Thank you for the superb reply @coolier!!!
Travel / Query re: endorsement of new ePassport with details of an old expired passport by papas: 2:36pm On Aug 05, 2010
When one gets the new passport (ePassport), is it meant to be endorsed with, say, a stamp or an official imprint of the previous passport's number to kind of link up the new passport with the preceeding one?

I gather from comments in some threads that people have had their new passports endorsed with a referral to their old ones, especially if they still have valid visa/visas on the old one (which should be stamped as 'cancelled without prejudice' on issuance of the new one).

In other words, should there be some sort of referral to the old passport (e.g. the old passport's number) on the new passport?

wirinet:

Nigerians would want to farm if it is made attractive. If government invests in agriculture and support agriculture, you will find many people ready to give up white collar jobs and go into farming. Even the Zimbabwean farmers brought in by saraki is heavy supported by the Kwara state government.

In Europe and the US, the government supports farmers with all sorts of instruments like zero interest rates, and even subsidy on farm produce. Here in Nigeria, the government does not support farmers at all and even over tax them both legal and illegal.

The major problem with agriculture in Nigeria is our land use act. If our land laws are clear and direct and people are allowed to have all ownership right to their land, and land documentation is made clear and precise, then it would be easy to use land as an asset to borrow money for agriculture.

We are always saying "if the government does this, if the government does that", do you seriously want the government to completely take over food production in Nigeria?

ThIS IS BAD!!!!!!!!!! They will be exporting 100% Now when Nigerians are ready to farm, our lands has been leased to foreign investors. Wowowow do people even think for a second or they just want investors. at the poster above, do you even know what is going on in Pakistan? People worry about electricity and want unrealistic economy. I can live without electricity but I can't live without food. What is wrong with people? Food first!!!! Electricity can wait till food is surplus. Do people understand the meaning of basic needs?.

Nigerians that want to farm are already farming. Will you happily agree to grow and tend to crops if you were given land for it? Most Nigerians I know will not want to even think of doing this, so don't say "when we want it, it won't be there".
Please present your facts of what is happening in Pakistan with regard to the leasing of land for farming. I have not heard yet.
Politics / Re: Nigeria Offers Farmland To Gulf Investors At $10,000 Per Hectare? by papas: 8:38pm On Mar 31, 2010
Why I strongly believe this is a good thing for Nigeria, taking Pakistan as a case study, the original article says that Pakistan has offered "6 million acres" of land to foreign investors for farming purposes.

Some facts from the CIA factbook, Pakistan vs Nigeria

Pakistan:
1) Land area: around 778 thousand sq. km.
2) Population: over 170 million
3) Arable land: 24.4%

Nigeria

1) Land area: around 910 thousand sq. km.
2) Population: who knows!!! but lets say around 160 million
3) Arable land: 33%,   (World factbook, or wikipedia)

Pakistan seems to be faring well after offering 6 million acres. I see no reason why Nigeria cannot comfortably offer at least 10 million acres for farming to foreign investors. What else can we Immediately offer to foreign investors? Manufacturing services? where is the electricity for that? Financial services? With all that is happening in the banking sector a.t.m.?

Again, if this takes off, I can't emphasise enough how Nigeria will be better for it.

Why not these people enter into some kind of partnership with Nigerian investors on this? I'm highly apprehensive of leasing out HUGE portions of land to foreigners for any reason. "No be to give monkey water be the problem, na to collect the cup back". undecided

In line with Ibime, you would (I hope) agree that the "Nigerian brand" has little or no reputation a.t.m. especially with regard to agricultural produce. I agree with you that there are capable Nigerians (financially) that can undertake these ventures, but anything that brings foreign investment into the economy is a good thing I believe.

We need these kinds of investments, if for nothing else, to facilitate exportation of the agricultural produce (to their countries at least). It will be difficult for Nigeria to presently build the trust required to export agricultural produce (on a large scale) to a place like China, or even the UAE. Especially, given the "very good reputation" we have built for ourselves in many areas.

Bottomline, any investment from overseas is a good thing for Naija. I just hope this would kick off.
Culture / Burials In Different Cultures. by papas: 6:50am On Mar 31, 2010
This writing on the BBC news site about burials in Ghana makes a good read.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/8590680.stm

it has a link to an old piece about relatives burying their dead in coffins that look like beer bottles - to signify a drunk, hammer-like coffins (to reflect trade) and coffins that look like the bible, (well for a "churchous" relative). See link below. Very unusual and somewhat amusing stuff.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/4215923.stm

is there any interesting fact about burials in your culture (or any culture) that you would like to share? Make we gossip about them here,

You could talk about the preferred day for burial, for example, or anything at all,  Feel free to post.

What do you need a custom FW for?

I take it that this is kind of a troll bridge question, anyway, I gather that to keep your baseband at 04.26, (to guarantee future jb), you need to point at a custom made 3.1.2 fw. I take it that you are aware of this or are you not?

Is there a chance that someone has custom made ipsw to share? Or is there a tried and tested source for custom ipsw's? (talking about the "3.1.x" firmware).

TV/Movies / Re: Aroma Ufodike Wins N10m Ultimate Prize In Mtn Who Want's To Be A Millionaire by papas: 12:04am On Sep 12, 2009
I looked at international versions of the show on wikipedia, just to compare how devalued the N10million top prize might make the naira appear. Glad to say that the Nigerian show is not the worse-off in terms of the maximum pay.
The Vietnamese version has a top prize of 120 million dongs, the most recent broadcast of the indonesian show had 3 billion rupiahs, and Turkey had a whopping 500 billion liras as their top prize.
I think these countries should just pay reasonable amounts in dollars or other strong currencies and stop showing off their highly devalued currencies. I mean the Turkish case is almost pathetic you start to wonder what the pay out would be like in Zimbabwe for example (probably in the googols).

Anyway, have a look at wikipedia if you want to have a look at some of the top prizes.

Foreign Affairs / Why Exactly Are Certain Areas Of London Called "little Lagos" by papas: 1:53pm On Aug 11, 2009
Well I came across this recent report on the BBC news page with what seems to be the reporter stating that  -"Little Lagos" was coined in reference to high crime levels in the area called Thamesmead.

I oppose the notion that Lagos is widely associated with high crime levels, such that areas with high levels of crime can then be called 'Little Lagos'.
Lagos done suffer!!!

Sports / Special Quotes By The Special One. by papas: 10:15am On Sep 21, 2007
This is just one of the quotes of Jose Mourinho culled from his last interview as chelsea manager. I find his remarks very interesting and sometimes hilarious. Be free to post any of his quotes on this thread if u've got them.

"It is omelettes and eggs. No eggs, no omelettes. It depends on the quality of the eggs. In the supermarket, you have class one, class two, or class three eggs and some are more expensive than others and some give better omelettes. So when the class one eggs are in Waitrose(a supermarket), and you cannot go there, you have a problem."

-Mourinho commenting before Chelsea's game with Rosenborg where Drogba, Frank Lampard, and Ballack could not be featured.

This guy is funny.
Sports / Re: This Is Just Over The Top. by papas: 9:33pm On Aug 23, 2007
@ ritchboi,

The thing here is that in terms of gross earnings, most of the nba/mlb/nfl/nhl players would earn more than the footballers in Europe. However, a good part of these earnings are from endorsement deals and not the basic pay for playing their games. In terms of basic pay, some of the footballers in Europe earn ridiculous amounts. Not inclusive of bonuses e.g. for scoring goals.
And with the caliber of people jostling to take over some English Premier clubs, and their willingness to pay huge amounts to buy and keep players they want, without any intention of making profits from the clubs, it wouldn't be long before some footballers would be earning as much as £500 000 a week(in BASIC PAY ALONE) which is about $1 000 000 (basic weekly salary)
Sports / This Is Just Over The Top. by papas: 11:58am On Aug 23, 2007
David Beckham's recent move to L.A. Galaxy will see him rake in at least $250 million in both salary and commercial endorsements over the next 5 years, which when broken down over this period, amounts to a weekly pay of about $1 million a week.

Richard Scudamore (English Premier League chief executive) meanwhile has made it clear that he will be delighted when footballers earn £200 000 a week in salary alone. And the truth of the matter is that market forces in the uk are fuelling a very rapid rise towards the first 200 grand a week earner with billionaires from Thailand to the US taking over every premiership club, and being extremely willing to part with millions to get players they want.

The question to ask is "Are we going to see more increases even after the 200 grand a week or will top football executives be forced to introduce a pay limit?"

HAS FOOTBALLERS PAY GONE OVER THE TOP?
Politics / Re: The Cost Of Software, When Will Nigeria Ask For What China Keeps Getting? by papas: 12:19pm On Aug 17, 2007
The thing here is that, the Chinese are well capable of producing programmes and software that would compete evenly with any of the programmes that Microsoft would produce.
In fact the Chinese variations of such product may even outcompete that of microsoft. So for microsoft to even stand a chance of selling in the chinese market, they have to make the price much less than it is elsewhere in the world.

Even in the Yoruba beliefs, there are Iwin, Oro etc[mystical beings who lives in the trees, rocks etc] If Iwin or Oro can live inside trees or inside rocks, which kind of scientific explanation can one use for this.

Travel / Re: What Did You First Experience In The US? by papas: 4:50pm On Jun 12, 2007
My most vivid experience goes like this,

On the day I was to fly to the uk, I made sure I ate a kingsized plate of garri and okazi soup, since it may be my last garri for a long time. The flight I used was a virgin flight, and we were served all sorts of burgers, tea, and desserts and I just couldn't reject them, as I had paid a lot for the ticket from ph to london.

Two hours into the flight, I started sweating profusely, as my stomach was rumbling real bad. In short it was like the third world war was taking place in my stomach. One fine girl even invited me to chat with her but I said no to avoid embarassing myself. I was so pressed that I felt sick and the thought of using the toilet on the plane was out of the question because I knew the kind of bombs I would release.

So I waited until the plane landed at Gatwick airport, rushed to be among the first five to exit the plane, and as soon as we made it out of the tunnel headed straight for the toilet.(Thank God say oyibo get tissue for all their toilet). What happened next is not to be mentioned here. But I pity the people who cleaned the toilet that day.

Phew.
