Travel / Swiss-born Nigerian Faces Deportation From Switzerland by dridowu: 12:44pm On Jul 14, 2016
A 28-year-old man will likely be deported from Switzerland to Nigeria –despite the fact that he barely speaks English and has never been to the African country.

Authorities say it is his own fault because he has committed so many crimes.
Swiss law dictates that people without a Swiss passport can be deported for up to 15 years if they commit a serious crime, or two lesser crimes within a decade. Earlier this year, Swiss voters rejected a controversial initiative to automatically deport foreigners who commit certain crimes.
Born in Switzerland, the man with Nigerian citizenship has been getting into trouble regularly since the age of 14. After several instances of juvenile delinquency, convictions for criminal damage, assault, threats and sexual assault followed. Most recently, he was sentenced to four years in prison for repeatedly stabbing somebody in a fight.
Last year, canton Zurich’s migration office ruled that the man should leave the country immediately after serving his sentence. Zurich’s cantonal administrative court has confirmed the withdrawal of his residence permit, though the judgement is not yet final.
The court acknowledged that leaving Switzerland for an essentially foreign country would be a hardship, but maintained that he was young enough to learn a new language and build a new life for himself in Nigeria.

Ultimately, Swiss security interests prevailed, stated the court, pointing out that the Nigerian citizen had been given plenty of second chances.
About 25% of people living in Switzerland do not have Swiss citizenship, though some 300,000 were born in the country to foreign parents. Unlike countries such as the United States, being born on Swiss soil does not grant a person the right to Swiss citizenship.

Travel / Victor Adepoju's Wifi-Enabled Taxi In Ghana (Photo) by dridowu: 9:50am On Jul 14, 2016
“Ghanaians spend a lot of time stuck in traffic. Most of us understand just how frustrating that can be, but my new initiative in Ghana is making the gridlock just a little more bearable.”

These were the words of a Ghana-based Nigerian businessman, Victor Odepoju, who has kick start an internet-enabled-taxi cab business in Ghana’s capital, Accra.

According to Victor the idea to run a wifi-enabled-taxi cab business was to give the taxi cab business in Ghana a new facelift and keep passengers connected to the internet even as they spend several hours in traffic.

Explaining how he conceived the innovative idea to The al-hAJJ in an exclusive interview, Mr Adepoju noted “I have listen to folks complained about leaving their valuables in anonymous taxis and whenever they called the drivers insults them so I thought about it and decided to do something that will make the customers feel secure and comfortable”.

He added that “…also charges by taxis these days are quite unbearable so I have decided to make my services affordable. Then looking at the traffic in town; seeing passengers bored in the taxis I decided to add free wifi in addition to refreshment.”

The taxi-cab driver stated that he commenced business in Ghana with a Ford Fist 2012 model in June, but one of his customers “was impressed with my idea and decided to add one of his car to it for the same business. So now we have two cars we are using as taxis and both are wifi-enabled.”

“I was at Honey Suckle, a restaurant at Osu, picking clients and a man spotted the cab and he approached me…so he said he likes what I am doing that he had a car in his compound that he is not using. So he decided to invest it. I beg him to paint it yellow because that is how I painted the Ford I am using and he agreed,” he explained.

Giving insight into how he treats his customers, Mr Adepoju said “I added the free wifi so that when there is traffic customers can browse and not get bored. I also allow customers to choose their choice of music. I have a complimentary card which bears the wifi name and password at the back. I got the idea of adding the password to the business card because when I am driving customers ask me and distract my driving focus so I decided to give them card when they are on board.”

“Currently I use surfline. So when you're on board I ask you, please sir, do you care for free wifi to browse? I beg customers not to download and so far they have complied. I am using surfline but busy 4 G approached me recently that they want to take over. They promised to give us the wifi while they put a sticker on our cabs but we are yet to conclude that contract,” he explained.

Unlike the high charges of other taxi cabs in the capital, Mr Adepoju, who said he had to work as security officer “watchman” for several years to save money for his cab business, said his charges are affordable such that he accepts as low as GHC10 irrespective of the distant.

“When I meet you as a customer and I charge you, for instance, for GHC20 and you tell me you can pay GHC10 I don't ignore you I pick you. And this practice has really helped me because they keep recommending me to other customers. Just two days ago I drove all the way from Spintex to Dansoman to pick a tertiary student back to Accra mall. She gave me GHC20. And now she has recommended me to two people who pays better,” he noted.

Despite his affordable charges, Mr Adepoju who holds a Bachelor of Theology degree, said “business is booming to the extent that we have registered a company, BFCABSERVICE, and we also have a website were customers could log on and book for our services online. Last month I save GHC2000 and I am hoping to buy a new Ford by the end of the year because our client base is gradually expanding.”

Crime / Indonesia To Execute Nigerian And Zimbabwean This Year For Drug Trafficking by dridowu: 6:49pm On Jul 13, 2016
Indonesia plans to execute this year at least two foreign convicts, one from Nigeria and another from Zimbabwe, the attorney general said on Wednesday.

President Joko Widodo has pledged to increase the number of executions this year and next as part of his crackdown on drugs.

Asked if there were any foreigners on the list of convicts to be executed, Attorney General Muhammad Prasetyo told reporters: “We have foreigners, among them from Nigeria and Zimbabwe.”

He did not elaborate on the crimes of which they were convicted.

Prasetyo added that no convicts from the United States, Europe or Australia were on the list to be executed this year.

A 59-year-old British women, Lindsay Sandiford, was sentenced to death after being convicted in 2013 of trying to smuggle cocaine worth US$2.5 million into the country.

A Philippine maid, Mary Jane Veloso, got a last-minute reprieve last year in response to a request from Manila after an employment recruiter, whom Veloso had accused of planting drugs in her luggage, gave herself up to police in the Philippines.

Last year Indonesia executed 14 people, mostly foreign drug traffickers. Prasetyo previously said at least 16 prisoners would be executed this year and more than double that number next year.

Politics / Edo Guber: PDP Unsettled Over Candidate As INEC Deadline Ends Today by dridowu: 8:30am On Jul 12, 2016
As the deadline for submission of candidates for the Edo State governorship election ends today, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday disclosed that it was yet to be provided with the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

INEC’s deputy director, Voter Education and Publicity, Nick Dazang, who disclosed this to LEADERSHIP, added that the commission was yet to take a decision on which of the candidates from the factions it would accept.

He further stated that, so far, only six political parties had submitted names of their candidates for the election.

However, deputy national chairman of the Ali Modu Sheriff faction of the party, Cairo Ojuogboh, told LEADERSHIP that the faction had submitted the name of Matthew Iduoriyekemwen to INEC, adding that the ruling of a Federal High Court in Abuja gave them the authority to do so.

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and Iduoriyekemwen had emerged candidates from separate primaries conducted by the warring camps in the party. While Ize-Iyamu emerged the candidate from the primaries held by the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led national caretaker committee, Iduoriyekemwen emerged candidate of the Sheriff-led leadership of the party.

Also, while a July 4 Federal High Court judgement in Port Harcourt recognised Makarfi’s committee as the legitimate leadership of the party, a Federal High Court in Abuja, however, granted an ex parte motion to Sheriff, which mandated INEC to recognise only candidates submitted by Sheriff for the Edo and Ondo guber elections.

But responding to an inquiry from LEADERSHIP ahead of the deadline, Mr. Dazang, who was in Lagos yesterday, said the commission was yet to take a decision on which of the candidates to recognise.

He said: “As at 4:52pm, I sent an inquiry to our director in charge of political party monitoring and I was told that only six political parties have submitted their candidates, and PDP is not among them. But the deadline is tomorrow and they are free to do so.”

When asked which of the camps’ candidates the commission would accept, he said, “As at this time, INEC has not taken a decision. If there is any development I will call you back.”

On whether the name of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Godwin Obaseki, had been submitted, the deputy director said he could not confirm as he was yet to get the names of the six political parties that had submitted candidates.

He, however, promised to make the list available immediately it is given to him.

LEADERSHIP recalls that Sheriff’s primary did not meet the 21-day notice to INEC, a requirement specified in the Electoral Act, unlike the Makarfi-organised primary which was monitored by INEC.

Reacting, however, Ojuogboh told LEADERSHIP that the faction had completed the processes for the submission of its candidate’s name. He said it was understandable that the deputy director was not aware because the submission of candidates was not done in his department.

“In any case we have no fear that our candidate will be accepted as the legitimate candidate of PDP for the election. The court ruled that Sheriff is the only person that can submit candidates for the Edo and Ondo guber elections.

“That judgement was specific and no court of competent jurisdiction can overrule it. The court has recognised Sheriff as the national chairman; the truth is the truth and nobody can change it,” he said.

It was, however, gathered that members of the PDP national caretaker committee were locked in a meeting yesterday over the issue.

Attempts to get the Makarfi group for reaction were futile as phone calls to the spokesman of the committee, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, rang out and were not returned.

Crime / Nigerian Student Snatches A Cab In India by dridowu: 1:31pm On Jul 10, 2016
The chase

2.20 am; Bilekahalli signal

Cab driver stops for a break

Ibrahim snatches key from driver

Gets into cab and drives away

Heads to Shivajinagar

Turns to Hennur

Heads to Electronics City

Cops head to toll gate

5.30 am; Hosur Road toll gate

Ibrahim stops at toll gate

Nabbed by cops

The police in Bengaluru spent the wee hours of Saturday tracking an allegedly inebriated youth who had attacked a cab driver at Bilekahalli, off Bannerghatta Road, and subsequently drove away in his car.

For three hours, the night patrol police and their colleagues in the traffic police drove the length and breadth of Bengaluru trying to track the ‘runaway car’.

What adds to the seriousness of the case is that the youth was drunk, said the police.

Luckily, he was not involved in any accident.

R. Hitendra, additional commissioner (Traffic) said, “Traffic is very thin during the early morning hours, which might have averted a major tragedy.”

It began around 2.20 am when the driver, Venkatesh (40), a resident of Thanisandra, was ‘attending to the call of nature’ by the roadside at Bilekahalli signal. “A youth approached me from behind and asked for the car keys. He seemed drunk. When I refused, he kicked me in the abdomen, snatched the keys and fled with the car,” said Venkatesh, who alerted his cab company MegaCabs, who in turn called the police.

The cab is equipped with a GPS system, which helped the cops track the vehicle across the city.

“The youth was crisscrossing the city. From Bannerghatta Road, he went to Shivajinagar and then to Hennur. From Hennur, he began heading towards Electronics City. We rushed to the toll gate on Hosur Road, blocked the car and arrested him around 5.30 am,” said Inspector B.K. Shekhar Mico Layout Police Station, who led the police team. The youth seemed to have suspected that he was being trailed because he disconnected the GPS system minutes before he was stopped at the toll gate.

“Our hunch that he would go to that particular spot paid off,” Mr. Shekhar said. As the cops tried apprehending the youth, he came out shouting, “No Harm. I Love India.” He was identified as Ibrahim Abdul Mulallabi (33), a Nigerian studying BBM in a college at Yelahanka. He lives with a friend in K.S. Layout. His visa had expired in January 2016, cops said. Mr. Shekhar said that Ibrahim was sent for a medical test.

Travel / Daniel Henry, A Nigerian, Dies In Mumbai India (photo) by dridowu: 3:44pm On Jul 08, 2016
30-year-old Daniel Henry's was found dead in his rented flat in Nalasopara.
Henry, whose business visa had expired in April, may have been electrocuted, cops believe.
The matter came to light on Thursday night when neighbours complained of foul smell.

MUMBAI: A 30-year-old Nigerian national whose business visa had expired in April was found dead in his rented flat in Nalasopara on Thursday night.

The Tuling Police has ruled out murder and suspect the victim to have been electrocuted in the kitchen.

Inspector Kailash Barve said that Daniel Henry may have died around three days ago due to electrocution in the kitchen of his flat in Moregaon, Nalasopara (east) where the body was found.

The matter came to light on Thursday night when neighbours complained of foul smell from Henry's flat. They informed the police who broke open the main door. The body was decomposed, said the police.

His right hand fingers and wrist were touching the compressor of the refrigerator indicating that he could have died of electrocution. Police suspect that he may have touched the compressor in a drunken state.

Henry's business visa had expired on April 22. The flat was rented out to him by the owner, Qadeer Syed, in December 2015.

Building residents said that while Henry stayed alone, he often invited male friends for parties that went on till late night.

The police have not got any details about Henry's family. Police said that they will contact the Nigerian consulate for information about Henry.

The body has been sent to J J hospital for autopsy.

The flat owner has been summoned to the police station for details on Henry's family. The flat has been sealed.

Politics / Ghana Former President Jerry Rawlings Wants Nigeria Loot Returned Globally by dridowu: 2:33pm On Jul 08, 2016
Ghana's former President Jerry John Rawlings has canvassed a global campaign for the return of Nigeria's stolen funds stashed away in developed countries.

According to him, the international community should spearhead the initiative in a manner similar to that for the release of the kidnapped Chibok girls.

Rawlings, who spoke to The Guardian in Ghana on the outcome of the recent high-level London Conference on Corruption, charged developed countries to pay more than lip-service to the return of the funds to Nigeria and some other countries.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated that those who looted the common treasury would not know peace unless they returned what they stole as the administration would continue to turn the heat on them.

Rawlings said: "The high-level London conference on corruption offers an opportunity not only for countries in Africa and the developing world to revise and enhance their strategies for combating corruption, but also for developed countries whose banks have served as a safe haven for stolen wealth from Africa and elsewhere to repatriate those funds.
"I also implore the international community to join the chorus for the return of the loot, especially to a country like Nigeria while she enjoys the leadership of a proven man of integrity." He took a swipe at the developed countries who organise anti-corruption workshops with no concrete action to address issues that concern them."Let us stop this support and mere conference of words and follow up with serious deeds. The commitment to corruption should work both ways. Developed countries cannot continue to harbour illegally-acquired funds from Africa and expect the latter to successfully stem the source of corruption.

"If we could transmit the integrity from our culture and various languages into the Western language and behaviour we've adopted, we could end up restoring the needed level of integrity to create a more civilised behaviour. In other words, we will be restoring integrity and credibility back to the spoken word."

"Let me speak about these characters corrupting us and sending our loot into their economies as part and parcel of their capitalist programme. When you begin to speak up, they get nervous. They resent and they don't like nationalists, pan- Africanists. When the time comes, they would sacrifice you and keep your loot.

"Let's put pressure on those African governments to bring those stolen monies out. Obama and his friends should give them sleepless nights just like the way we handled the Chibok girls' issue. Let's go beyond roundtable meetings. The Commonwealth should be made to serve a better purpose. This calls for a loud noise. "From London to Switzerland, they are holding on to these stolen monies with impunity. More pressure is needed from all angles. Obama, the whole lot of them should pitch in and not do what they are doing in South America, in Brazil. Some of us can see through it.

"When they have leaders with socialist inclinations, they would want to rout them out of office the way it is happening over there. No, that is not good enough. We can see through it. It is a pity."

Rawlings, who is regarded as an anti-corruption crusader, also reviewed the level of morality in African society and prescribed lie detector tests for courtrooms.

His words: "Attaching lie detector tests to courthouses could go a long way in restoring the culture of truthfulness, justice and social stability. Time and money would be saved adjudicating on the issues.

"If only lie detector machines could be attached to the lying mouths of some of these so-called professional journalists and commentators, our society would stay focused and the lift-off in the society will also become inevitable. Any loss of lift will not undermine the stability of our society."

Buhari made the appeal to looters of public funds yesterday when he received a delegation of residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) who came to pay him the traditional Sallah homage at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The President added: "Please tell those with plenty of money which does not belong to them? to try and negotiate and return it in peace, so that both they and us will be in peace, otherwise we will continue to look for it and they won't know any peace."

Crime / 5 Nigerians & 1 South African Arrested In Cape Town For Online Dating Scam by dridowu: 12:52pm On Jul 08, 2016
CAPE TOWN - A Cape Town woman and her Nigerian husband, together with four Nigerian accomplices, were arrested on Thursday in connection with an alleged online dating scam.

According to a police statement, the six are to appear in the Cape Town District Court on Friday on fraud charges.

Police said two were arrested in Burgundy Estate and the others at their apartment in Summer Greens.

The arrests resulted from an ongoing investigation into an online dating scam in which unsuspecting female victims were targeted and robbed.

Thus far, seven victims have come forward who have been conned out of a combined amount of close to R400,000 police said.

It is alleged that the suspects created fake accounts on online dating sites to lure women.

The suspects chatted with the victims for a while before starting to come up with different scenarios which would see women depositing or transferring money to the banking details which the suspects provided.

The 31-year-old Cape Town woman, who allegedly received the money via money market transactions, was found with R50,000 in cash when she was arrested.

All women who had been victims of online dating scams were urged to come forward so that their matters could also be investigated.

Politics / Tension In PDP Over Akpabio's Romance With APC by dridowu: 9:18am On Jul 06, 2016
The alarm bell is abuzz. Senator Godswill Akpabio, immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom State and Senate Minority Leader, may dump the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Right? Wrong? To be or not to be? Well, this insinuation, real or fictional, is bad news to the APC in Akwa Ibom State and the PDP as a whole.
We will shortly examine why.
If you are not patient with learning, please back off at this point.
First, why this red alert across political divides?
The PDP caucus in the Senate is reportedly rattled. Akpabio has been accused of engaging in anti-party activities by his colleagues after his secret visit to the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu leaked.
The fear is that, Akpabio may soon dump the PDP for the APC.
This puzzle comes on the heels of PDP senators announcing withdrawal of their support for President Muhammadu Buhari on June 22.
Ironically the statement was read by Emmanuel Bawcha, Deputy Minority Leader, as Akpabio was magnified, only by his absence. The PDP senators said the reason for their decision was because of the “belligerent” stance of the APC-led government, citing the cases of Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose and the Senate leadership among others.
This reversal, came less than a year after the PDP Senate caucus declared support for the President Buhari administration.
It was on September, 30, 2015, that Akpabio spoke onbehalf of PDP senators, pledging that support and urged the ruling party to see PDP as a trusted ally in matters of governance in order to move the nation forward. More noteworthy is his addendum: a charge to the APC to stop chasing away those who were willing to support the government of the day. Could that explain why he didn’t appear in the latest PDP recant?
Worse is that the PDP is stricken and afflicted with internal strife, decay and corrosive infighting.
Actually, the PDP more than anything needs its most authentic leaders now than ever before. Akpabio ranks high on this reputation. Besides him in the current equation, others are easily, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, Governors Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Fayose (Ekiti), Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa) Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo) and former Senate President David Mark.
Of course, all current PDP governors are factors in that leadership scale.
Truth however be told, Akpabio is about the strongest and the weakest link of the PDP as it stands. We will debate this before we analyze why Akpabio is the beautiful bride for both APC and PDP.
Senator Akpabio, is arguably, the most sagacious, urbane and discerning politician Akwa Ibom State ever saw.
Although, he leans to despise being identified as a politician, our judgment is never left in doubt, that beyond late Senator Victor Akan, none other from this part, has, bestrode the political turf like Akpabio.
Parading a resume, apt for tag, as the proverbial cat with nine lives, he has surpassed his forebears: the late Ibanga Udo Akpabio, and Senator Justice Nsima Ukpong Akpabio with his depth, networking and reach. Thriving from being the most decorated governor of his Class 2007-2015 set, he was easily the poster face of the PDP and deservedly emerged, the pioneer Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum.
With all his paramountcy and halo, something in him died each time he lost a contest. Of the nine lives, let’s see what was lost.

Following a devastating defeat of his candidate in the election into the post of the chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, that took place at the Rivers State Lodge, Asokoro, Abuja on Friday, May 25, 2013, Akpabio lost political glitz.
Then Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, with a score of 19-17 votes, beat, Jonah Jang of Plateau state; (Jang’s candidature was reportedly agreed upon when the PDP governors met at the Akwa Ibom State Governor’s Lodge hours to the election). Akpabio, who rejected that outcome, then flaunted a sheet of paper containing 19 signatures, which he said belonged to the governors that agreed to vote for Jang.
Even though the then President, Goodluck Jonathan, recognised the jang faction, NGF was split.
Akpabio, however was sucked by the betrayal of his faith in their pact.
The next time he lost, was when former President Jonathan conceded defeat to Buhari in a telephone conversation, hours before the final result of the 2015 presidential elections was made official.
He had campaigned vigourously and religiously for his party and Jonathan. Not used to coming second in political contests, some lustre in Akpabio died afterwards.
That is where his Love-Hate relationship with the APC came full circle. The charge of the newly formed mega-party led by his former colleague-governors, who had defected from the PDP presented a monstrous challenge to his ascendancy.
He came back home, rallied his troops and vowed to retain his political space. But for the resilience of men like Akpabio, the APC cavalry could have overrun the region.
In helping facilitate the victory of the PDP candidate, Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, in the 2015 governorship polls, Akpabio, like a phoenix, resurrected his political paragon. With the judicial confirmation of Governor Emmanuel’s mandate by the Supreme Court, Akpabio’s reputation became imperishable.
He was well on his way to making good his wish of being rated, in his words, as “a governor who produced the best goveronor.”
But for a third time, something in Akpabio withered. His entanglement with the Economic and Financial crimes Commission, EFCC, was no doubt a sore punch.
Akpabio, was quizzed by the anti-graft agency over alleged multi-billion naira fraud and money laundering. This was sequel to a petition written by one Mr. Leo Ekpenyong, an Abuja based lawyer, who alleged stealing of N108.1 billion of Akwa Ibom State’s funds by Akpabio.
While his political opponents were yet celebrating reports of his arrest, he was released around 11pm on that eventful October 16, 2015. This was uncommon in our climes, going for the uncommon Transformer. The experiences of several others, who are usually remanded in EFCC custody, then sent to Kuje prison, and thereafter, released on stringent, conditional bail terms by the court litters the chronicles as proof.
To underscore how important this reprieve was, the social media was awash with pictures of Senator Akpabio having dinner at late hour, regaled by family and friends.
The near blot, was enough to slay a giant in him.

Howbeit, his ever increasing stature says a different thing. On arriving the Senate, Akpabio upended the bookmakers to emerge at the critical core of the National Assembly’s principal officers, bagging Senate Minority Leader. For a first timer, this was eye-catching. It is also no secret, he helped midwife the present leadership cast of the Senate in particular, and National Assembly at large. To that extent, no serious party will take him lightly.
The APC has no foothold in the South-South geo-political zone. With all their pressure, showboating and exertions, the fiesty Amaechi, is their biggest laurel.
Unfortunately, Amaechi has lost his homefront and can’t muster enough followership to lead the South-South into APC’s embrace.
That is where, for the far sighted and pragmatic Asiwaju Tinubu, an Akpabio can become a major missing piece of the political jigsaw.
Like him or hate him, Akpabio is the ‘Blue Whale’ of the South- South. If he tilts to the APC with his prominence and goodwill, then, APC would have made a major inroad that can potentially buoy the fortunes of the party in the region without much toil and sweat.
If that is good business for the APC National Leader, it is a poisoned chalice for the APC rank and file back home.
Akpabio moving to APC will have its far reaching implications of change. He will change the dynamics. Revise the trajectories. Displace and rearrange political interests. He will no doubt, even become more luminous, outshining the drudgery of its existing chieftains.
That is reason, APC in Akwa Ibom will rather, this political calculation never happens. It is their worse nightmare.
Akpabio’s defection, and that is, if it ever happens, will also impact on the state PDP. As surely as the sun rises and sets, he may move with his governor and party faithfuls en masse and that will be a tsunami. It is not probable. It is also not impossible to conjecture.
That said, the question is: will Akpabio leave the PDP for APC? That will be the biggest political upset of this republic.
Given his antecedents, it is not likely and still far-fetched. Recall the vermin, when he scolded the Group of Seven (G7) governors, minding that, they were at liberty to leave the PDP if they felt aggrieved on November 25, 2013.
Akpabio made this remark in a chat with State House correspondents during the launch of the third phase of the Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria (YouWiN) programme by President Jonathan at the Presidential Villa. The governors who had been at loggerheads with the leadership of the party, back then, were, Amaechi (Rivers), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (Kano), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Sule Lamido (Jigawa) and Murtala Nyako (Adamawa). Eventually five left, save Aliyu and Lamido.
Will he now eat his vomit and join the other five? Well, interest is superior to logic in politics and that’s a clear idea on a plausible answer.
Again, Akpabio is touted as a possible vice presidential candidate to run with a Northerner for the 2019 presidential election on PDP ticket. Some even went as far as rumouring his interest to run for the Presidency in the same ‘magic’ year.
But a May 4, 2016 statement by his media aide, Anietie Ekong, reads in part, “... Senator Akpabio has no ambition of contesting for the Presidency in 2019 and is not behind such campaigns. It is the handiwork of mischief makers,” didn’t however foreclose the issue of Vice Presidential run.
So, what will be his bargain in the APC when the PDP supposedly offers a wider range of options including the office he wields currently?
Then, there is this raging PDP infighting. Akpabio, may hold that against the party and walk-out on it.
He has remained at most, non-commital, as the issue festers. It is quite unlike the very vocal Akpabio Nigerians are enheartened, listening to. The unstated fact is, with this evisceration of the PDP, something in Akpabio is drained. For a politician, divinely blessed with survivalist instinct, Akpabio will not get scorched with a party that disembowels itself. He will move, if the wilting of PDP continues. Of course, with the scheming wiles of a Tinubu watching this self-inflicted unraveling, PDP will be lucky to survive the drain. Tinubu, is also skilled enough to fish in PDP’s troubled waters for the gold fish. Are you making sense out of this?
Finally, as a student of literature and its rich metaphors that instruct us about the metaphysical and psycho-spiritual, something in Akpabio’s recent history rings a bell. Akpabio survived what could have been a fatal motor accident on August 31, 2015, at Bolingo Junction, Abuja.
A sober Akpabio spoke of the miracle later, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, during a convocation to mark the 28th anniversary of Akwa Ibom State. He regretted that his traducers and some state-based tabloids were wishing him dead and writing ill about his fate.
But on his return from the traumatic experience , Akpabio said: “The wish of the enemy has been defeated. All the newspapers in Akwa Ibom State, tomorrow your headlines should be ‘Akpabio rises again’, ‘Akpabio rises again’.” Isn’t his political career on the rise again?
To underscore his bipartisan political credit, he made a disclosure. “Let me place on record,” he said, “...the support of President Buhari who did something extraordinary. The President called the hospital that I was in London. He called the hospital line, and said put me through to the Minority Leader of the Senate who is in your hospital. And they connected him. The room number was Room 215. And he spoke with me. He said, ‘Akpabio we are praying for you. Insha Allah, it shall be well with you’.”
That was a disappointing revelation for the ears of APC opponents, who would rather have a President Buhari at loggerheads with Akpabio.
In politics, all options are on the table. That Akpabio survived that accident, is obvious testament, that he has nine lives, in and out of politics. He is still living it.
What tomorrow holds on the political burner, we will see.
I don’t see PDP in Akwa Ibom State, in a hurry to lose its prized asset.
In alliance with Governor Emmanuel as party leader, they remain formidable and can again resist the surge of APC and other parties.
The PDP as a whole, will do well to renew its contract with one of its most promising members. The same way, Barcelona has tied down Brazilian superstar, Neymar with a long-term five-year contract, after doing same with world’s best footballer, Argentina’s Lionel Messi.
For now, we wait on our watch.
