I experienced this last year.
Lost my Redmi Note 9S (New phone that I bought in February sad) April and in September or thereabout, someone reached out claiming to be in Benin Republic.
That I should help him with the password. I asked him to return the phone that I'll pay him and he declined.

I forgot about the whole thing.
Imagine!
Don’t be surprised that the lowlife is somewhere in computer village Ikeja claiming to be in Benin Republic.

according to the guy with the phone now,it was unlocked but he reset it after he bought it not knowing it was locked and the people he bought it from had unlocked it
It’s just like iPhones locked to a network
If you reset it,the phone would be locked again and it would cost alot to unlock it

He made the mistake of resetting it not knowing it was locked before and he probably can’t afford to unlock it or even know how to go about it

That’s if he isn’t the thief though or knows the theft and was just an innocent guy duped in the market
That not true, I’m sure they must have flashed the phone one or two things before. What happened is that the phone sold without sim but after connecting to network or internet, the phone locked again and requested for the owner Mi accounts locking code. I guess this what happened why I contacted me to get the code

D thing secured die, they flashed it and the phone is still locked. Now the Niger guy is begging me to give him the code? Should I give him or tell him to return to the seller?

This guy might be in Kano, sokkoto or katsina. If he is really from Niger republic, he could have spoken to you in french not English. Tell him to send back your device or he should return it to the market.

NB: I'm near Cameroon and I have Cameroon number (Orange) so I might just activate WhatsApp with that number and claim to be from Cameroon.

Bros don't give him any code. Think about your details and biodata on the phone. You have no idea who he is.

He may be a thief, terrorist, kidnapper, honest or otherwise.

Don't even collect any token. Let him send the phone back because you have your data on it.

Dont be too trusting, humans are generally wicked

I hope You know your code will unlock the phone and not wipe it. Use your head

Op let me explain something to you

The phone can still be used even if you don’t send the code

What he need is to bypass the mi account

The people that sold it to him bypassed the mi account and he went home and reseted the phone

It went back to the real owners account

I bypass iCloud on iPhones but if you flash it again, the real account will show up again but you can still re bypass it

It’s just money

Make una no de happy say MI account strong like that

Oppo own na him hard pass

This morning I received from Niger “ hi you lost your phone redmi note 7 and i found it i'm in niger “. I was surprised when I saw the message. Though I couldn’t remember the precise date they stole this Redmi Xiaomi in my room at night, when I woke up I couldn’t find my phone again, I try to call it but it was switched off. Then I realized my phone has been stolen. I went to Ikorodu police station to report the case, the outrageous amount they charged, made me decision to leave the phone. Instead of paying 40k to track the phone which I have no grantee of getting back. I went back home very sad. As I was thinking about the stolen phone, my friend came to check me, then I collected his phone and log in to my mi account. I locked everything lockable from the mi account. Since the year 2020 I didn’t hear anything until this morning, apparently I have even forget the phone cus I got a big phone after waiting 5 months. I was so surprised when the guy chat me and also send me the phone picture. The reason why I post this is that if you’re using Redmi xiaomi phone always make sure you activate the mi account. D thing secured die, they flashed it and the phone is still locked. Now the Niger guy is begging me to give him the code? Should I give him or tell him to return to the seller?

Don't be naive. The idio*t is in Nigeria. He used a foreign number to contact you so you'd believe he's actually overseas, whereas, he's actually in your backyard. They are apps you can use to create fake foreign numbers.

.
.
He's the criminal that stole from you. The effontery though. Don't give him anything. He should either pay for it or return it. Imagine buying a locked phone, wouldn't you return it immediately to whence you bought it from? Think about it bro.

Bro, don’t give out that code for all you know it’s the same person who stole your phone that played a waiting game.oh so because it displays a Niger number on whatsapp you believe this person is actually in Niger yeah? You can have any whatsapp number from any country with very little effort. I don’t believe this for a minute this person’s English is Nigerian like and Niger is a Francophone country. What are the odds? Na person wey thief your phone dey chat you so, believe it.

Just give the guy the code after billing him what he can pay as compensation to you and his punishment for not doing due diligence on a purchase.
How sure the person is not the one that stole the phone?

It's not marketing strategy. If u have an issue against MI phones voice it out, rather than this attempt to waterdown the guy's story. The account was bypassed b4 it was sold but according to the chat the buyer reset the phone which if u are actually tech savvy, you will know that the phone will revert back to the MI account. He proably doesn't want to pay another fee for bypassing that account again, the reason for reaching out to the op. U claiming to know how to remove the account permanently is a different case entirely.

Dude! You should’ve asked the dude to take a pic of his environment to prove he’s actually in Niger. I’m not wicked but you shouldn’t unlock that device. Tell the guy you can’t find the code or unlock it.
