olofofo:

@george_d

nice work.

@lolu

long time, now everyone will start calling me "key guy"

@all

I have used a motorized 1.8m dish and then moved on to a fixed 2.4m dish for my nilesat before moving to a 3m dish for nilesat as so on

the point on the fixed/motoriized arguement is thus:

if you want real entertainment in one package, a fixed 3m for niilesat is your best bet, because, u do not need to wait to flip channels, imagine watching SABC at intelsat 902 at 62E on your motorized dish and all of a sudden you need to change to cnn on Nss 7 cband at 22w and then u need to go back, apart from the wear and tear of motorizing your dish, it gets really cumbersome after some time, but as Lolu pointed out. a motorized dish is great for anyone trying to experiment, but remember you can only watch one satellite at a time, so at the end of the day, your motorized dish is basically a fixed dish at some point.

@all

just laid my hand on a dreambox 500s like a mentioned a couple of days back and the question i keep asking myself is this:

how can the best technlology in the Satellite world have taken this long to get to us here?

this box is the BEST DECODER I have seen in my life
i will keep you updated .

@olofofo,

hen, person when never see dreambox in action no go understand wetin u de yarn.i feel u ojare.i will keep the house posted on the dream thing.

Hi all house members,
This are the results of the recently concluded 5 meter dish installation @warri together with my team members from kano.The dish belongs to a respected member of this great forum in person of BUTONEDAY
1-DISH FEATURES.
It is a standard steel constructed dish with aluminium made parabolic face(the paraboloic face is fully aluminium).with total diameter of 5 meter in size.the dish is capable of an azimuth movement of 270 degrees between left and right and also having a focal length of 73/(3.4)inches.it is driven by two jacks,using one for the azimuth turn and the other for the elevation.(refer to picture for details.)
2-DISH INSTALLATION:
The installation of the dish takes a minimum of about 4-5 days by 2-3 people. The construction of the dish basement takes  an average of 10 bags of cement depending on how strong u want it and it takes two days to dry at an average.the assembling of the dish stand and the parabolic base takes about two days too.then the tracking takes as much time as u want cos u will have to keep tracking everything that is trackable,and finally the cabling.
The dish is presently fitted with two ku band scaller rings and each of the ring is  carrying a ku lnb fitted with brass rings to make it a prime focus lnb which will as well boost the lnb’s signal reception. one of the lnb is centered and the other one is offset.the centered one is an echosat quad lnb and the offset one is a digisat quad lnb.both lnb’s are positioned inversely against each other.this is because of polarity challenge between providers on the east and on the west  due to the azimuth movement nature of the dish.(what this means is that if u are using just an lnb on it and u are moving from one position to another,the polarity will keep switching at every movement because the dish does not move like the normal motorized up and down movement that is widely known by all)so what we did was to use two lnb’s inversely positioned.

DISH POSITIONING:

HOTBIRD:

ELEVATION IN WARRI=11 DEGREES EAST
AZIMUTH IN WARRI=132 DEGREES EAST

NILESAT :

ELEVATION IN WARRI=17 DEGREES WEST------------------------------ELEVATION IN KANO=22 DEGREES WEST
AZIMUTH IN WARRI=245 DEGREES WEST-------------------------------AZIMUTH IN KANO=240 DEGREES WEST

The above difference make it glaring that kano  is higher in elevation.

RECEIVABLE HOTBIRD FREQUENCIES IN WARRI:

A total of 130 transponders were receivable on hotbird.some of which are listed below

12140 v 3695 75%
11975 H 27500 79%
11527 H 27500 83%
11745 H 27500 83%

12189 V 27500 82%
11357 V 27500 87%
11201 V 27500 75%

9-RAI
10-CYFROWY POLSAT
11-BIS
12-ARABESQUE
13-ALL S*X*X*X*X*X CHANNELS AND SO MANY OTHER PROVIDERS TOO.

Having a total of about 1,367 channels on hotbird.

All the above listed providers  and number of channels are all showing using a dreambox  receiver(DM 500S) which I took down to warri myself,and i am still in warri as i am making this post.

NILESAT:

Nilesat at warri gave a very big surprise using this 5 meter dish.the signal quality was something else even better than we originally expected.though,the dish when tested in kano before we brought it to warri  gives nothing less than 98% on all receivable frequencies.but the least frequency at warri gave about 64%.some of the frequencies that we got are:

11744 v 27479-89%
11764 v 27498-82%

@BUTONEDAY, Desjam,
Congratulations for taking FTA to another level. Maybe be one of these days you could consider placing a video on ’YouTube’ for the world to learn that something good and Hi-Tech can come from Africa; side-by-side with Mr. Klaus Schumacher’s 8 meter dish in South America!, posted at
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0JFP7NFx3s .

By the way, how much in US$ would it cost to assemble the dish: the aluminium sheets for parabolic surface, steel structure, welding costs, cabling, LNBs, labour costs, etc.? Maybe one of these days we could invite you over to East Africa to assembly/install one? Alternatively, you could prepare the parts at your city then we transport them (by cargo plane) from your city to mine for installation work (with you as the installation engineers of course)! Target birds? I am interested in shooting down Nilesat, Hotbird and Astra in East Africa. FTA business could also go international !

I noticed that the dates on your photos are 27/01/2007. Is it camera settings or were the photos taken in 2007? Just a joke. grin

That is simply amazing.That is a great source of reference not only in Naija but Africa as a whole.Africa is indeed proud of u.These are the challenges we Africans should be putting ourselves in.Not fighting each other.Many congrats

@BUTONEDAY,
The lion is king of the forest. The blue whale is king of the oceans. In FTA land there can be only one king and you have clinched that title. I have pictures of my own to support that of Dejsam in case there are still some here nursing doubts about this great feat. I will go ahead and post. Out the mouth of two or three witnesses, the truth shall be established:

@Dejsam,
Kudos to you for doing justice to this great achievement. I hail  your guys from kano too. They are too much! shocked

All rise as we officially crown BUTONEDAY the KING OF SAT!

@BUTONEDAY,
Bros, please better employ a receptionist ASAP to start recieving visitors from FTA land as I'm sure your abode will become a mecca of some sorts from now on. You are too much! shocked

@BUTONEDAY,   DEJSAM

Congrats our newly crowned KING OF FTA, BUTONEDAY.  Dejsam you didn't tell me you were going to install for a member.  When i was told the cost of the dish  lipsrsealed well it's not for the faint hearted as George would say.

@Olofofo,

with the dreambox the horizon is your limit, this box can work with cards married to decoders and with FTB almost all packages will be open to you.  If you have tried it on the net, have some free servers for you, reply.

NOTE: There are chinese clones be very careful, you don't flash with an original image otherwise you box will be history but cracked versions are always available.  Although Most European users claim the clones work better than the originals from germany.

have a plan to own one, but HD version. DM800HD not DM8000hd which costs more than 250K

@ all
good to see good things hapening from the hands of great and honorable members of this our intellectually inductive, mind librating, and explorative forum
On the issue of Fixed Vs Motorised dish.
To me, the advantages and shortcomings of both have been highlited. individual can now consider these and make up their mind on what method to embak upon, considering the resources  required. As have been said, it depend on what u want. But motorised, exposes you to so many advantages as stated by
Lolusky andOlofofo last post.

5m, 6m,----- . I thinkwe are heading to do the work of the Nigeria sprace research Agency. may be some of us shoulsd start thinking of designing  and constructiing a space shuttle. Enitan takes charge of the physics of launching, Dejsam takes charge of procurement and logistiks, George-D Manages while Butonday, Pito, Olofofo and others are part of a NEW 15-man Technical Crew. Not a bad proposal anyway wink
Space is real, gather all u can
@Dejsam, George D, Butoneday. Goodjob, friutfull effort.
Keep it up

You guys have seriously raised the bar for all Fta enthusiast.I greatly commend the effort you've put into making this a reality.Its not an easy feat as there are bound to be challenges.but with some of the best brains in FTA from this part of the world coming together,its not surprising that it is a reality today.Congrats to u all

i just checked out the site of dreambox and saw other versions too. having tried it out yourself and confirming its the best decoder yet, i just want to ask if it is now available in the market and if so for how much because its about 85usd on their website. would also like to know what advantages it would have over echolink on a 1.8m dish.
thanks

Can I receive any channel on w2 with 90cm dish?
Re: Official Thread Of Free To Air Satellite Tv (part 4) by GeorgeD1(m): 3:25pm On Jan 22, 2010
@jossybless,
@baba_egun,
@ohikhena,
@spaceman,
@all,

It is indeed a landmark achievment in the world of FTA and we are glad it's happening in our time. I make bold to declare that no amount of write up here can paint even one quarter of the reality on ground, hence it is better seen than talked about.

With over 500 channels on nilesat and over 1300 channels on hotbird all opened by the magic dreambox! CNN and gearone all hitting full signal bar! Eurobird 2 is like tracking NSS7/ku with 90cm dish! And, but for the blockade on the east side, ASTRA 2D (london, uk beam) already breathing on the signal spectrum!

This day, indeed, DISCOVERY is hereby FULFILLED before our very eyes!  shocked
