I think what dey r asking u indirectly is "how much is ur service worth?" Dey want 2 know hw much u value ursef. Give them a specific figure and tell them u r open to negotiation. Say it with confidence.
oboy! I love this. Hope it doesn't backfire.

Those days when i just finished my OND, went to apply for a teaching job in a public secondary school. The principal was a thick Igbo man:

EMPLOYER- How much will you like to get paid monthly?
ME- 650k!
EMPLOYER- Oh, forgive my slip on tongue! I mean to ask how much do you want to get paid on monthly basis, NOT FOR THREE GENERATIONS?!
ME- Yes, monthly basis, 650k...
EMPLOYER- Security!!sadsadsadsadsad

The most controversial interview question that has cost many job applicants their dream jobs is "how much do we pay you" question, though it comes in many twists.

Now my experienced nairalanders who hv successfully crossed this huddle should please tell us how best to answer this question.... HR managers/personnels, we really need your immense help. Thanks!
Tell them to pay you what is commensurate to your input at your level of entry according to the company's structure for your grade.

Speaking strictly from experience, this is what professionals call a trick question. The employer wants to see your level of thinking and awareness. The best way to answer the question is to reinforce your answer with what you bring to the table.

For example:

According to prevailing job market rates, an entry level engineer makes 100 to 150,000 naira per month, I would like to be paid Bleep,Bleep amount due to the fact that I have several years of experience in this field and can confidently carry out my job functions.

or a better answer

While pay is certainly a factor in accepting a job offer, I value other benefits associated with working with such a prestigious company. I would like to be paid Bleep,Bleep naira as I feel it would be a reasonable compensation for my services.

The key here is to be confident and smile, don't appear to be needy or nervous!

Bleep,bleep would be?

The thing is that in my former company, I rejected a salary augmentation from #350,000 to #400,000.

By saying this, my employer should be able to know how much of a salary I'm going in for?
so what is ur interviewer says that the company's payment is below that of ur former company undecided

MaziOmenuko:

If the pay structure isn't available after your research, then grade yourself depending on what you have to offer and, most importantly, the scale of the company and its location.
For a position that didn't require years of experience; mostly entry level, 80k - 100k comes to mind. I mentioned location because from my little experience working in Lagos, accommodation and transportation is more demanding. Someone earning 60k at Umuahia will have a better savings and better quality of life than someone earning 80k at Lagos.

For a position that required you to have 1 or 2 certification and expertise, this is where it becomes tricky. They are hiring you because you had a masters (which costs nothing less than 300k to acquire), or because you have a NEBOSH certification in safety, or a certified QMS officer, Plant designer, Chartered Accountant, Programmer or you have up to 5 years of working experience; then place yourself in an assist managerial level and demand 180k - 250k for the start.

I don't support the idea of asking a HR to pay you according to their scale. There's a reason the question was thrown at you; don't throw it back to them! And, I keep saying this, what if their salary scale is 40k per month?

Hmmm... Am short of words... You really treated some crucial points... Thanks!

I attended an interview with one INGO and was asked this question by the HR, and the position I applied is for experience hire, what I told them is N450,000-N500,000 per month.

Any amount you feel comfortable with! It's common sense, if the average salary for that field is 100,000 to 150,000 it's best to stick with something within that range.

Rilwayne001:
Truth is, if you’re interviewing for entry level position, you have practically no say in the pay. Almost 100% of companies have their pay structure and know how much they will pay you already. If Zenith bank, for instance, pays entry level employees N3m per annum, you can’t get more than that, except you have relevant experience. So most times, at entry level positions, this question is inconsequential, but it may be your undoing. Imagine asking for N10m as entry level in GTB – it can annoy your interviewer and an otherwise inconsequential question can mar your chance. Personally, I –and people I know that are top management staff in big organizations – always advise that you don’t say an amount. Respond with something like: “ABC Plc is a well-structured organization and I believe you will fairly place me where I fit within the structure (knowing full well that you’re entry level), with commensurate remuneration.” But if pressed further, you can state a sum, preferably a range, which you must have researched. A good way to research is to ask people that work in the organization what entry level pay is or you put a thread in a forum like Nairaland, where you are guaranteed of good
response. You may add 1 or 2m on top. For example, you know Ecobank pays N3m for entry level position, you may call 4m for them at the interview. If however you have some special skills or qualifications, you can charge a premium for that. For example, you have CFA, very marketable qualification, you can be daring and request for pay that is more than what is ordinarily obtainable for that position. Or you are coming withImperial or Harvard certificate. Experienced hires are also in good position to negotiate....

I have an interview in an advertising and marketing communications firm next week. I have research on the pay structure for an entry level in the field but no possible idea. Would it be wrong if I mention 90k-100k as my pay? Thanks!
it will be wrong because since these companies or firm have a particular salary structure, anything conturary to this structure becomes a problem for the company to adjust to,hence you might just fail the interview solely on that criteria......
Re: "How Much Do We Pay You?" Interview Question by tellwisdom: 5:27pm On Oct 11, 2014
genchukky:
The simple answer is,there is a particular salary structure for every department in a company,so when you are asked the question, tell your interviewer that the post you are seeking for has a payment structure the company offers and you will be ok accepting that plan............but make sure u have an idea of the salary structure before going for the interview..

And if he divides your pay in three places since he knows the company's salary plan more than you? ?
Re: "How Much Do We Pay You?" Interview Question by Truckpusher(m): 5:27pm On Oct 11, 2014
But you guys should try and find out the salary structure of companies while in school as soon as you're getting ready for the Labour market.
You might not necessarily know 100% if you don't know somebody in-house that will give you every detail meticulously.
If you have the desire to work with any outfit ,find time and study one or two things about them.
This can save a lot of headache in the future of your career.else you jump into slavery all in the name of work grin

Just a small point of "grammar" ; since you have not started working for them "how much do we pay you?" is wrong. It is a subtle point but still annoying everyone cheats their way through school these days and don't grasp the most basic elements of grammar, very annoying!!
Please correct the title

which point did he treat? once you mention the amount you re expecting from them you ve lost the job.
tell them any amount they can offer you is ok. I've done this severally and trust me I got more than what I expected from the company.
imagine you telling them 200.000 when actually their package for the position you are going after is 450.000

most legitimate companies have policies,so an interviewer cannot just come and share your salary into three because as soon as you start working in the company you will know these policies, and the interviewer might lose his job and even go to jail grin grin

Funny indeed.
You've not met some interviewers that interviews you as if he owns the company.
I tried this same thing you did and this guy that knew me too well and my family looked straight into my eyes and he said "Are you seriously telling me that this whole thing isn't about the money"? I pretended not hear and he said to me "this is a question". And I replied with a smile that the question is too harsh. grin
Everyone laughed because something in my eyes betrayed my true feelings......Yes it was all about the money. grin
