Hello Guys, am a ToolPusher and am gonna give a handful of advises to prospective O/G workers.

I have taken some time to peruse this particular topic and have come to the realization that most people here are motivated by "salary".
certain questions here are outrageous. I bet you, if a recruiter walks in here, he or she will be interested in only a very few number of people, you know why? because there is an overwhelming show of lack of focus and inability to research (problem solving skills). Questions like "how does a chemical engineer fit into an oilfield career?" shows little or no knowledge of the dynamics of the industry. So, why do you want to join??

To the main topic, The upstream O/G can be grouped into 3 segments. you have the Operators (likes of Shell, Exxon, Addax etc). You have the drilling contractors like Transocean, Shelf drilling, Nabors drilling etc. You also have the Oil servicing companies like Schlumberger, Baker Hughes etc.
The Drilling contractors man and operate the drilling equipment. This industry is primarily hungry for Experienced hands. Green hands or fresh recruits are few at any given time. Degree may not be a major factor and also note that certification does not in most cases grant you an edge, Unless you are on an accelerated course such as Assistant Driller programs or Trainee Rig Supervisor programs offered by some companies. To get in, you need to be at the right place at the right time! find the recruitment consultants and HR firms that employ for the O/G. You will be surprised that a recruiter for a rig operating somewhere in Niger delta is based in the UK and is listing the vacancies on LinkedIn and not on Nigerian Dailies.

For the Operators like Shell and Exxon etc, you neeeeeedddddd a good degree. By a good degree, i mean an Engineering degree! The argument exists that other type of graduate works in the O/G, agreed! but statistically speaking, Engineering degree is a preferred option. This is similar to banking, a customer service rep will never make a branch manager but a marketer will. You get my point?.. Now the world has become freaking competitive, Bsc and Beng is no longer considered a big deal, so, go get a masters degree and hit a 1st class if you can! yes, a 1st class is better than all the certifications you'll ever get to supplement your degree. You don't need to go learn Promax or WellPath or Eclipse, your employer will take care of that! Just get a first class!. Another thing, prove that you're research oriented. Publish papers, go to conferences and network!! If you have a couple of publication up your sleeves (conference papers or journals), you're in! trust me. Anybody can publish a paper, whether you're in school or a graduate, employed or not.. be productive! identify with SPE, attend conferences and present technical correspondences.

For Service companies, you need to have a brain! a productive one!. These people are the donkey of the industry. They do the Job! A good degree, being first or top 5 percentile in your class is a profile booster. If you have publications to your name, thats an added advantage. They don't care about certifications, They will train you, in fact, they provide the best trainings in the industry. Save your money.

So you see, your academic performance is a deciding factor how easy things get when you're out of school. For the students, take your studies seriously.

Pray alot.

Hi, please I need your advice, I studied electrical engineering, and I wish to break into the oil and gas sector, can you advice on what I need to do, being that I have no experience as regards O/G. You mentioned accelerated courses offer by some companies; which companies offer such. Thank you.

@ 27naira.

I must confess this your post is frightening.

i heard you mention First class?

Dont you remember what it takes to graduate with 2.1 let alone first class?

The truth is that First class is mearnt for people that are academic genius.
Whose brain dey hot like fire.

Forget what some people boasts, I WOULD HAVE MADE FIRST CLASS, IF I WAS SERIOUS WITH MY ACADEMICS FROM YR ONE......THATS A COCK AND BULL STORY, WHICH ANY 2.1 HOLDER CAN TELL.
Talk is cheap.

Oil and gas companies have many departments responsible for doing many different things.
How many people in the oil and gas company graduated with first class? If that is the dumping place for first class materials.

And since i was born, i have never seen any vacancy they brought out without including 2.1 holders also.

Then if you prove your competence in aptitude test, you will be taken.

so where is all these first class talk coming from?

inshort in the whole Nigeria, how many top managers of Oil and gas companies graduated with first class?

And secondly one must not study engineering course, to work in the oil and gas company

If not, they wont have Geoscience segment in the oil company.

Pls let us not frighten people here.

I need your advice on an issue Geo Men...
If you have a business that earns you almost 500k a month and its far from related to geophysics and you are a final year student in geophysics...
And this business is a long run business that might not fold...
will you ever still think of practicing geophysics??

if yes, what aspect in the geo field will you ever think of specializing....

thanks for your prompt responses...

Where have we got it wrong in Nigeria that person with your profile can be jobless for more than a year.
It is well with us... Wishing you good luck soonest!
