It will be very hard and uneventful for agbadorians to understand the deep shit they are in; for the benefit of double doubt, 97.0962% of them only know about prepaid meter as that box that blinks light on the wall of a sane nigerian citizens apartment.

The meter update, or token identifier (TID) rollover as it is known, is necessary due to a Y2K-style date rollover issue baked into the code of the meters.

When prepaid meters were being designed, the decision was made to attach a section of the 20-digit number that users enter into their prepaid electricity meters to the minute that the token was bought.

This is one way that the tokens are made unique, which is essential as two users cannot be given the same electricity credit token to enter into their meters. This is a functional system, but there is a catch.

There were only so many minutes that could be attached to a token before the number that users entered into their meters became too long. This means that all of the STS-compliant prepaid electricity meters that have been rolled out since 1 January 1993, when prepaid electricity meters began operating, came with a built-in expiry date.

There are a total of 224 minutes that can be attached to a token. That is equal to over 16 million minutes, a little over 279 thousand hours, 11 650 days, or 31.89 years.
Counting that forward from 1 January 1993 gets you to 24 November 2024. After this date, prepaid electricity meters will no longer be able to accept new electricity credit tokens as there will no longer be any new minutes that the token can be attached to.

If the prepaid meters are to remain functional beyond this date, they need to be updated

Concocted Nonsense & Gibberish to deceive the Gullibles.

Time still dey.

NERC should also tell us in plain English the real purpose of the upgrade. That would allay the fears of subscribers.

Lack of proper communication is the reason for all these suspicions. It's not enough to just tell us your are upgrading. For what reason?

You just spoke my mind.
Same reason I took pains to go through the whole bunch of information hoping to read one clear purpose of the upgrade. Yet I found none. Monkey business.

Growing grey hairs because of this news.

I hope these bad guys won't start changing the breakers in peoples' meters. They will change and put a fake one or loop the cables.

An original breaker as heard goes for more than 10k now. There should be vigilance if at all they are to do on-site upgrades. I am however not comfortable with on-site upgrades, Nigerians can ordinarily turn a lofty initiate to steal with impunity..

Upgrade should be remote abeg.

First, Nigerians don't trust Govt again because of several betrayals in the past eg case of INEC & electronic transmission.

Second, the actual meter upgrade may not take more than 5mins, but NEPA will remove your meter, put you on high estimated bill, then spend months before returning your meter.

Third, after the upgrade, no guarantee that meter will not start billing you higher.

No guarantee at all. Believe you me, this so called upgrade is to the detriment of consumers.....new meters I learnt are internet enabled, they can remotely increase anything...trust not these maps or distribution companies.

The upgrade is meant to enhance the security of your meter and longevity of the vending system.

The question is why change a working meter when there are so many buildings without prepaid meters at all.

You can reach out to your disco for assistance. The update is an easy process. A number is given and you input it same way you recharge your metre. The metre is not physically touched for the update to happen.

Prepaid metres that use smartcard won't be affected by this.

Do what needs to be done but k!ll that initial nonsense about physically removing the prepaid meters to upgrade them then placing the consumer on estimated billing.

That is unacceptable despite some miscreants blindly supporting such action.

If the metres must be manually upgraded, then they should be done at the residence & immediately reinstalled.

If replacement is required, bring the replacement & fix it immediately.

Exactly, mine is one of those first set of prepaid metre which was fully paid for via compulsory initial deposit & followed by subsequent deductions when I recharged to cover the metre cost. Why should the govt now remove my property in whatever name. If there were any element of sincerity, they should act as you have rightly suggested. They have refused metering some residents because of the estimated billing fraud they enjoy. No sane person would truth the govt at least not with the bad reputation they have kept over the years, which keep getting worse by every govt that come on board.

It doesn't. As long as you don't increase your energy consumption in terms of loads and use time, you are good. I did mine like two weeks ago

Most of you just talk out of pure ignorance.

Just go to your disco office with your metre number and it will be upgraded for you.
