I Need Suggestions On How/what To Invest My Savings On(urgent) by DeevaB: 6:54pm On Aug 03, 2014
I Am a female student , currently in my final year and In my early twenties . Have been able to save close to 150k over time and I sell hair extensions when school is active. I don't want to end up spending this money on frivolities.

I need ideas and suggestions on what I can invest my savings on that will yield a long time profit, after school aside from my H.extension business. I know the money isn't much but I know it can yield huge returns if I invest wisely.
Thinking of buying shares, I don't know Jack on how to.

Dear ever helpful nairalanders, please drop your suggestions and help out thanks.

Hello,

The fact that you could saved upto 150k as a girl and as an under-graduate shows how discipline you are with your savings.

Meanwhile, from the last two sentences of your second paragraph, one can deduce that you've an Idea of what to do with the money, you're just not sure or were afraid to do it.

And let me tell the truth about business/investment, you can only succeed in what you like doing/have passion for and not what some random people suggested for you.

As for the 'share', get a God fearing Stock Broker or check one of this thread on this section to learn more before investing your money.

Hello dear, I stumbled upon your post. I'm glad i did. It's always interesting to meet forward-thinking people like you.
firstly, any investment that pays 10% monthly is either a scam or extremely 'high-risk'
secondly, 'shares will get you money after your first child has finished his university education.....would you wait that long? or would the company you're investing in survive for that long?
thirdly, i'ld also strongly emphasize the post that you can successfully invest in something that you have passion/desire for.....unless you are wildly richer than 150k.
lastly, i have found myself scrapping out my savings recently, because i have invested a lot in a company that i'm looking to establish. It's a tech company, and i simply love gadgets. So if you share my enthusiasm for the internet or gadgets, i invite you to listen to my business proposal. And of course, you'ld have to sign an NDA first. Nice day to you smiley

I have tried what I'm about to recommended, It's very effective but low returns. You hardly would see high returns that are genuine so I advice you make this choice for safety purpose. You said you have 150k, okay! there's something called TREASURY BILL investment in the bank but its controlled by central bank, you invest your money for a minimum period of 3mths and get an interest on your money and at the end of the period the money is reverted to your account which you can also reinvest. Now the interest varies and is calculated on a 3mths basis, it ranges from say 13%-15% for a minimum of 3mth according to central bank periodical updates. All you need do is work into your bank and demand for it. Now note; from my experience some banks don't accept less than N1m while the least you can invest is N200,000 so you just need to top up your money by 50k. Why there is this difference is that the investment between banks and central bank is in millions, so banks just get the cash from customers interested in million denomination while others open up to customers who may afford in bits, collect from different customers and invest as a bulk but the decision on your interest is based with central bank untouched by your bank. One thing you need to know is that bankers may try to convince you to do a fixed deposit instead of this but I think from my perspective TB is better although its upto you to decide. You can demand for your certificate of investment for proof. IT IS SAVE.

What I do is that, while I use Treasury bill to reinvest my N200,000 with interest ranging from N6,500 to N7,500. I also invest the interest with MANSARD Extralife Savings Insurance. You can find MANSARD at a GTBank Branch. With Mansard you choose a period (minimum 2yrs) that you intend to save money without having access to it on till the period matures. The amount you intend to save lies within you. I am using a monthly plan of N5,000 and I placed Standing order on my normal savings account for the money (N5000) to be removed on a monthly basis for the period of 2yrs. You can still pay in extra cash into the Extralife saving if you have and then keep your deposit slip for your reference. This has interest rate that is also small but the buttom line is that the small cash you would have put into your normal savings account where you have access to withdraw with ATM is saved in bits. This I agree may be in bits but Its saver. This is what I can help with, you can call me 2348068799154 if you need more info. Atleast I think I was reasonable. Goodluck.

Hmmm, this is the second advise to follow my passion which I think is the honest truth.

You welcome!

Since you've decided to buy shares(which is good for future purpose), I will advise you checkout for good ones. Like I said before, get a good broker who's ready to assist you. These are what you need to know before you chose one;

1. How often they declare share bonus and dividends.

2. Price- do their shares price usually increase, decrease or just remain stagnant.

3. The highest price ever per unit. This will probably give you the knowledge of what to expect in the future.

4. Demands for their shares.

5. How long has the company been in existence and their past in terms of shares.

My dear, My candid advice for you is this:

Do not invest all your invest in one place.

Split your money and spread them across reliable investment like FBN Capital market, invest in your business presence online to multiply your sales and keep some as cash for future opportunities.

Based on personal experience, my candid advice for you is to invest your money in a safer, low risk, diversified and well balanced investment like mutual funds. There are couple of them out there like the IBTC, ARM, FBN etc.
The good thing about mutual funds is that your money is managed by seasoned professional fund managers by investing in shares, bonds and real estate. In no distant time you'll come to appreciate the power of compound interest. No wonder it is often refers to as the 8th wonder of the world.

You can take a cull from my experience, when I graduated from the uni, I had this passion for investing and with the little savings (20K) I had then I invested in one of the mutual funds around. After some few years I decided to check the worth of my investment, to my surprised the total worth then was more than triple of my initial investment.

My passion for investment was rekindled again, I started learning more about investment generally and decided to build that investment. I set up a DD (direct debit) with a token from my monthly salary into that fund and started learning more about investment in shares. Right now that investment alone is worth over 2m and I'm doing more of shares on my own.
It's exciting and fun, though it involves loads of hard-work in learning, patience, dedication and commitment. You can start small and grow, with those qualities, you'll become confident and and more experience.
It's good to see that you have a small business that you're doing, think and strategize on how you can grow and expand your business. Read and learn, sometimes, things wouldn't go well but that's how you'll get to learn and become experienced in the game.

I hope this helps, once more I welcome you to the world of endless possibilities.

Cheers!

Let me share a secret with you guys - If you want to make good money, take calculated high risk investment moves - Its only when you are in your 50s and 70s that you should invest in Mutual Funds or other risk free vehicles where 3% return annually will generate millions of naira.

But how will you make such amount before your 70s? start a business and invest in high growth companies.

My dear, grow your business first, re-invest in your business growth and spread your income or savings in other growth business and money market market instrument.

I post what I do.

I have an act with FBN money market, run an internet business that is profitable and at same time invest in US shares.

You've been helpful, Thanks a bunch.

It depends on the company involve. Some declared share bonus and dividend every year while some declared theirs two time in three years or every two years or more.

I can only say about GTB share, best so far in the banking sector. For instance, I've received numerous shares bonuses and dividends between 2008-date. It's one of few companies that were able to recuperated fast during and after the recession.

@DeevaB
Have you found your investment windfall? I see you have shrugged off quite the investment ideas you have read so far. I suggest that you play the waiting game.
Take a few more walks, visit a few more offices, do a few more things that you didn't do before.
Wait for that 'aha' moment that you get soo pissed at a service that you want to make it better, or something you dearly need that is not there. Truth is, everything around you can be an investment idea. And most wealthy-rich people did not conform to the norms.
Everyone's importing stuff, everyone's buying shares&stock, everyone's doing Hyip. These are ok, they'd put money in your pocket, but they can never give you financial freedom.
As a lady, you may as well marry and have a mutual savings with your husband. It's even better than the advices here. Don't choose to invest your money, try to solve an immediate problem.
Eg. I wanted to watch manutd vs swansea so much yesterday and i went to a local viewing centre. I paid 50naira and everyone paid same too, but i could not stay because most of the people there smoked and i have allergies. It would cost a lot less than 200k to start a biz two times that size, that will restrict smokers to one side and non-smokers to another side.Epl runs for a year. If 40ppl came every weekend, you'll make about 70k in profits. Include the amount of money you make from selling those cigarettes and drinks. That's how to invest your money.
