with a Japanese trade mission to the state. A statement by the PPP office on Friday also reported the director-general to have expressed the commitment of the state government to the provision of public infrastructure. He said negotiation was ongoing with the firm, which he did not name, on the development of the 32km light rail metro transportation (red line). Gbeleyi said the contract would cover the provision of rolling stocks as well as the operation and maintenance of the line when commercial closure was eventually attained. Gbeleyi, who is also a special adviser to the state governor, said the project would considerably ease traffic congestion in Lagos metropolis when fully on-stream. According to him, an average of 400,000 passengers would be conveyed daily. “Also, the project is expected to generate over 8,000 jobs through direct and indirect employment opportunities,” he added. According to him, construction work is rapidly progressing on 27km blue line (from Okokomaiko to Marina), with construction works on the first Phase from National Theatre to Mile 2, while the contract for the construction of the second phase from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko has been awarded to CCECC. Why are they awarding the contracts in phases and good job for the second project as i think they don't need for this to complete before starting the next one. One more thing is that they should just try to involve everyone because i don't want a reason that when he leaves and the next person will just wake up to cancel these projects. |

I like this part of your comment ........ They should just involve everybody..... Truly the pace of this project to me is pretty slow. This project when completed has the capacity of transforming the landscape of Lagos. |

And it is shameful for a party to hold the center all these years plus almost three-quarters of the states, and only be able to point to two oil-money bloated states as evidence of work-in-progress. There is no doubt that ACN represents a better working party for Nigeria than the useless PDP. ACN is not perfect, but can be perfected. Fashola is achieving what the FG could not achieve in 50+ years of nationhood - twice over. Eko Ile: |

This light rail project is a good example for the delta state leadership headed by governor Emmanuel Uduaghan but quite sadly he will turn his mind to wasteful project that does not reflect development. The Dsc aladja rail project running through Warri, Agbarho, Agbor to Ajaokuta steel industry in kogi was never fired up by the delta state govt. They just seem not to force successive govt to work on the project Uduaghan creates a false impression before deltan that the delta state govt is poor which is completely false. |

If i'm not mistaking the second rail project is the redline. It will run on the existing NRC tracks or corridor [i forgot]. All the investors and lagos state have to do is buy the rail cars, construct a thrid rail and the train stations and install rail signals. I dont believe they will be building any new rails since NRC and the FG rehabilitated that rail line not to long ago. but i may be wrong |
