sorry that was a mistake. I meant hydrogen peroxide
Were you deaf, I mean was your ear blocked to the extent you could'nt hear with it before using the said liquid? How much is it sold and how do one use it? I'm currently having hearing problem on both ears to the entent i cant hear. Though, mine was due to drugs i was given when i was sick, so i learnt from research i did. But, now i am begginning to think it was cause by wax. Whenever i have ear problem, my mom use to warm palm oil and put it in my ear and within some hours the pain is gone. i am thinking maybe those palm oil have turned to wax and blocked my ear canal.

my worry is this: the idea of 'clinic days' as practiced in government hospitals across the country, is it a global standard practice?? I ask because I feel it is not right! Early January this year, I had an accident that affected my right foot. I couldn't walk and was in great pains...I was to see a consultant but was told to 'wait till Monday as Monday was the clinic day for orthopaedic cases'....to add to the absurdity, when Monday came, I was informed that the consultant only sees 3 new cases each Monday!! It sounded so pathetic and ridiculous!!
It's a global practice.
Aside clinic, they have ward rounds for admitted patients, surgeries, academic activities and other engagements too. Those other engagements have their own days.

If it's an emergency, you go to the Emergency department or A&E. If it's not an emergency, you wait till your appointment date. It's the global standard and people can wait for months to get seen even abroad.

Internal bleeding is not "just". It's much more difficult to diagnose and treat than external bleeding which you can see.

Sorry to hear that. I have been experienced wax accumulation multiple time. My advice is try to see the consultant next week. He/she will prescribe something to soften the wax before your ears will be syringed. After wax is removed, you can dip cotton wool in baby or olive oil and plug into your ears once in a week before you go to bed. My ears were syringed about twice within a year in Naija before I left Naija. Shortly after I got to obodo oyibo, ears were blocked again and the GP (not an ENT specialist) advised me to apply olive or baby oil. For over 5 years, my ears have not been blocked.

Don't use cotton buds or anything to remove wax. Don't try hydrogen peroxide like someone suggested. That's what a patent medicine store attendant suggested but it didn't work. I went to staff clinic and the doctor said it was otitis major or something and referred me to an ENT specialist. The ENT specialist asked me to discard what the previous doctor said.

What is it that the Experts are saying about “using cotton buds to remove the wax inside the ear”?? What are their exact reasons for saying such.??

In my opinion,if its an emergency i believe the hospital has an Accident and emergency that has Drs and nurses on call 24 hrs,u can as well walk in there and get ursef admitted since u cant wait.

U got referred to see a consultant and expect to walk into the hospital at anytime of the day to see him or her seated and waiting for u,and ur opening ur mouth to rant rubbish. Can u walk into a business establishment or bank and demand to see the bank manager anytime as u please?.Even in advanced countries, specialist clinics are booked ahead of time.My aunt had a dental appointment with the specialist in US,and was told to come back at a certain day and time,if she had missed it,She would have had to reschedule for another day and time.Thats worldwide standard practice.
If u were abroad shebi u will just quietly go back and return as at when instructed, rather than coming here to trash talk the medical practice,There is scarcity of Drs and nurses nationwide because of massexodus to greener pastures and the few remaining are trying to meet up with the crowd ,hence the sharing of clinic days in hospitals. So because they are medics let them die inside hospital and they shouldnt have a life outside work. ..Thats y many of health workers are leaving to saner climes, not this master-slave mentality most Nigerians have.

Sorry for your experience bro.

While you are waiting for Monday try and get cerumol and start applying it. This will soften up the wax so it will be easy to flush out. You will be asked to get green canula and normal saline. I dont know why your company doctor did not do this.

So sorry about your experience. The usual thing is to go to the emergency ward where you would be attended to by the orthopaedic team on call. If the residents can't immediately sort you out, they'd contact the unit consultant. Once your immediate symptoms are resolved, you'd now be referred to the outpatient clinic for definitive management.

If your case requires an admission, after stabilization, you'd be transferred to the ward from the A&E. If this happens, you'd be seen during the next consultant ward rounds.

Clinics don't run minus GOPD. I am not familiar with the practice in the west but I doubt you'd make a different finding there.

Hope you're OK now though.

thanks for your apt explanation. I understand better now....and thank God, I'm almost completely healed. Thanks for asking.

Thank you sis.
It's been a while... I believe you're good.
There's a simple trick to help open your ears.

Inhale alot of air, then hold your mouth and nose tightly... Hold on as long as you can and don't let go of your mouth or nose... Try forcing {exhale) the air out while your mouth and nose is still tightly closed...by this time you've deprived your brain oxygen, Your brain will trigger your ears to open in an attempt to let the air you locked out.

It works for me

Sorry please.

Kpele, sogbo!

I know how it is.

The consultants in FTH Gombe are scarcely available at the government facility, most of them have got private facilities where they operate...

Gombe being northern state with Muslims domination, Fridays are like ' unofficial ' days as the Muslims either don't go to work or work half day.

Here's what to do:

Either trace the private hospitals of the consultant you needed or

Wait till Monday. Even Monday, you aren't certain of having access to that consultant.

Chat me privately, I will guide you to Haven private ear, eye and mouth clinic in Federal Low-cost and about 3 kilometers from the FTH

Sir, in every profession, there are bad eggs. What's your field of endeavour? I'm sure you know we can find bad eggs there too?

I agree, some health workers are sometimes rude to patients. They try to blame the workload for this, but I don't agree. During my paediatrics and O and G postings, we had very terrible workloads. Antenatal clinics in government hospitals are almost always overwhelming. Everyone is stressed - the porters, the nurses, the doctors, etc. But honestly, this isn't a reason to treat patients harshly. I have never (and God willing, will never) treated anyone disrespectfully.

Just like other sectors, the health system needs a total overhauling. Some cases shouldn't get to tertiary hospitals. We have primary and secondary facilities. More hands must be brought on deck. The pay too must be significantly increased.

Please if you have a legitimate complain, you can approach the unit head or the hospital management to report the case. You can also use Servicom.

I hope this helps.

your mum putting palm oil in your ear is very wrong. Mine I couldn’t hear well with one ear with very serious pains. I applied ear drop first (apply on both ears) , take 1 tablet of ampliclox morning and night , them apply the hydrogen peroxide once daily to clean up the wax. Note when you put in the hydrogen peroxide keep your ear in a position for about 5 minutes so the liquid won’t pour out, Wipe after. You’ll be fine

Clinic days are the days you fins doctors on seat. You should ask what their clinic days are.

In my opinion, clinic days should be stopped. Instead, more doctors should be hired with good and encouraging compensation. Then a roster will be made. Doctors should be available on a daily basis.

Meanwhile, OP, you said you did not clean your ear for so long while the wax built up. When the wax was building in your ear and it was itching you, how did you cope?
Truth is nobody wants to work in that shithole. Hard work is seen as suffering. No amount of compensation will make them work. That is a fact. If you like pay them 1m an hour and attach athem with a bentley and chauffeur nothing will change. Instead they will spend time telling you how they are big boys and you need to worship them. A man who wont work for 5k will not work for 5m

Impacted wax is not a case meant for referral, I wonder why your doctor did not do the right thing. all you need to do is get cerumol oil ear drop, apply for like three days in both ears to soften the wax, then go to the hospital where even the nurses can do syringing with warm normal saline that is all. consultants have clinic days for outpatient all over the world, you can not bring a referral and expect to be attended to same day. Even in UK it may take you a month to see a consultant in outpatient setting. If it is a case that needs urgent attention it is the Emergency unit such person is taken to and the appropriate medical specialty team called for after examination. That is how it operates globally.
