Igbos Didn't Vote For Abiola: Separating Facts From Calumny by Igboid: 3:43pm On Dec 11, 2021 |
Often do we hear Yorubas parrot the line that Igbos didn't vote for Abiola in the ill-fated 1993 presidential Election. As is often the case, lies when repeated often enough start taking the veneer of the truth. For this reason was this thread birthed, with the sole aim to separate facts from fictions, truth from calumny and to set the record straight! The 1993 presidential election was between Tofa of NRC and Abiola of SDP , Tofa had an Igbo from present Abia state named Ugoh Sylvester as the VP, while Abiola had a Northerner from Kanuri tribe of Borno named Knigbe Baba Gana as the VP. The SE at this point in history had 4 states of Abia, Anambra, Enugu and Imo, Ebonyi was not in existence then. And below is the statistical analysis of how Igbos voted. State. Abiola. Tofa Abia 105,273 151,227 Anambra 212,024 159,258 Enugu 263,101 284,050 Imo 159,350 195,836 Total. 739,748 790,371 % Vote 48.35%. 51.65% From the stats above. Abiola got 48.35% of the total votes for a presidential election where an Igbo was a VP to a major candidate! Abiola even won Anambra state outrightly, and in Abia where the VP to Tofa was from, he got over 40% of the votes casted. 16 Likes 1 Share

Another fact to be noted is that Tofa was not actually a Fulani, he was from Borno, from Kanuri tribe, likewise Abiola VP Kinigbe Baba Gana. They were both Kanuri men. So this whole Agenda of Yorubas where they claim that Igbos chose a Fulani in 1993 presidential elections is not true as Tofa was a Kanuri, and as you can see, despite Abiola rumoured sneer against Igbos where it was rumoured that he said he could do without Igbos, Abiola still got 48.35% of the votes casted in SE, in an election an Igbo son in Ugoh Sylvester was a VP to a major candidate in Tofa. If anything Ndiigbo showed Political maturity in 1993 and Yorubas should be grateful for that. And not attempt to twist facts decades later. Ndiigbo will fully appreciate it that Yorubas treat an Igbo presidential candidate or VP candidate the way Ndiigbo treat Abiola by giving such a candidate 48.35% of total amount of votes that would be cast in SW when the time comes, and atleast let such Igbo man win one vital SW state, for example Ogun, like Abiola won Anambra! 25 Likes 1 Share |

Can Yorubas show us a presidential election, where they gave an Igbo presidential candidate or VP , 48% of the elections casted in SW while ignoring a Yoruba VP or president involved in same election? For emphasis. Zik was a presidential candidate in 1979 and 1983 And Ekwueme was the VP to Shagari in 1979 and 1983! How many percentage of votes did Yorubas give these Igbo men? Chuba Okadigbo was the VP to Buhari in 2003 and Ume-Ezeoka was Buhari VP in 2007! How many percentage of votes did SW give these two Igbos? How can Yorubas accuse Ndiigbo of things they are guilty of. They cry that our 48% given to Abiola was too small, but they have never given an Igbo VP or presidential candidate up to 15% of votes cast in SW! Isn't this hypocrisy! 34 Likes 3 Shares |

Some misinformation have been peddled online for far too much by some mischief makers from the SW. It was on record that Abiola SDP got massive vote from the 4 SE States of Anambra, Enugu, Abia and IMO in the 1993 general elections. In 1993 the Igbo's threw tribalism to the dust and voted with their conscience despite their own brother as VP running mate to Tofa's NRC. Dr Sylvester Ugo as running mate to Bashir Tofa wasn't enough to deny Abiola the votes from the SE. It was on record that Abiola won Anambra state and still garnered over 40% of votes in other SE states as Abia, Enugu and Imo. Below are graphical representation of the votes and how each States voted. The aim is to dispel the historical distortions spread by some propagandist from the SW and for posterity sake here on Nairaland. The Igbo have stood behind Southern alliance in time past from voting Abiola, Obasanjo and GEJ. They've also voted northerners even against their own Yet, some mischief makers still want to deny the Igbo's such gestures from their part. The Igbo's have voted Yoruba candidate, the onus lies on the SW to show us when since 1960 they've stood behind an Igbo candidate. Those who come to equity must come with clean hands. 20 Likes 1 Share |

Please check out the voting statistics. Despite having an Igbo in NRC as running mate to Tofa, Igbo still gave Abiola a chunk of large votes. 9 Likes

OP, what exactly is your point? Abiola lost in 3 out of the 4 SE states so what are you trying to say? In a contest between a very well educated, popular and philanthropist from the south and a relatively unknown politician from the north, we expect all southern states to deliver nothing less than 80% of the total vote cast to the southern candidate. You voted against MKO out of hatred and jealousy for the Yoruba race. Own your shit and stop looking for excuses all over the place. 36 Likes 5 Shares |

seunmsg: You guys are just pure evil. All these years you all have been spinning the propaganda that Igbos didn’t vote for Abiola. Only to find out that he almost got 50% of the Igbo vote despite the inflammatory statement that he made about igbos. Igbos also voted for obasanjo despite his role in the civil war. You guys are just evil. Let’s call it what it is. 22 Likes 4 Shares |

horsepower102: Spinning tales and calling us evil won’t change the truth. MKO lost in 3 out of the 4 Igbo states. Now, let’s imagine an election between Okonjo Iweala and Aminu Masari. How will you feel if Masari wins in 5 out of the 6 south west states? Crazy right? Yeah, that was exactly what happened in 1993. To understand how silly the decision of you Igbos to vote against MKO was, Kano, the home state of Tofa voted massively for MKO. I mean, over 60% of Kano voters voted for MKO while he couldn’t get 50% in the south east. It is indefensible. It was the height of southern betrayal and we shall never forget. 25 Likes 2 Shares |

princdebola201: Moving the goal post. But you guys have been saying Igbos didn’t support Abiola despite the fact that he got almost 50% of the votes. Imagine if he didn’t say that he didn’t need igbo votes to win. Maybe he could have actually won in the east. Yorubas. This people can make the devil look like an apprentice. 6 Likes |

Abiola won all the states in the South except Iboland and Rivers. Igboid argument is that they voted a Fulani man because he chose an Igbo Vice BUT the same Yeebos have been abusing the Yorubas as betrayal of the south for voting Buhari against Jonathan in 2015 while forgetting the fact that he also chose a Yoruba Vice. Igbos will always play second fiddle to the Fulanis, that is their history. Since 1959, that is their story and it’s not changing anytime soon. By 2023, they will all Atikulate while Obi Pandora play the Vice to suck Atiku cum. Azikiwe did it, Ekwueme did it, Ugoh did it, and Peter Pandora will not be an exception. 17 Likes

horsepower102:Abiola lost in the SE that is the botomline . Did he win ? YES OR NO There were only two candidates with ONE WINNER . He lost to a person whose name no one heard before or after the election. He was unknown The only sensible explanation is that Igbos have ALWAYS been of the position that they will vote ANYONE but Yoruba Stop pretending this is new or anything to do with 2015 election CHECK OUT https://www.nairaland.com/745731/yoruba-marginalization-elders-met-jonathan The point is this no one is interested in making anything of it ordinarily . No one called it a betrayal .We acknowledge your right to vote whom you choose The reason this is coming up is when you start accusing Yoruba of betrayal as if we have any bonds from anywhere Stay on your lane and let us stay on ours Abiola wone without you and we do not need you Just stop this narrative of "betrayal" THAT IS THE POINT 19 Likes |

Tinubuadvocate:I don’t understand the purpose of debunking something and yet confirming it. Almost never counts in politics. He lost 3 out of 4 SE state to a northerner. That’s the only valid fact here. You guys should rest and stop saying someone voted Buhari in 2015 because going by the assertion that birthed this thread. Buhari had a Yoruba VP so it’s only fair Yoruba voted because of Osinbanjo if you guys want to claim y’all voted because of Tafa VP. That should end the discussion of whether Igbo felt betrayed because Yoruba didn’t vote an Ijaw man in 2015. Because the SS people have never and are still not complaining. You people should go and kneel down abeg. 9 Likes 1 Share |

seunmsg: So Abiola won in one Igbo state. Tell us which Yoruba state voted for Tofa/Sylvester Ugoh. None This really shows the wickedness of the Yorubas towards the Igbos. First of all, Igbos gave Abiola one state, and gave the Kanuri/Igbo team, the other states, and Yorubas didn't see it fit to return the compliment and also vote for the Kanuri/Igbo team, and at least give them one state 18 Likes 1 Share |

LegendHero: Show us where you ever gave an Igbo presidential or VP candidate 48% of votes! Just once in your history! You can't expect from others what you never offered them. We await! And by the way, Tofa was from Borno state, he was a Kanuri man, Abiola and Yorubas had no problem voting a Kanuri VP in Kinigbe Baba Gana! But Igbos voting a Kanuri president in Tofa should be an abomination? 16 Likes 1 Share |
