Career / Why Konga Sacks Workers Every Six Months by dridowu: 10:51am On Aug 03, 2016
Nigeria’s online marketplace, Konga has said its business development strategy remains the underlying cause of reducing its workforce every six months.
Konga stated this after disengaging another set of employees penultimate week.

Recall that in January this year, Konga sacked 80 employees, about 10 per cent of its workforce. At the time, the company blamed it on the prevailing tough economic situation. It stated that the decision to let some employees go was not ‘taken lightly.’

“The decision to restructure and realign our company’s focus to be more agile in the prevailing local economic conditions is not one that was taken lightly,” Konga had said. It added: “With this restructuring and by taking advantage of new innovations and upcoming retail opportunities in the market space, we are optimistic that we are on the path to grow an even healthier and more sustainable business, whilst delivering best-in-class service to our customers.”
However, six months down the lane, Konga disengaged another undisclosed number of employees, but this time, it did not blame the economy but instead said it had been the marketplace’s business strategy over the past two years. According to the company, this strategy had worked very well for the company over the past two years. It added that “even the sacked workers usually move to other companies to accomplish great things.”

“Nigeria’s largest online mall, Konga.com, will lay off some of its employees, as part of its business development strategy whereby it reviews staff strength every six months. Konga has been doing this consistently over the last two years and usually let go of staff that still go on and do great things elsewhere.”

In the statement, Konga’s Chief Executive Officer, Shola Adekoya stated that, “The restructuring which also entails workforce reduction is a prudent and necessary step for the long term success of the company. The reorganizing will also impact the business model as we continue to do retail but only focus on the products that customers really like with high throughput in the warehouse and that will leave other products to strategic merchants that will take over some of the products in a marketplace fashion.”

Sports / John Obi Mikel Changes His Name After Nigeria Mistake 13 Years Ago by dridowu: 1:57pm On Aug 02, 2016
Chelsea fans are no strangers to multiple monikers given their recent history of Brazilian talents, but it’s not often that an established Stamford Bridge star makes an official name change midway through their career.

Mikel was born John Michael Nchekwube Obinna (the son of Michael Obi) in 1987, but a mistake in 2003 changed things for the midfielder.

During the registration process for the 2003 Fifa Under-17 World Championships, the Nigeria Football Association mistakenly submitted ‘Michael’ as ‘Mikel’ for the tournament in Finland.

The competition ended in disappointment as Nigeria failed to qualify from their group despite Mikel scoring during a win against Australia, but the midfielder decided to keep his new name.
The Chelsea midfielder says the mistake had a “special ring to it,” and from joining Chelsea in 2006 he went by ‘Mikel John Obi’ instead of ‘John Obi Mikel.’

And the midfielder has now decided to officially change his full name to Mikel John Obi.

But Chelsea fans need not worry about their new 2016/17 replica shirts need not worry as ‘Mikel/12’ will stay on the jersey.

Mikel will miss the start of the new Premier League season, instead representing Nigeria at the Rio 2016 Olympics as one of the Super Eagles’ three designated over-23 players.
The midfielder has won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League and four FA Cups at Stamford Bridge, as well as lifting the Africa Cup of Nations in his 75-cap Nigeria career.

Phones / Simon Petrus Invents Simless Phone That Doesn’t Use Airtime In Namibia by dridowu: 7:25pm On Jul 29, 2016
A Namibian schoolboy in the country’s Ohagwena Region has come up with a sim-less mobile phone that does not require airtime to make calls.

The Grade 12 learner, Simon Petrus, a pupil at Abraham Iyambo Senior Secondary School created the phone using spares from a phone and television set, New Era reports.

Complete with a light bulb, fan and charger socket, the handset functions off power supplied through a radiator and is able to make calls to anywhere through the use of radio frequencies.

The invention, which is made up of a radio system, is attached to a box and also allows the user to view one TV channel on it.

Petrus is reported to have won a gold medal at national level last year for his invention of a two-in-one machine that that works as both a seed drier and cooler.

His invention of two years has been highly sponsored by his unemployed parents, the schoolboy admitted and he hopes the invention would be successful and be able to be carried further.

The development marks the latest in a series of innovative projects by students within the southern African nation.

Joshua Nghaamwa, a self-taught inventor, is reported to have created a satellite using parts from radios, cellphones and other electronics, The Namibian reports.

The satellite, believed to strengthen internet connectivity, is small enough to fit in a laptop bag and has a USB port that allows it to be connected to a modem, router or cellphone, increasing internet speed and allows for a better online experience.

Nghaamwa says he wants to introduce the device throughout the African market, so as to boost ICT on the continent.

Business / GPRTU Petitions Mahama Over Dangote by dridowu: 10:38am On Jul 29, 2016
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has petitioned the Mahama government to intervene and stop Nigerian business magnet, Aliko Dangote, from taking over the transport business, which is employing thousands of Ghanaian drivers and other ancillary staff.

The petition came in the wake of Dangote importing into the country, one thousand trucks to facilitate the distribution of its cement across the country, instead of relying on local transporters, as other cement manufacturing companies are doing.

A letter dated 25th July, 2016, and signed by Mr Sai Issah, Chairman of a Tema branch of the union to the Ghanaian authorities noted that GPRTU is not against the business tycoon investing in Ghana, but he must not be seen to be pushing locals out of their businesses.

According to the letter, apart from the truck owners who are directly affected, artisans such as mechanics, auto electricians, welders and spare parts dealers who keep their vehicles running will all be thrown out of business to the detriment of the citizenry.
The worried truck owners said as transporters, they often go for loans from the commercial banks to cushion their business, pay insurance premium and other taxes, only to be rendered jobless by the emergence of Dangote in an industry reserved for only Ghanaian citizens.

On the other hand, the truck owners have said that they are prepared to enter into agreement with Dangote to purchase his imported vehicles to cart the cement anywhere in the country for him, rather than being compelled to re-export from the country.

Dangote cement, about a decade ago obtained license as Greenview Cement to bag powdered cement in the country, but for some months now is engaging in the importation of bagged cement from Nigeria, a situation which is creating friction between the company and the local cement manufacturers.

Politics / Netanyahu Likely To Attend Summit In Nigeria By End Of Yea by dridowu: 10:25am On Jul 29, 2016
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, spearheading an intense Israeli diplomatic initiative in Africa, is expected to travel to West Africa by the end of the year to take part in a summit of the 15-member Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to be held in Abuja, Nigeria.

Netanyahu returned from a four-day, four-country visit to east Africa earlier this month, where he met at a summit in Uganda with leaders from seven East African countries.

On Thursday he met in his office with Marcel Alain de Souza, the president of ECOWAS. The two men signed a joint declaration of intent for greater cooperation between Israel and the organization, which represents countries that have a combined population of some 320 million people.

The declaration states that both parties “positively view the participation of the prime minister of the State of Israel in the ECOWAS summit in the near future.”

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas recently addressed the African Union summit in Rwanda, a privilege not given Netanyahu because, unlike the PA, Israel does not have observer status in that organization. During Netanyahu's recent trip to Africa, the leaders of Kenya and Ethiopia publicly pledged to rectify that situation.

Among the 15 countries in ECOWAS are two with whom Israel does not have diplomatic relations: Niger and Mali. Earlier this month Israel re-established diplomatic ties with Guinea, which is another ECOWAS state.

Foreign Ministry director-general Dore Gold said that this group “is one of the most important sub-regional organizations in Africa, and it brings the Prime Minister's [Africa] initiative, that started with east African countries like Kenya and Ethiopia, to the western part of the continent.”

Gold said that while de Soussa, from Benin, does not take action without consulting the other states, he does not know whether he specifically called the leaders of Niger and Mali before embarking on his visit to Israel and signing the letter of intent for increased cooperation.

The two men discussed deepening their cooperation particularly in the field of agriculture, desertification, water, education and health.

Security issues were also raised, and in the declaration of intent Israel stated that “it stands with the people of the ECOWAS countries in their ongoing battle against militant terrorism that is plaguing Africa.”

The Islamic State affiliated Boko Haram is very active in West Africa, particularly Nigeria.

This was the first ever meeting between an Israeli prime minister and the president of ECOWAS, even though Israel has had a relationship with that organization for the last decade.

In addition to Guinea, Mali, Niger and Nigeria, ECOWAS is also made up of the following states: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Coite d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.

Celebrities / Beautiful Nubia Discredit Vanguard Newspaper For Publishing Fake Interview by dridowu: 11:51am On Jul 28, 2016
Segun Akinlolu
This FAKE interview was published in Vanguard Nigeria on Wednesday, July 27. I didn't sit for any such interview and those are not my words. Some corrupt, inept, mediocre journalist cooked up those words and had them published in a major/national newspaper. I do not subscribe to the views expressed in the write-up. This is in the realm of impersonation, character assassination and libel.
Unfortunately, the general slide in quality continues unabated in Nigeria. Mediocres have taken over every sector - in government, business, sports, arts, journalism. People of high intellect and ability continue to leave in droves for supposedly more sane societies, and now the land is bestridden by the progeny of our extreme corruption and lack of corporate gumption.
I do not take kindly to people using my name to promote their own small-minded agendas. This is not the first time newspapers and bloggers in Nigeria have cooked up views purportedly sourced from me. In the past I chose to let it pass. This time, I draw the line. Perhaps a good starting point of redress would be for the editor of the Vanguard to publicly apologize for this fraudulent act and then go ahead and put his house in order.
Come on people, we can do better than this!

We can’t progress with this kind of attitude in the music industry – Beautiful Nubia

Lagos – Nigerian foremost contemporary folk and roots musician, Segun Akinlolu on Wednesday stressed the need to diversify to the music industry to ensure growth.

Akinlolu known as “beautiful Nubia’’ said in Lagos that the music industry was subjective, because there were a lot of things lacking, as everyone was doing their individual thing.

According to him, there is no cohesion, coordination and unity in the industry.

"we cannot progress with this kind of attitude in the music industry, and we cannot leave a legacy for the generations to come.

“We would only progress in the music industry when every musical genre come together to do things in unity.

“All of us in the industry at the moment should keep working towards making the music industry a better place to enhance our act.

“We have to look for ways to put structures in place to be able to move it to the next level and also make it better for those coming after us,” he said.

He noted that abroad “music is music’’, no matter the genre of music, as far as people identify with it and like it.

“In Nigeria, you get to hear that this is gospel, this is reggae, this is hip hop, and pop and it doesn’t work that way.

“We should learn not to segregate about things in this country, and move the music industry forward.

“If you go to music school, they will not teach you different genre while you learn to play guitar, band, percussions and others, so why the separation of things, he asked?

“We should learn to unite and do things well in this country not only in the areas of music.’’

NAN reports that Akinlolu is the Chief Executive Officer, EniObanke Music Production.

He was born in Ibadan, Nigeria and attended the University of Ibadan, and graduated with a doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1992.

He practiced Vet medicine for a period of time before going to music school in Canada.

Crime / Indonesia To Execute 5 Nigerians By Firing Squad On July 29, 2016 by dridowu: 3:53pm On Jul 27, 2016
The Friday execution will reportedly be carried out by firing squad.

Indonesia is all set to carry out its next round of executions on Friday, 29 July, which will include several foreign nationals. A Pakistani embassy official has reportedly said that one of those is a Pakistani national.

The country, which faced international criticism after executing 14 prisoners in January and April 2015 – most of whom were found guilty of drug peddling, has 16 more prisoners on its list for this year. The Friday execution will be carried out by firing squad and will include a citizen of Nigeria and one of Zimbabwe, in addition to the Pakistani prisoner.

Syed Zahid Raza, charge d'affaires at the Pakistani embassy in capital Jakarta, told Reuters on Tuesday, 26 July, that the Indonesian attorney general's office invited him to meet with their officials. He was then informed about the imminent execution of Zulfikar Ali, convicted of smuggling drugs, when the fresh round of executions take place on Friday.

The diplomat, however, said that Ali will make one last attempt to escape capital punishment by appealing for clemency directly to Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

Pakistan has reportedly requested Indonesia to stay Ali's execution, arguing that his 2005 trial was unfair. But Indonesia is determined to crack down on drug traffickers saying the country is facing a "drugs emergency" and thus, they will show no mercy to the offenders.

Meanwhile, Noor Rochmad, Junior Attorney General for public crime affairs in Indonesia, was quoted by Antara News as saying on Monday (25 July) that the office would announce the date and number of inmates to be executed once those details are finalised.

The executions are due to take place at a maximum security prison on Nusakambangan Island in Central Java, Reuters reported, adding that those likely to face the death penalty this week include citizens of France, Britain and the Philippines.

Indonesia's online news website Tempo reported on Tuesday that 14 death row prisoners convicted in drug trafficking cases have already been moved to an isolation cell in Batu Penitentiary in the Nusakambangan Island. They were moved in the isolation cell around 10pm local time on Monday (25 July). "There are 14 people. Two from Pasir Putih Penitentiary, two from Kembang Kuning Penitentiary, one from Besi Penitentiary, and nine from Batu Penitentiary," one source in Batu Penitentiary told the news portal.

Sports / Adebayo Akinfenwa 'the Beast' Wants Chicken For Pre-match Before England Call-up by dridowu: 10:03am On Jul 26, 2016
The 34-year-old Wycombe striker is available for selection as long as Sam Allardyce serves chicken and contacts him with the news via WhatsApp

Adebayo Akinfenwa has told Sam Allardyce he is ready for an England call-up... but only if chicken is served for a pre-match snack.

The 34-year-old striker, who recently joined Wycombe Wanderers, is ready to be England's new saviour "for the last 17 minutes of a game" and partner Andy Carroll up front in a new-look Three Lions squad.

With Wayne Rooney's captaincy up in the air, Akinfenwa's super-sub promise could yet garner more rewards, just as long as 'Big Sam' has his WhatsApp details.
"I'm going to say it out loud: I'm available for England selection if they serve chicken for pre-match [food]," he said at partypoker's 'Big Bluff' event.

"That's it. Chicken, me. No chicken, no me. That's not arrogant, that's just what I need to eat.

"Sam, big man, listen, hit me up on WhatsApp because I feel, [in the] last 20 or 17 minutes of the game, bring me on, back stick and BAM. Me and Carroll.

"I'm not saying you are long ball, but I'm effective in the last 17 minutes of games. Gareth Ainsworth hit me up on WhatsApp and I signed for him. You could hit me up on WhatsApp, so let's make it happen."

Politics / Ondo School Workers Protest Non-payment Of 13 Months’ Salaries by dridowu: 9:37am On Jul 26, 2016
Activities were disrupted yesterday morning at the St Francis Caring Heart Mega School, Owaluwa in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State.
This followed a peaceful protest staged by non-teaching staff of the school over non-payment of their 13 months salaries.
The aggrieved workers, as early as 7.30am, stormed the school, locked the gate and prevented the teachers and pupils from entering the school.
The protesting workers, numbering 15, carried placards different inscriptions such as “Governor Mimiko pay our money “, “We are starving”, “We have children too” and several others.
Speaking on behalf of the protesters,Mr. Abu Ayodeji said they have been pressing for the payment of their salaries since the beginning of the year,”but all our efforts only received negative response from the government”.
Ayodeji said they would continue the protest until the government finds solution to the problem.
Commissioner of Education Jide Adejuyigbe was not available for comments as all his mobile phones were switched off as at the time of filing this report.
But a source with the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), who craved for anonymity, said the workers were not directly on the payroll of the government,”but effort was at an advancedstage to pay the contractor for inward settlement of his workers”.
Normalcy, however, returned to the school following the intervention of some eminent persons in the town and the police.

Crime / Nigerian Arrested In Delhi For Supplying Drugs by dridowu: 12:42pm On Jul 25, 2016
Nigerian arrested in Delhi for supplying drugs.
Two other Punjab residents also arrested.
Nigerian was staying on business visa which expired in May.

A team from Narcotics Control Bureau on Sunday arrested a Nigerian who had been supplying drugs to a youth from Punjab. The team also apprehended two Punjab residents who were taking over the consignment of 25 gms of heroin from the Nigerian near Mata Roop Rani Maggo Devi Hospital in Uttam Nagar, Delhi on July 24.

In the follow up search at the house of the Nigerian, named Ifeanyi Okafor, in Uttam Nagar, another 180 gms of heroin and 620 gms of amphetamine was recovered.

DRUGS SUPPLIER HELD

Ifeanyi Okafor revealed that he had been dealing in drugs for the last four years, ever since he had come to India. He was staying in a rented accommodation in Vipin Garden area of Uttam Nagar, Delhi. He further revealed that he was dealing in all kinds of drugs, including heroin, amphetamine and other synthetic drugs.

Zonal Director, NCB Delhi Zone, Rohit Sharma revealed that Okafor was one of the major suppliers of drugs to the Punjabi youth. The agency had received a specific tip off in this regard and was on the look out for Okafor for the past two months, revealed Sharma.

The Nigerian, had been staying in Delhi on a business visa which got expired in May 2016. The claims of Okafor that he had got his visa renewed are being verified by the NCB.

Rimpu, one of the Punjab youth arrested, is a resident of Muktsar, Punjab. He revealed that he was a drug addict and was not getting high quality drugs at affordable rates in Punjab while in Delhi they get cheaper and good quality drugs. He had been coming to Delhi to buy drugs from the Nigerians for the last five months.

Accused Balwinder Singh is a labourer and had been taking drugs for the last 15 years. He had recently sold off his vehicle for Rs 3 lakh and spent the entire amount to fund his problem of drug addiction.

NEW TREND OF INDIGENOUS HEROIN

NCB is now inquiring into the sources from where Okafor was procuring drugs in Delhi. Top officials in the NCB have revealed that a new trend of indigenous heroin is being manufactured in illicit labs in UP and opium is being sourced from West Bengal's Malda. This is in addition to the traditional South West Asian heroin of Afghanistan origin which has been finding its way to Delhi through Pakistan via the border states.

Sharma revealed that there have been recent reports that indigenous heroin manufactured in parts of UP was being smuggled into Delhi and from there it was reaching Punjab with the aid of some African natives.

Crime / Nigerian That Sells ‘Seeds That Cure AIDS’ In India Arrested by dridowu: 12:42pm On Jul 24, 2016
A Nigerian national and three accomplices were arrested by the Local Crime Branch (LCB), Thane Rural for cheating a resident local of nearly Rs. 23 lakh in an online scam. Police said the Nigerian offered a dealership for ‘special seeds’ that grow only in Nigeria, which he claimed can cure AIDS. The seeds turned out to be ‘Bitter Kola’ (botanical name: Garcinia kola ), which grows in abundance in Western and Central Africa.

Anil Mathur, a resident of Naya Nagar, Mira Road came in contact with the Nigerian, identified as Uzoma Eleazar, on social media and developed a friendship. Eleazar offered Mr. Mathur a dealership in seeds that he claimed used to produce expensive medicines in Nigeria. The victim fell for it and had paid nearly Rs. 23 lakh since June 21.

Police said Eleazar managed to sell seeds in 400-gram packets for Rs. 1 lakh each. API Prafull Wagh, LCB, Thane Rural said the seeds are sold for Rs. 1,000 per kg in Nigeria.

Mr. Wagh said, “We have arrested Eleazar and his Indian agents, Taufiq Hussain, 47, a resident of Panvel, Fazal Ahmed Syed, 28, and Yogesh Kumar Patil, 31, from Navi Mumbai. All accused have been remanded in police custody till July 27 by a Thane court. We have also seized around 10 mobile handsets using which the accused called Mr. Mathur from different numbers, three laptops, Rs 4.20 lakh in cash and packets containing the seeds.”

He said more arrests are likely as the accused have conned several people in Maharashtra and other states through an online scam. “We have appealed to the victims to come forward and register complaints against the accused,” Mr. Wagh said.

Crime / Italy Jails 3 Nigerian For Cultism by dridowu: 4:02pm On Jul 22, 2016
(Reuters) - An Italian court has jailed three members of a Nigerian crime gang in Palermo, Sicily, sentencing them to at least a decade in prison each for crimes including attempted murder.

Prosecutors said the trio brought to Palermo the practices of the "" cult, which Nigerian police said carried out ritual murders, mutilation and rape in the early 1990s.

In Sicily, they used mafia techniques in carrying out attempted murder, armed robbery, bodily harm, extortion and drug-dealing, and answered to Italy's most storied mafia organisation, the Cosa Nostra, as if they were its subjects, prosecutors said.

The court's verdict, reached on Wednesday and made available on Friday, handed down sentences of 12 years and four months to the gang's boss and just over 10 years each to two others.

The group is believed to have attacked two people with bottles and axes late one night in January 2014 in Palermo's Ballaro street market, where police later found the victims with gashed foreheads.

The was among several secret societies that took hold in Nigerian universities in the 1990s, allegedly attacking people on campus with guns and knives, raping women who refused to pay protection money and engaging in blood-drinking rituals.

Politics / FLASHBACK: How Gov. Fayose Killed Scores In Ekiti By Lere Olayinka by dridowu: 9:28am On Jul 19, 2016
However, funny how times flies, Fayose, after inflicting electoral injuries on the psyche of Ekiti people now mounts the podium, preaching against election rigging. Saint Fayose now goes about preaching rule of law, good governance, free and fair elections. He wants to be seen as a Saul who has given up his persecution of Christians and turned to Paul.

As a student of a missionary school, Roman Catholic Primary School to be precise, I learnt early enough the story of Paul the Apostle. Saul, who later became Paul, was born around the same time as Christ. He was sent to the Jewish school of learning at Jerusalem to study law. After his studies, he returned to Tarsus but soon after the death of Christ he returned to Jerusalem where Christianity was becoming wide-spread. Saul was a key player in the persecution of Christians. However, after his encounter with Jesus Christ, on his way to Damascus to persecute some suspected Christians, Saul became converted and this conversion changed the course of his life.

In Ekiti, there is one Saul that is daily struggling to become Paul. In the case of this Saul, he does not need an encounter with Jesus Christ to become a born again because he is not out to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but that of politics. He won’t even become anything close to Paul Apostle because his name was never Saul in the first instance. He was Peter Ayodele Oluwayose, who later said his father; Pastor John Oluwayose erred by replacing Ifa (god of divination) in his name with Oluwa (God).

For over three years that Ayodele Fayose was the governor of Ekiti State; he was everything but a democrat. Rule of law, free and fair election, political tolerance and respect for traditional institution was anathema to him. Those of us who dared him then had bitter tales to tell. For instance, just because I was courageous enough to expose his N1.4 billion poultry scam and other atrocities, using a local newspaper, he (Fayose) obtained a warrant of arrest against my good-self and made arrangement with ‘’boys” in the prison to break my legs in detention. I escaped the arrest by whiskers. The arrest warrant saga was confirmed to me by the judge, who signed it. I had gone to the judge to sign a form, when he saw my name and exclaimed; “this world is indeed a small place. I signed your arrest warrant in 2005 but I thank God today because my conscience is clear. I vacated the order a week after without letting Fayose know about it.” The judge is still alive!
I was not the only one who tasted Fayose’s bitter pills. Others, including the former governor of Ekiti State, Engr. Segun Oni, Minister of State for Federal Capital Territory, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade (rtd.), Chief Idowu Odeyemi, Senator Bode Olowoporoku, Chief Ojo Falegan, Chief George Femi-Ojo, Taiye Fasuba, Surveyor Abiodun Aluko, Chief Afe Babalola, Chief Kunle Ogunlade, Femi Falana, former governors Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Adeniyi Adebayo and Segun Osoba had more mind boggling stories to tell too.

Fayose waged war against anyone he perceived as a threat to his hold on power. Even his own siblings were not left out. Ask Bimpe and Emmanuel, they sure still remember what they went through in the hands of Fayose, their own brother.

In Fayose’s days as governor, there was nothing like free and fair election in his electoral dictionary. Elections to him must be won by whatever means possible and that he demonstrated during the 2004 local government elections in the State, May 28, 2005 councillorship bye-election in Ifaki-Ekiti, Ekiti South Federal Constituency II bye-election among others.

Interestingly, the local council elections were conducted by the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC)– members of which were appointed by Fayose himself.
In the case of the local government elections in Ekiti South West Local Government, which was held on April 3, 2004, Senator Olowoporoku, whose wife, Anike was the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) candidate gave the following account; “By the midnight of 2nd April, 2004 we heard that soldiers had invaded Iyin Ekiti, the home of ex-Governor Adeniyi Adebayo and had put former Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State and Ex-Governors Osoba of Ogun State and Niyi Adebayo of Ekiti State under arrest of no movement in and out of the compound in a state of incommunicado.

“By about 9.00 a.m, people were ready to go and cast their ballots despite the war songs of the armed forces all over the town throughout the night. Their resolve was to go and vote in spite of the reported heavy presence of soldiers and mobile policemen in the town. Several people were on the queue to vote by 10.30a.m when Mr. Ayo Fayose suddenly emerged in sleeveless shirt and knickers with a terrifying sword and also in convoy of about 80 vehicles. His eyes were red like a monster who has just finished drinking blood. Soldiers and “kill and go” (mobile policemen) in hundreds started shooting into the air, asking everybody to run for their dear lives. People ran away, any presiding officers or agents whether of PDP or AD or ANPP or NCP who attempted to protect the ballot boxes were beaten to a state of coma or in a number of extreme cases, they were shot in the legs.

“In a rage and something more than madness, the governor Mr. Ayo Fayose was overheard shouting “where is Bode Olowoporoku, I want to kill him, I have immunity for eight years as Governor of Ekiti State.”

Olowoporoku’s account was corroborated by the reports in various national dailies on Sunday, April 4, 2004. Sunday Punch captioned it thus; “LG bye-election; Soldiers, mobile policemen invade Ekiti. Govt officials hijack ballot boxes.

The News Magazine, in its April 5, 2004 edition captioned Fayose’s reign of terror thus; “The Power Drunk Governor; How Fayose’s men murdered students. His style shocks the nation.

But if Fayose’s show of madness on April 2 and 3, 2004 actually shocked the nation as reported by The News Magazine, what he did on May 28, 2005 must have sent the whole country into a coma.

Sensing that his preferred candidate was losing the Ifaki Ward II councillorship bye-election, Fayose stormed the town with thugs and mobile policemen and in a twinkling of an eye, Tunde Omojola, an in-law to Hon. Labaika Suleiman, the National Conscience Party (NCP) candidate in the election had been killed. His murder was allegedly supervised by Fayose.

Not done with the Ifaki escapade, Fayose moved to Mugbagba, Ado-Ekiti where the Alliance for Democracy (AD) was inaugurating its Ado Local Government Executives. Fayose was personally involved in the smashing of vehicle windscreens and stealing of property, including raw cash kept in the vehicles.

Yesterday, I read in the papers, Fayose, who used to refer to himself as the “master rigger” calling on voters to protect their votes and resist rigging in next year’s elections. In other words, Saint Fayose, who spearheaded the rigging of elections and unprecedented electoral violence when he was governor, now, wants the 2014 election, which he hopes to contest to be free and fair!

But he (Fayose) surely needs more than mere press statements. For him to be seen as a Saul who has turned to Paul, Fayose must show penitence. He must visit the families of Tunde Omojola, Dr. Ayo Daramola, nine students of the College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti killed during a mere protest, the likes of Aseweje, Ben Ogundana, Dapo Osunniyi, Kamoru Folorunso, Ojo Sunday and several others that were visited with terror during the 2004 local council polls in Ilawe, Ogotun and Igbara-Odo to seek amnesty.

Most importantly too, Fayose must go on his bended knees in front of the entire congregation of the Emmanuel Anglican Cathedral, Okesa, Ado-Ekiti, whose church’s two entrance gates he blocked with sand, gravel and gutter, deliberately dug in front of the church just because Chief Ojo Falegan, his perceived opponent, worshipped in the church.

Honestly, like Paul Apostle, Fayose can be admitted into the club of sainthood; after all, our Lord is a forgiving God. But he must be ready to show repentance by confessing that he once rigged elections, perpetrated electoral violence and persecuted opposition politicians. Until then, his quest for sainthood, by preaching free and fair elections will remain in the dustbin of morality.
