Politics / APC Primaries: Gov. Yari Dares Oshiomhole, Calls Supporters Out For Protest by olokeded: 8:31am On Oct 06, 2018
Gov. Abdul’aziz of Zamfara, on Friday called out his supporters for a peaceful protest over the decision of the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to cancel the party’s governorship primaries held on Wednesday.

“I am calling on all our members to come out and storm the state Police Headquarters tomorrow (Saturday) by 10 am for peaceful protest.

“We will continue with this decision until the national leadership of our party do what is right on this matter,” he said at a press conference in Gusau.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor is having running battle with eight governorship aspirants in the state over the conduct of direct primaries.

The governorship primaries held on Wednesday was cancelled by the party’s national secretariat and a fresh one is expected to hold on Saturday.

According to Abu Fari, chairman of the election panel, the cancellation was due to harassment and intimidation of voters and snatching of election materials by thugs sponsored by politicians.

Yari however dismissed the claim by the committee as false and warned its members not to step into Zamfara again.

“Our issue is with the National Secretariat of APC where Adams Oshiomhole continue be a dictator to party members, he acts as a mini god.

“You know, there is ongoing issue regarding the APC governorship primaries in the state, where the national headquarters sent a committee to conduct the election.

“It was very unfortunate that the committee canceled the election on Wednesday.

“We heard that the National Working Committee had dissolved the APC executive in the state and also send the same committee to Zamfara to repeat the exercise.

“I want to call on the national headquarters of the party that we will not accept the decision and we are not satisfied with the committee, we don’t have confidence in that committee.

“I am warning members of that committee that they should never come to Zamfara, they should never put their legs in this state, and anything that happens to them, Adams Oshiomhole should be held responsible.

“We will continue with this decision until the national leadership of the party are ready to do justice,” he stressed.

The governor dismissed insinuations that he had dumped the APC, saying nothing will make him leave the party.

“I remain in APC and I will never leave the party. No amount of pressure will make me to leave the APC.”

The governor added: “I was among the founders of this party, I was in Lagos, Nasarawa states for meetings before we gave birth to the APC, therefore no amount of pressure will make me to leave the party.

“You know, changing political party is not my tradition, therefore I will not change the party and the rumour going round is not true, I am not under any pressure to leave the party.”

NAN reports that Yari’s travails began when he anointed his commissioner of finance as the sole candidate of APC in the state, a decision challenged by eight aspirants including his deputy, Ibrahim Wakala.

The aspirants locally known as the G8, are a former governor of the state Aliyu Shinkafi, a serving Senator, Kabiru Marafa, and Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali.

Others include, Aminu Sani Jaji, Alhaji Dauda Lawal, Alhaji Abu Mahaji and Sagir Hamidu.

Health / Keep Off Rotten Tomatoes To Avoid Cancer, NAFDAC Warns Nigerians by olokeded: 9:17pm On Sep 28, 2018
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Friday warned Nigerians against the consumption of rotten tomatoes to forestall cancer.

Mrs Christiana Essenwa, a Deputy Director with the agency, gave the warning in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Onitsha.

According to her, rotten tomatoes contain micro organisms that induce cancer.

She explained that “once tomatoes become rotten, it will have micro organisms, mostly fungi, and fungi in rotten tomatoes produce mycotoxins which are deadly and induce cancer, and cause immune deficiency in man and animals.

“Mycotoxins are deadly, and can cause all sorts of poisoning in the body,” the director said.

She said that some research suggested that mycotoxins could also cause kidney damage.

According to her, some people think that rotten tomatoes which are cheap, can be consumed after washing and heating.

She, however, stressed that the toxins could not be washed or killed by heating “because mycotoxins are heat-resistant.”

She, therefore, advised consumers to keep-off rotten tomatoes often sold cheap in the market, saying “it was better to spend money to prolong life than to use such money to buy death.”

Sen Rabiu Kwankwaso on Monday sneaked into the ancient city of Kano apparently to douse tension over his endorsement of his son-in law, Abba Kabir Yusuf, as the governorship candidate of PDP in the state in the 2019 governorship election.

The Senator who addressed his supporters at his Milla Road residence in Kano metropolis confirmed that he is in support of the emergence of his son in law as the next governor of Kano State.

News Agency reports that the Senator explained that his choice of Abba Kabir Yusuf was necessary because most of the projects he executed during his tenure, including the famous Kano Kofar Nassarawa flyover were designed and executed by Yusuf.

“Today most of the projects being executed by Ganduje are not durable and of low standard while huge amount of money was being spent on them.

“But our projects which mostly were designed and executed by Abba Kabir Yusuf are today standing firm in Kano,” he said.

Kwankwaso, who spent only one hour in Kano, told his supporters who thronged his house that he was willing to sit with them and iron things out.

He promised to return in the next few weeks to resolve some of the issues on the forthcoming elections in 2019.

Crime / Customs Raid Gombe Warehouse, Seize Tramadol, Diazepam Worth N7m by olokeded: 5:00pm On Sep 19, 2018
Joint operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service, Abuja Headquarters and the Federal Operations Unit, Zone D, Bauchi, raided a warehouse in Gombe state and seized drugs worth seven million Naira.

The Comptroller, Federal Operations Unit, Zone D, Peters Olugboyega, disclosed this while handing over the drugs to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, at the Zonal headquarters in Bauchi.

He informed reporters that the command seized 840 packets of Tramadol (120mg) and 4,437 packets of Diazepam valued at N7, 350, 000.

“On Thursday, 13th September, 2018, the operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service Abuja Headquarters Information Patrol left Abuja and invited the Operatives of the Federal Operations Unit, Zone D, Bauchi, to a joint raid on suspected hard drugs being deposited in a store around Tudun Wada area of Gombe state.

“The joint Operatives raided the store and were able to evacuate hard drugs comprising of Tramadol 120mg and Diazepam.”

Olugboyega said that a suspect was arrested during the raid and is in custody.

According to him, the drugs are psychoactive, psycho-pharmaceutical drugs that can affect brain function.

He said that the Diazepam is a medicine of Benzodiazepine family that typically produces a calming effect adding that the tramadol is an opioid pain medication used to treat and relieve severe pain.

“These are controlled drugs, you can imagine the havoc they may cause if drugs of such magnitude find their way into our society.

“Today, the Federal Government is worried about the damaging effects these hard drugs are causing in our society.

“Therefore, the task to salvage the youths and even some adults of this country from the menace of drug peddlers is a collective one and non-negotiable,” he stated.

The Custom Boss said that the drugs are classified under Common External Tariff, Heading 3004 at 0% Duty and no VAT, but must have a permit before importation under the NAFDAC Narcotic Control.

Politics / Ambode Allegedly Insults Tinubu After Phone Conversation by olokeded: 12:59pm On Sep 19, 2018
Akinwunmi Ambode’s frosty relationship with his godfather, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, plunged to lower depths after a phone conversation went awry, top ranking officials in the Lagos APC set-up told Pulse.

These officials preferred not to be quoted for this story because they had not been given permission to comment on the subject.

In 2015, Tinubu pulled out all the stops for Ambode to emerge Governor of Lagos—Nigeria’s most populous city and commercial capital. But the relationship between both men has all but broken down in recent times.

Tinubu is backing 53-year-old former Commissioner, Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu, ahead of the governorship primary election in Lagos, leaving Ambode’s second term bid in peril.
Insults after a phone call that didn't end

One Tinubu loyalist recalls the moment The Jagaban made up his mind not to back Ambode for a second term.

“Ambode usually ends phone calls in a rude fashion. Only recently, he did it again, except that he actually forgot to end the call. He was on the phone with Tinubu and stopped talking abruptly, but forgot to end the call. He was now telling his aides that; ‘what does he (Tinubu) want again?

“Always disturbing me with calls. If he wants money, just give him. Nonsense money monger. If he wants two billion, give him four billion. The agbaya…I will retire him’…and on and on he went.
Ambode: "Who am I to speak after the Jagaban has spoken?" play

“He didn’t know that Tinubu was still listening on the other end of the line. Tinubu immediately put the phone on speaker mode and called us (his aides) to come listen to what the governor was saying. That was the day we all knew Ambode wouldn't be getting Jagaban’s support for a second term”, the source said.

Another Tinubu loyalist corroborated this story. “The governor was apparently in a nite club on the day and probably got carried away”, Pulse was told.
Local government chairmen can't reach Ambode

A handful of local government chairmen in Lagos who craved anonymity for this story told Pulse that they could not see themselves backing a man who refused to share his phone numbers with them.

“None of us (57 local government chairmen) have our governor’s phone number. You can ask him or do your own findings. He refused to share his phone number with us. How can we back a man who doesn’t regard us? We want a governor we can talk to and that’s why we are going with Sanwoolu”, one local government chairman shared.
A police snub felt round the APC

An APC chieftain in Lagos narrated how Ambode snubbed a former Inspector General of Police, Musiliu Smith:

“One of those who could have assisted Ambode is Musiliu Smith, the new Chairman of the Police Service Commission. But Ambode treated him so badly”, said the chieftain.

“The man has been attempting to see the governor for over six months. He has called him more than 200 times, phone rang but no response. One day, Smith called Ambode's ADC and asked him to give the phone to his Oga.

“The ADC pleaded with the retired Inspector General of Police not to allow his career end just like that. He said the governor would sack him instantly if he tried that but he advised Smith to keep on calling the governor, may be one day the governor may decide to pick his call.
Buhari appoints former IGP, Musiliu Smith, as Police Service Commission (PSC) chairman. play

“Smith was shocked. He reported Ambode to President Buhari, then to Femi Okunu. Recently, Smith asked Buhari to steer clear of Lagos politics and allow Lagos APC solve their problem.

“Smith was calling Ambode to warn him of this perceived danger he had seen long before now, so that he can make amends but the governor must have thought that anyone who calls him is a beggar!!!”

Mr. Smith was not immediately available for comments for this story.
Reaching representatives for comments

Pulse has been unable to independently verify these stories, as the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna and Commissioner for Information in Lagos, Kehinde Bamigbetan, weren't immediately available for comments. Calls placed to their mobiles returned unanswered.

Pulse also reached out to Tinubu’s spokesperson, Tunde Rahman, but he didn’t immediately reply to requests for a comment. His phone went unanswered when Pulse called and a text message sent to him hadn’t been replied before this story was published.

However, another aide of Tinubu’s, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, dismissed the Tinubu/Ambode phone call tale as a fabrication.

“No truth at all”, Gbadegesin said of the story in a terse text message.

Tinubu's political structure in Lagos, Mandate Movement, has endorsed Ambode's challenger, Sanwoolu ahead of the governorship primary election.

The 57 local councils in Lagos have also thrown their weight behind Sanwoolu

Politics / Buhari, 87 Other Presidents For UN General Assembly Sept. 25 by olokeded: 8:21am On Sep 19, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari and 87 other Presidents are expected to address the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday, Sept. 25 at the UN headquarters in New York.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Buhari is expected to deliver Nigeria’s National Statement on the date, which is the first day of the general debate of the General Assembly high-level events.

NAN reports that the Nigerian leader was initially placed as the number 20 on the list of the speakers out of the 193 world leaders that would address the Assembly.

However, the revised list obtained by NAN showed that Buhari is now the number 18 on the list of the speakers, now speaking before the leaders of Japan and the United Kingdom.

He would deliver the address to the General Assembly during the afternoon session on the first day between 7.00 p.m. and 8.00 p.m. (between 12 midnight and 1.00 a.m. Nigerian time).

The President of Brazil would be the first world leader to present his address to the 73rd session followed by the U.S. President, Donald Trump, the traditional second speaker, being the host country.

UN Spokesperson, Mr Stephane Dujarric, said the number of participating Heads of State and Heads of Government in 2018 are higher than that of 2017.

“In advance of the plenary session, 88 Heads of State and 45 Heads of Government have confirmed that they will attend this session, which is up from 77 Heads of State and 37 Heads of Government last year.

“Regarding other events, as of today, the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management has received 342 requests for meetings during the high-level week. Compared to the same time last year, 343 requests had been received.

“As of today, the UN has received a total of 741 requests for bilateral meetings amongst Member States.

“This number will increase during the next week. Later in the week, the number of bi-laterals for the Secretary-General will be announced,” the UN spokesperson said.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in his remarks at the opening of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, told the Member States that they would have a busy session ahead of them.

Guterres said that the UN needed action for peacekeeping, financing for the 2030 Agenda, empowerment for the world’s young people, urgent steps to end poverty and conflict, and much else.

The Secretary-General encouraged the Ambassadors to tell their leaders to come to next week’s high-level week ready to be bold, ready to cooperate, and ready to forge solutions.

Politics / IPOB: Banks, Markets Defy Sit-at-home Order In Umuahia by olokeded: 4:32pm On Sep 14, 2018
Commercial banks, markets and business outlets in Umuahia, the Abia capital, opened for business on Friday, defying the sit-at-home order by the Independent People of Biafra.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that the city was initially enveloped by an air of uncertainty in the early hours of the day as residents and commuters kept off the streets.

Business, however, began to pick up at 7.30 a.m., when commercial vehicle operators, banks, markets and business premises began to open for the day’s activities.

As at the time of this report, business activities as well as vehicular movements and motor parks had resumed fully in Umuahia and its environs.

Government offices, public institutions and Automated Teller Machines as well as private outfits were open, while kiosks and roadside businesses went on unhindered.

Meanwhile, a detachment of anti-riot mobile policemen, army, navy and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps was seen moving through major streets and strategic points in the city.

NAN reports that private and public schools, however, did not open as the authorities reportedly advised the students and pupils to stay back home for fear of any violence.

A cross-section of the residents expressed displeasure with the IPOB order, saying that it was capable of instigating uprising against the Federal Government in the South-East.

A civil servant, who identified himself simply as Christian, said that the group’s activities could cause tension in the area.

“What we need are ideas and programmes that will encourage investors to establish their businesses in the South-East and not activities that project the region in bad light.”

A commuter-bus operator, Mr Nnamdi Ogbonna, said that no fewer than 15 soldiers in two Toyota Hilux vans were parked at the Umuahia South Local Government headquarters, when he resumed for the day’s business at about 7 a.m.

Ogbonna cautioned the people to be law-abiding, saying that it would be foolhardy for anybody or group to confront the Federal Government.

Also commenting, a trader, Mrs Nkechi Nnadozie, expressed concern that the pro-Biafra group decided to continue its activities after is proscription by the Federal Government.

Nnadozie said that she was not interested in any activity that would affect her business.

NAN observed that traders freely displayed their wares without any molestation at the Ubani Ultra Modern Market and Isi-Gate both in Umuahia.

The traders said that they were aware of the IPOB order but decided to open for business in order to get their daily bread.

Mr Johnson Onyekwere, a dealer in kitchen utensils, said that although he had sympathy for IPOB, he came to market because he could not afford to idle away his time at home.

“I opened my shop but I did not display all the goods as usual. I don’t like to stay at home. Nobody has come to harass us since we opened this morning,” he said.

Also, Mr Onyekachi Nwankwo, a textile dealer, said he had no reason to stay at home.

According to Nwankwo, only the die-hard supporters of Biafra will observe the order.

“I came to the market as early as 7.30 a.m. and as you can see, I’m displaying my goods.

“Will those who asked me to sit at home put food on my table?” Nwankwo asked.

Similarly, Mrs Chinyere Onwuegbu, a petty trader at Isi-Gate, said she contemplated staying back home but later changed her mind.

“I came to the market by 9.30 a.m., after I learnt that there was movement. We are suffering too much in this country. I pray for a genuine change.

“But if I don’t sell today there won’t be food at home for me and my family. This thing you see me sell is what I use to take care of my children,” she said.

Mr Chijioke Kalu, who sells fairly used wears on the railway line at Isigate, decried last year’s incident in Umuahia, where many innocent people were reportedly killed during a military operation to quell the activities of IPOB.

He expressed the hope that people would not put their lives at risk under the guise of agitating for Biafra.

The situation was, however, different in Aba, the commercial hub of the state, where the order allegedly recorded partial compliance in the early hours of the day.

NAN learnt that while banks remained closed, markets and other business outlets in the city and its environs began to open for business at about midday.

Security operatives were also said to be keeping surveillance in the city to avert a possible breach of public peace in the area.

NAN reports that a combined team of security agencies in the state on Wednesday organised a show-of-force parade in Umuahia to demonstrate their readiness to quell any acts of violence or threat to peace and order.

Meanwhile, the spokesman for the Abia Police Command, Superintendent of Police Geoffrey Ogbonna, told NAN in a telephone interview that the entire state was calm and that residents were going about their lawful duties unmolested.

Ogbonna said that the command had not recorded any breach of the peace, adding that security agencies were on top of the situation in the state.
