10 billion US Dollar is what I call a repayment for being loyal to a government that overworks you in a way that you feel you're enjoying.

May God bless you my broda. They are trying to divide us and conquer us. Home based or Diasporan, we all feel the same pain for Nigeria. Selfishness has taken away our culture to be our brother's keeper. We must focus on defeating the forces of evil so that Nigeria can return to the average man like me and you.

Deserves a big Amen!

Facts:
1. The money sent by Nigerians in diaspora helps support the national economy in no small measure, but more importantly, it rescues many otherwise despondent Nigerians from misery - school fees, house rent, debt settlement, etc.
2. The Nigerians who receive money from relatives abroad are in the minority, so not everyone is primarily affected or would see the need to feel gratitude. But they may be secondarily affected due to spin off effects on the economy.
3. Nigerians living abroad don't pick money on the streets. Like home-based Nigerians most of them toil to earn money and this should be appreciated.
4. Nobody has any right whatsoever to feel superior to or talk down on anybody. Diasporans who have spoken in this forum to the effect that "those at home should not expect us to come back if they don't fix that country" or "is it our fault that you can't get a visa" are getting it wrong. Most common people are concerned primarily about bread and butter issues first. Nobody is going to fix the country for you and nobody is beating the drums for you to come back. What it takes to have a good country or a bad one is elite consensus. You can be based anywhere and think of the best way to effect changes to the country if you are so inclined, or simply do what you can as you are currently doing by sending money to your relatives.
5. If care is not taken, this argument can be diversionary. The enemies of Nigerians are the power brokers and treasury looters who have taken our natural right to choose our leaders while they lock themselves in the common safe, gorging themselves and vomiting all over their shoes. The real heros are those who work hard and this includes danfo drivers, truck pushers, teachers, cleaners, and the diaspora people.

KunleOshob:

Well it is not a good comparison to use federal budget to compare remittances from abroad if you really want to know how much diaspora are contributing to the national economy. The ideal thing to use is a GDP comparison which i sated earlier. Our official GDP currently stands at $180 billion. [GDP is total value of economic activity in the formal/legitimate ecomony] The truth is that our real GDP is at least double that cause a lot of economic activity in this country goes unrecorded. Our informal / illegitimate economy might actually be bigger than what formal / legitimate. in other wards our real GDP when our activities are factored in could be as much as $360 billion and that would make the $10 billion Diaspora are sending home to be a paltry 2.7% of out total economy. That to me is not capable of shaking the national economy tongue

WELL ANALYZED BRO, i do acknowledge the fact that, diasporians deserve kudos, but Whatever anybody is sending back home cannot really logically and economically commensurate with Naija GDP as a whole.

$10b in 10 mths? That is wishful thinking. Where did they get that kind of money from? And by the way which Nigerians are we talkin about? Those in USA or UK that are still at the recieving end of 'their' global economic crunch. I see the hands of Nigerians at the world bank at work in these statistics. Well it makes for good lunch time conversation. Nothing more.

Dont be a retard, this is actually less than it was like 2yrs ago before theglobal recession hit, come on how hard is it to tally all the funds going to nigeria from western union and moneygram, its just a click of the main computers at these firms and u get the answer,
actually more money than $10bln was sent to nigeria cause there are also informal ways of sending money back,
i am just one in a million, but if u know how much i have sent back since january u will not be so skeptical

The most unfortunate thing (Lack of Knowledge anyway) about people at home is that, they often think that Diasporans are overworked or taxed because they are immigrant.

The failed to realise that even the nationals irrespective of the country also pay heavy/normal taxes and do work hard too.

Wisdom is principal sha but understanding/knowledge is KEY.

I wish one day Nigeria will grow and we will stop making hate talks.

This is just Western union and moneygram only. It does not include money we give friends or family members to give to people by hand when they are going home.

Here is one brother making it big in philadephia. We are proud of you. Just stay out of jail while doing what u do.

Now seriously, What they send back home is merely chop-money. How many tangible investments or businesses can one attribute to US dollar or British pound coming from diasporans in the last 10mths? This is actually very easy to work out. You can start by discounting the whole north and most other parts of Nigeria. You will be left with Lagos and Enugu. If you push 7 billion dollars in these two places, believe me you will know.
Re: Nigerians Abroad Remit $10bn Home In 2009 - World Bank by beknown(m): 2:10pm On Nov 13, 2009
My people, our brothers and sisters in the diaspora do well.

Many people do not know the big advantage we get from this money from abroad.

First, the money is sent to a friend or family in Nigeria
Second, the money is used to buy food or other things in the market
Third, market trader will be able to get money to pay school fees, look after their family, etc
Fourth, market trader pay tax for the store and government get money
Fifth, our economy get bigger and bigger
etc etc.

Let everybody pray for our people abroad, life is hard for them too.

Our people abroad have plenty investment in Nigeria (not just food!). For example, property investment in Lagos, Abuja, etc.

Food is very important. If people do not eat over a long period of time, there will be starvation and malnutrition.

Re: Nigerians Abroad Remit $10bn Home In 2009 - World Bank by OmoAlex: 3:10pm On Nov 13, 2009
$10 b Wow, and they are always forming like they dont send us in Naija.

If the remittance is in good faith, then we welcome and applaud you

But if it is so that you will have something to brag about, then get in line cos its a very long queue and $10b is just registration money grin grin grin

Nevertheless, that is what you call Patriotism

what the fu ck? where was i when this useless thread was opened?

You send money to feed your hungry families and then you think you deserve national award for that? Whats going on here? Who is praising who? Drug money and credit card fraud money wire back to Nigeria and y'all think you deserve national award for that? when will this self deception stop? Lets start another topic to say, all diasporians deserve awards because they send money home to feed their hungry families - what the F? dont send it, and wait what becomes of your family, and beside, most of them borrowed money to travel hence they have to pay it back. what the F?

Do these goons know how much an average American business man in Nigeria takes out of Nigeria to America yearly? Do you know how much the Chinese, Indians, South Africans make from Nigeria and send back to their home country daily? We talking billions daily, in the same dead economy, in the ame failed system, in the same rotten egemony that you ran away from, do you know how much? You stay there praising yourselves for sending money to feed your family! What arrant nonsence!

I agree with the fact that Americans, Indians, Chinese and some other nationals make 10000 times the amount that was reported as funds being sent to families and friends in Nigeria by Nigerians.

Guy, there are people that would reject offers to travel to UK, USA etc even with free tickets and accommodation. Do not imagine that everyone is interested in such.

And this "you may have been denied visa" is getting rather weak, monotonous and ineffective when responding to real issues. Tackle the issues raised and leave probability matters for mathematics students to sort out.

You want to know were I live? Ok. I live in New York city, NY, USA And you?. Talking about Americans, Indians and south Africa making more in Nigeria and sending home than us in abroad, how much do give you starving family? I may be living in America but you know what, I have my business, houses and cars in Nigeria as well in USA. How about u? can you go out off Nigeria and buy properties? For those of us that live in over seas, we have advantage having more things that u that base in Nigeria. Let say there is war in Nigeria today, can u go to another and be sure you have your properties in place? the answer is no. But if there is war in America today, I am sure of my properties in Nigeria. My family back home do ask us over here for anything because my families has more than a enough generating from family own business. The only family I care for back home is just my wife which will join me in two months time. How much have you contribute into Nigeria economy big mouth who cannot feed his own F ugly families?
