Ghanaian Movies Banned In Nigeria by Nobody: 7:47pm On Jun 23, 2012
SPECULATIONS are rife that the once harmonious relationship between the Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood and its counterpart, Ghana’s Ghollywood,is currently under threat as the movie marketers under the aegis of Film, Video Producers and Marketers Association of Nigeria (FVPMAN) has placed embargo on Ghanaian films with effect from the end of this month.

The association has also resolved to halt the distribution of films produced by non-professionals. It insists that if such film(s) must be distributed at all, its right of ownership should be transferred to its members on negotiation.

*Nollywood films on display

The FVPMAN chairman, Onitsha branch, Mr. Uzo Godson Nwosu who confirmed this development to HVP, said this position was taken after the association’s general meeting last weekend in Onitsha.

According to him, the decision became necessary following the position taken by their Ghanaian counterparts who have banned the distribution of Nigerian films in their country long time ago.

His words, “starting from the first week of August, no Ghanaian film will be allowed to enter the Nigerian market again. We have resolved that no Ghanaian film will be distributed within our controlled market. Our Ghanaian counterparts have long stopped distributing our films in their country, and given this development, we have no choice than to reciprocate the gesture.” FVPMAN boss stated.

Nwosu who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Guinks Investment said any of their members who failed to compile with this new order will either be prosecuted or have his goods confiscated by the association.

The marketer said the association is finalising plans to storm Ghana any moment from now, particularly to confront those local television stations who are illegally airing Nigerian films without obtaining permission from the right owners.

Also, given the problem associated with “second tier market”(where a producer is compelled to observe a three-month grace before releasing his film into the market in a large quality), Nwosu said the association has decided to reversed the trend.

Film owners, according to him, are now free to release their films into the market without necessarily observing the mandatory three months grace before doing so.

They will also be required to obtain censors’ board and copy right commission’s documents in addition to registering the film with the sum of N10,000 with the FVPMAN.

“In order to move the association forward, we have resolved to address the problem of second tier market.” FVPMAN boss further stated.

Its a welcomed development. Those ghanians have the habit of frustrating nigerian business in their country with unfavorable laws.

U guys should go and make films that'll match Ghanaians standards instead of attaching cheap excuses. Afterall, the consumers reserve the right to buy whatever they like with their money.

Nice one, long overdue. This action we all know was prompted by the ghananians themselves banning Nigeria films out of cheap envy on how big our industry had grown in Africa even with our halfbaked films..(lol). Nigeria must stand up to our status and pay back any country that demeans it..South africa learnt her lesson 2months ago never to deport Nigerians anyhow under the guise of fake yellow fever cards.

It is high time we started using our tax-payer's money develop our own country instead of helping some African countries restore peace. Many dont appreciate our effort. They see us as fools who wants put other people's houses in order, yet fire is burning ours. The other time,it was green flag,SA Police tore 9ja passport and now banning our movies.Drastic actions need to be taken before some of these countries start burning our flags all in the name of hatred.A word they say is enough for the wise.

I support this100%. The level at which Ghanaians whom we haboured and rehabilitated just a few years ago are showing aggression to Nigerians is becoming alarming. Out of pure envy they banned Nigerian films. Out of pure envy they Are destroying shops owned by Nigerians. Their president suddenly feels like a super man because we have a weak president in comparison. No problems oo. We will definitely regain our position again. Once more I say welcome development .

How legal is this? Confiscate someone's goods because he's distributing Ghanaian movies? That can be taken as theft. On what grounds can he 'prosecute' erring members sef?

Why not simply withdraw the erring party's license to distribute or something like that?
Re: Ghanaian Movies Banned In Nigeria by Nobody: 1:57pm On Jun 24, 2012
our mind have been programmed by what we watch, people that are saying they like ghanian movies, tell us the truth if they remove the sexual, porn and naked parts of the films will you still watch them? but when ever you here in the name of Jesus, you are quick to fast forward the film. that's how God will fast forward you.ghanians dont like Nigerians its so obvious if you go to ghana.

As for me i prefer Ghanian films they are more organized, the nigerian film industry is just trying to kill the Ghollywood market, because a lot of Nigerians now prefer that of Ghana.
