the golf 4 is a good car as I own one and it hardly gives problems, but I would not recommend using it for this type of activity because of the road conditions and somewhat high maintenance. I would recommend the Camry 96/97 models for sheer workhorse ability. However, the 10-year limitation on cars means you may not want to 'smuggle' any model before 2002 in. They are still available for $2000 - $3500. I guess you are looking for a car under 1m.
