No fewer than 433 out of the 836 foreign-trained medical graduates who sat the qualifying examination organised by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria failed, The PUNCH has gathered.

The qualifying examination was held at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital between November 22 and 23,2023.

The assessment for the foreign-trained medical graduates was in a Computer Based Test format with the graduates taking the examination in four different centres, namely: BMG Institute of Information Technology; JAMB Professional Test Centre; Kano Cooperative CBT Centre and Treztech, all in Kano State.

The examination comprises a computer-based test, a picture-based test, and an objective structural clinical examination.

Findings showed that most of the medical and dental graduates performed poorly in the CBT.

In the list of shortlisted candidates obtained by our correspondent in Abuja, it was noted that a total of 836 candidates with medical degrees from foreign universities were shortlisted for the examination at the first instance.

The result of the examination, which was also obtained by our correspondent on Monday, revealed that only 403 passed.

The PUNCH reports that every year, thousands of Nigerians aspiring to become medical doctors and dentists enrol in foreign universities, spend a fortune on tuition and accommodation fees, and dedicate between four and seven years to pursuing the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery course.

Among the favourite destinations for Nigerians studying medicine are Ukraine, Sudan, Cyprus, Egypt, The Caribbean, Russia, Belarus, India, Hungary, Guyana, Niger Republic, and Benin Republic. But on completion of their studies abroad, to get a licence to practise in Nigeria, they are required to pass the MDCN assessment.

The MDCN is the body that regulates the practice of Medicine, Dentistry, and Alternative Medicine in the country to safeguard the nation’s health care system.

The MDCN conducts the assessment twice a year. The examination tests the candidates’ ability to apply their basic medical sciences and clinical skills in a health care setting. In a recent interview with The PUNCH, the MDCN Registrar, Dr Tajudeen Sanusi, said the assessment examination was a global practice.

And our own are doing better all over the world. We are actually gifted intellectually but our problem is our politicians that divides us and loots what is meant to develop the country over years. And if revolution doesn't take place in the next 5 years, Nigeria will be worse .

Is this not Nigeria? Just watch, those with connection will manoeuvre their way into the system.

You'll go to the hospital one-day to complain of toothache and a dentist will use screwdriver and plier to remove your teeth.

It's true, things are bad...but, not in this kind of exam.

MDCN no dey take nonsense....same with the Nursing Council

Majority of these candidates simply traveled out to study Medicine because they couldn't get admission for Medicine in any Nigerian university.
Anybody who has the money can always travel 'abroad' to study medicine.
The way Nigeria trained medical doctor troop to write UK exam is the way our brothers abroad also troop in to sit the MDCN examination, many usually fail though.

What I found out while studying in Europe is that they teach you and make you research on what is specific to your profession but in Nigeria they teach you what you need and all the stuff you don't need, so it's important to find out what is in the test. Because if this is true I see no reason why Nigeria does not have world class facilities they are exporting to overseas countries instead of top people traveling overseas for medical treatment.

These foreign doctors were probably not trained or raised to face the rigourous and stressful ways Nigerian trained doctors are conditioned to write exams and pass them despite hardships of medical school.
They're probably not used to negative marking and unnecessary twisting of lexicon in the question to deliberately confuse you into failure.

When they sit for foreign exams like PLAB and USMLE, they'll usually ace them.
MDCN should probably look into itself as an exam body.
