True, but I hope your kids can speak their native language, sha?

It's always delightful to meet a Chinedu or Emeka who speaks Yoruba fluently than an Ayomide struggling with Yoruba language.

Don't say what u don't know.........
95% Yoruba kids speak the language perfectly.........same can't be said of other tribes..........

You want them to bear Ayo, Chinedu, and Adamu so you can use tribalism to finish their destiny?

If I have my way, I will avoid all native names from Nigeria's major tribes (Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa).

A Mark John is more likely to get a University admission from any Southwestern University than a Chinedu. A Jenifer Confidence is also more likely to get a job in Igboland than a Nurudeen Ayoola.

Y'all pathetic decendants of racists and losers will preach one thing and do another.
This reasoning is myopic!! Even if you're John Greene, your State of origin will easily be detected from your application to the university. There must be a column for state and local government of origin for you to fill.
It's not just by merely looking at your names!

Many of them are largely from those parts of Nigeria where they despise their cultures and bow stupidly to Western religions...!

How can an African proudly bear foreign names as first and last names??! What a shame!!!

A lot of them actually claim their Pastors told them their names are limiting them in life... Beautiful names o!

So, if the meaning of the traditional name is bad, can't you get another traditional name that is good??!

My parents totally forgot they had a child. My elder sister gave me my name and I gave myself a native Igbo name when I was in secondary school. Early I had just two English names. When I say my name, the first question will be "where are you from". I don't know why they do that.

A person's name is not your business and should not be your problem. Nobody came to this world for anybody. Enjoy your name, respect boundaries and mind your business!

A lot of them feel ashamed of their names, and look for names that sound "funky" and "sweet".

In Nigeria, most parents prefer their children to bear their extended family name as surname. In recent time, religion has made most of these people to drop these extended family names as they believe it carries a generational curse which they may or may not know of. Most of these people bear their baptismal name and father's first name. For example if their baptismal name is Michael and their father's name is John then they will bear Michael John.
why not bear their fathers native name instead of the white man's name.

Part of colonial hangover and inferiority
complex, common amongst south south
people and some northern Christian people.

We have never heard oyibo bearing negro
names, but black man family will even
take oyibo name as surname or family name.
Such people with oyibo family name are
possibly descendants of slaves.❎❌❎

Compound such oyibo names with black
manufactured religious themed names like

👉Blessing
👉Miracle
👉Anointed
👉Godspower
👉Genesis
👉Lovelyn
👉Chosen
👉King
👉Savior
👉Princess

And many more.

These are English names which oyibo
sef nor dey use, but black man think say
na him sabi the Bible God pass the oyibo
wey bring the Bible📖

Those names are their native names but they changed the meaning to English. I got more annoyed seeing those ones, is it not inferiority complex of being a black person. Something needs to be done by the parents as regards this issue.

Yoruba ethnicity is the most Authentic Ethnicity in ALL the major tribes in Nigeria.......Fact!!!

We northerners , our culture has a lot of Arabic influence.....in our dressings ,greetings etc. Because of Islam.

In SS, look at the names, and mode of dressings, it is heavily influenced by the Catholic Europeans. See how they put cufflings, Bowler Hats and neck ties on their attires.

In SE, look at their first names , mostly English. Look at their Head warmers, it is meant for Winter/Cold Season which has no relation to the South Eastern Climate at all.....this is very european!

In SW, look at their Aso oke, Aso Ebi, their Abetiaja cap[I hope I am correct with the spelling,I am not Yoruba lol]. EVEN in faraway Brazil and Cuba, they STILL wear Yoruba attires for occasions.

I have soooo much respect for Yoruba Culture and its unique Authenticity.......It is not adulterated or watered down like the others.

I once wrote this:

Yoruba Race: You are being manipulated if you do these 11

One thing about manipulation is that the person being manipulated will think everything is Ok and that he or she is doing the right thing. Here are 11 signs to know whether you are being manipulated as a Yoruba human.

#1. You revoke your Yoruba name because it has one of the Orishas in it: Whether it’s your pastor that convinced you by giving you some spiritual excuses or its because you want to travel out of Nigeria, one way or the other you are been manipulated.

#2. You see Yoruba religion as idolatry: all the world religion is idolatry, including all the Abrahamic religion: Christianity, Islam, name it. For a religion to be idolatry, there must be (a). items of worship or of reference to deity like pictures or statutes e.g. the cross, Kaaba of the Bedouin tribes; (b). religion rituals such as the killing of rams, Holy communion; and then (c). Human-God reference or representative and or messenger.

#3. You totally believe the slave trade narration as better explanation for the appearance of the Yoruba race all over the world: This is a lie that we are been told again and again. Yoruba are believed to be part of the pre-Columbia American.

#4. You derogatory call the Yoruba language “vernacular” and shun children and young adult from speaking it: The word "vernacular" in itself is not a negative word as it is simply can mean "indigenous language of a people". If a people are prevented from speaking their language, then who will?

#5. You do not have many Yoruba traditional wears: If you think that putting on of Yoruba cloth will make you look less "corporate", and you don't really care about acquiring Yoruba traditional outfit, you may need to have a rethink about your heritage and start taking deliberate effort about this.

#6. You prefer foreign music to Yoruba: non Yoruba music are all good, in fact you can get spiritual and entertained through music, but manipulation set in when you start making illogical preference to non-Yoruba music and think music about Yoruba Orisha, culture and tradition are bad.

#7. You cannot recite some of the Yoruba poems and rhymes: Poems and rhymes are part of your cultural identity. The poems were created to teach morals and inculcate the Omoluabi character. If you defaulted here, then now is the time not to only start learning but to also teach your children. Teachers in schools should also encourage teaching and memorising of these. Have you seen the beauty of: Toju Iwa, Ise loogun ise, Kini n o fole se laye ti mo wa...

#8. You do not have a Yoruba name or you hate being called by your Yoruba name.

#9. You name your children many non-Yoruba name and prefer to call them by their non-Yoruba names: This is also a sign of been manipulated.

#10. Your children cannot speak Yoruba: They speak other language fluently but you frowning at them whenever they speak Yoruba is inferiority complex and a sign of been manipulated. This is not even in the Yoruba gene. 'A complete child' should be taught to speak not only foreign language fluently but also Yoruba.

#11. You think that explaining of concepts with Yoruba in schools is bad: how better will a student understand than when tough concepts are explained using the student's native language.

I blame the new generation churches for this rubbish.
They make U understand that our native surnames are idolatrous or something.
I also blame some foolish wives who in their bid to separate their husbands from their families, chose to drop the husband's families surname and go with their first name, which is often in English.
Imagine an Igbo.person bearing Grace Sunday!
Our Igbo people are fond of this mistake.
Ngwa people are the worse for it.
We need to go back to basics.

True. During the elections there's a place I hang out owned by a Yoruba woman. Most of her customers are Yoruba and I thanked God they know me by my English name. No sane Igbo man with native name dare enter that joint. Even if you show evidence that you are APC, you'll still be branded obedient/ipob.

You are so right, having a neutral name give you an edge anywhere in the world.

Besides, Nigerians like making big things out of nothing. Europeans and Americans too bears names from other continents, and no one feel inferior about it.
One English Name and One native strikes a balance. If I bear Andrew Chike, I can easily roll with my first name. Who doesn't know Andrew. But bearing two English names dissolves your identity into a pool of inferiority complex and lapdog mentality. You are from Africa and not from the West. For Pete's sake a man from Kenya ruled them with his native name.

The new trend has nothing to do with religion though it is more prevalent among the South South people

a lot of new generation Nigerian Dads want their children to bear their name as Surname, so if the new dad's name is Okoro Michael, once Micheal has a child that bears Jennifer, he will want his new child to bear Michael Jennifer instead of continuing with the grandfather's name

In a few years to come more of those type of names will be more prevalent in Nigeria nationwide!

Majority of Nigerians do not.
Especially with the surname.

It is only common among the SS people.
Rivers and Bayelsa people to be exact.

As much as I know, majority of Igbos bear their native names. [/quote]
