Yea, make fun

But the harsh truth is if we kept subsidy, we would have reached a point where it would have eaten our revenue, some of the borrowed money we have...leaving a deficit in next year's busget

Which would be funded by loans.

Plus, we are using 70% of our budget for loan service.

When it comes to this matter, we have two choices. We can keep subsidy, and run into serious problem in two years, or we can remove subsidy, suffer some hardship, but at least have things like more investment, more jobs, and some price reduction.

Yes, I hate high prices, but the alternative frightens me, a lot. Too too much.

I did not support GEJ, but I wish ,and back then I supported his subsidy removal in 2012. If he had not listened to Nigerians, by now we would have long since been over the worst.

Yes, keep the subsidy...till our deficit is larger than our revenue. And if you think we are suffering now, and we are, we would be in ten times worse state then.
Anywhere this monkey hear subsidy he just jumps in and starts talking rubbish.
Is that your department at BatMC?

Subsidy is not an issue . Corruption is . Whatever is saved or generated will still be stolen . In fact the rate of corruption ,armed robbery , rituals and metal health wahala will increase to the maximum . We are in trouble . I doubt Tinubu will be able handle what is to come

It is because of that inflation and lying that I do not support subsidy.

Subsidy encourages such price inflations, lyings and makes stealing easy. At some point, it had to end.
Continue with your tomfoolery.

Well, whatever you think of me, keeping subsidy would have created a very large deficit that the IMF won't have helped us fill this time.

The thing is, we should have voted for a government that would have gotten us off oil in 1999. Maybe we won;t have been here.

What created that deficit is actually poor leadership and corruption.... But since we can't solve them let's remove subsidy... Low hanging fruit. The problem is that the removal won't still solve our problems.... Watchout, 4yrs into this government and see if you would notice any impact. If make more funds available for the government, they will simply steal more.

Removing subsidy is not meant to solve our problems, dear lad.

What it is meant to do is to make our petroleum sector run profitably, which may benefit our economy, and provide some jobs

But if we want a better economy, we have to diversify away from oil and become an exporter of manufactured goods.

And if you cannot hold your government to account, why complain when they steal? Laziness doesn't achieve much.

Congratulations Nigerians, you got what you voted for. If fuel does not hit a thousand per liter before December, know it's not Tinubu that is your President. For those of you who allowed religion or ethnicity to dictate whom you voted for in the last election, I hope there is a place where fuel is sold cheaper for people of your religion and ethnicity.

There are no refineries because we were using refinery maintenance money for subsides, and because refineries are not profitable under subsidy, and because subsides provide an environment where it is easier to sabotage and steal money from refineries than to keep them running well.

Gowon built no refineries...(he had two when he took over, the new Port and the Kaduna one were built after he left office).

The only countries that can run subsidy the way we do are countries with populations less than 20 million or Saudi...which produces nearly 10 times as much crude as we do, and has 40 million people.

you see how stupid you are? But the had about 9billion dollars to give dangote to build his refinery, abi? Shey you see say you no get sense?

I agree with this, but then again, it does cost money to refine that crude into fuel and to even drill for it.

And as costs rise, so does the cost of subsidising it

And since we don't have much income from tax to pay for subsidies, and we use oil money for practically everything....at the end of the day, we end up with deficits in keeping subsides.

I did not support GEJ, but he woke me up in 2012. I have remained woken up since then....even more so now that we have access to the data he and his gang were seeing that scared them into trying to remove subsidies then.

We (Nigrrians) are not against Petrol subsidy removal having done so with Kerosene and Diesel.
According to President Tinubu in 2012, he said and I quote "The removal of Fuel subsidy should be done in phases" unquote. Tinubu was right in 2012 but got it wrong in 2023.

The mechanism should be put in place for the effective deregulation of petroleum products and the public should be carried along.

The election was meant to elect the "government of the people" and not the "people of the government ". If it doesn't serve the people no matter how good the intentions are, scrap the policy until the benefits outweigh the sufferings. We should also know that government sharing cash is not a solution nor is it a form of palliative. Better share Indomie and Rice than share money.

Removal of the subsidy is a task that must be done but we have different approaches that can achieve a sane result with human face.

what many BATstards don't know if that fuel price must be equal to our dollar exchange rate. that means a litre will soon get to 800.

Also, we did removal of subsidy in phases in the past many times. And....it was always met with complaints and with anger and with protests.

Remember what happened when we removed subsidy partially in 2012, 15, 17 19 and 2022? Or even in times past?

Anyway, right now, when we are using 75% of our oil revenue to pay for debts....it isn't possible even partially.

God knows I wish it was other wise.

No, it was in 2012, when we had revenues from oil at a high rate and enough savings....which we could not grow because you guys insisted on subsidy remaining.

2012 was the best time, because we would have had actual savings from subsidy, and at the end of the day, we would have grown the economy well, and survived the comming lean years.

Your party made a mistake in 2012. They are taking a decision now because the mistake they made in 2012 means we have too high a debt to keep subsides running now.

Thanks for all your commentary. You're making sense. Nigerians are majorly influenced by TRIBAL loyalty, which is a normal human instinct. It becomes problematic when FACT and LOGIC are discounted.

The retention of fuel subsidy in 2012 and the subsequent election victory of APC in 2015 destroyed the Nigerian economy. Like a fool said, elections have consequences.

President Tinubu contributed to the circumstances that have forced him to do the right thing. It's sad that he's putting other socialist policies in place that will make the economy worse.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

Who told you our petroleum sector does not run profitably? NNPC declared a profit of over 20bn in 2022.
You just keep changing position and shifting gears because you know the crux of your argument is empty. I thought removal of subsidy will bring investment into the sector and create jobs.

Truth be told, if it was Peter Obi in charge, and Obi was the one that removed subsidy, I won't be bashing him...at all.

If we kept subsidy, yes we will enjoy subsidy , until it's cost rises beyond our entire revenue....then we would be at Sri Lanka levels...no money to spend or even loot.

And IMF would be looking at us one kind....

Modifed

To all those calling me government supporter and abusing me, the truth is, I really DO NOT WANT SUBSIDES TO GO.

But the thing is, since 2012, when my eyes got opened, the cost of subsidy has always been too expensive. It is always the cost, always has been the cost

You keep on dishing out these same rubbish lines even when it's obvious the policy is only there to punish Nigerians.
It's inhumane and utmost wickedness to remove the only benefit the average Nigerian was getting from the government, while the politicians keep theirs.

Petrol subsidy wasn't the thing holding the economy back, it's corruption. And that corruption is still there.
Leave subsidy alone and tackle the corruption, and save more money.
Now, where are the billions of naira presumed to have been saved after the removal??
If you're saving money, why borrowing again for palliatives?

This is a stupid policy that will never bring any economic benefit to Nigerians.
