Inspector-General Orders Police Officers To Tender Retirement Letters After Exceeding Statutory Age, Service

SaharaReporters obtained the police signal from the IGP office on Saturday which said a “disturbing trend” that policemen who have attained 60 years of age or 35 years in service refused to quit.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered police formations and commands to extract a letter of retirement from police officers who are due for retirement but have refused to leave the service.

SaharaReporters obtained the police signal from the IGP office on Saturday which said a “disturbing trend” that policemen who have attained 60 years of age or 35 years in service refused to quit.

“Cooperation with other govt bodies x in compliance with the directive of the honourable chairman, Police service commission, the IGP directs you draw the attention of all members of the force to the emerging and disturbing trend in the Nigeria Police Force wherein officers upon attainment of 35 years in service or 60 years of age refuse to proceed on retirement.

“This is contrary to the provisions of the public service rule (PSR) 020810 i & ii which provides that the mandatory retirement age for all grades in the service shall be 60 years or 35 years of pensionable service no officer shall be allowed to remain in service after attaining the retirement of 60 years or 35 years of pensionable service whichever is earlier all actions taken by the said officers for the nigeria police are null and void as a result of expiration of service duration accordingly you are to immediately extract a letter of voluntary retirement from such officers,” the signal said.

“The police authorities need to publish all officers that have violated their service retirement age,” a source in the IGP office noted.

Is it that police does not have a data bank for their staff?
Every police officer due for retirement suppose to have been given retirement notice three months ago to proceed on terminal leave. Which one is writing of retirement letter again?

Honestly, i feel like if we require politicians to be university graduates before they apply for any governmental office, we also need to make sure the people voting for them too also have to have at least a WAEC cert, because an illiterate/ignorant majority is more dangerous than.......

Why do these public servants not look forward to their retirements as if it's a call to suffer? Perhaps the uncertainty around their pensions plays a role too.

I still wonder why they ask civil servants to retire at about 65yrs yet allow people over 70yrs to vie for political offices. This has to stop.
Everyone should retire at about 65yrs to give room for younger ones. If at 65 you are no longer fit to work as a civil servant, you shouldn't be fit enough to work as a governor or senator or president.

Why would people want to continue working when they have approached the statutory retirement age?

The answer is that everyone is scared that you won't get your retirement benefits. Income shuts down. Except if you are steal (pun intended) on the table.

My late mother retired from Kwara State Education Board in 2014 after 30 solid years, she passed in 2016 and up till today, her retirement benefits have never been paid.

Anyone that has hope in Nigeria getting better should be studied as a University degree.

Imagine the kind of circular an IGP is releasing.

They should retire or you direct them to proceed on terminal leave

most of them will be retiring with less than 50k in their accounts. The same mofos that don't think twice when they're asked to open fire at peaceful protesters who are protesting a better welfare for them.

I don't pity any legally armed man. They're fools with guns

Must they be compelled? Retirement should be automatic whenever they attain their service year but they have to be completed cos no functioning system

Exactly. It's odd to be hearing that officers are staying beyond the statutory length of service when its the organisation's duty to keep track of these things.

Northern Nigeria is the resting place of abject poverty, but the people prefer to always channel their energy to meaningless struggles.
They are protesting for Palestine in Kaduna amidst the insecurity they are facing.
Police are running away from the scene, but if it was in the South, they will k!ll the protesters and go away with Their Bodys

What the heck? What is IGP ordering them for, isn't that supposed to be automatic? As far as I know, NPF is on IPPIS and as such once retirement age is attained by whatever means, the staff in question shall be automatically yanked off the system.
