I pay N13,450 per month. That's paying about One Million Naira (N1,000,000) to watch TV for only 6 years. That's the price of 1 plot of land in some outskirt of Lagos. Chai. I cant wait or the success of this move.

To be on the conservative side, let's say they have 1,000,000 premium subscribers. If my math has not failed me, that's N1,000,000,000,000 (someone should help me write this in words) for 6 years.

Let's wait and see how long it will take before any bill is passed and implemented. When it comes to making laws that will benefit the common man, we know how our reps and senators behave.
But, it didn't take them anytime to approve the borrowing of ONE BILLION DOLLARS proposed by the clown to FIGHT the bokohaRAMS that they're currently negotiating PEACE with.
Meanwhile, I don't see DSTV doing any monopoly here. Our own indigenous providers too are very greedy!

Its simple. This is democracy and free market. If they want to beat DSTV, the should provide us with a cable service better than DSTV and gbam! DSTV would be out of the market before you say jack.

This is just a ploy to bring in one chinese mediocre company that would end up ripping Nigerians off, like they are doing with startimes.

Good idea...but the main thing keeping DSTV prices up is the money they (DSTV) pay in royalties to air certain programmes and channels.

For example, I enjoy a certain program called 'Extant' on Mnet channel 101. It is made in the US. DSTV must pay the American maker of the programme some money to air that programme in Nigeria and indeed across Africa.

And all those EPL matches you watch....DSTV pays the EPL company some cash to watch the match (Ever wonder where clubs like Man U get the money to pay Rooney and Mata their high salaries? Part of the cash comes form Television money...which includes money paid by TV companies across the world to air EPL matches to the English Premier League...which is then shared amongst clubs..and not just EPL...La Liga, Serie A, even the Champions League and the Europa League...and other sporting events).

And DSTV also pays channels royalties too, I beleive (That is how Nigerian channels earn some cash for their budgets.).

So, prices may have to stay up.

I wonder why they have succeeded in maintaining the monopoly for years. We need competition in the satellite TV market. If not we can't keep blaming DSTV.

That is the essence of competition. MTN was selling a Sim Pack for 35000 naira and offering seven days validity on recharge cards before Glo came on board and now sim cards are being sold for 100 naira.

I think the best solution is to have a federal Govt funded Cable Company on the level of DSTV, like NNPC mega stations in the petroleum industry.

Dstv is a private company driven by profits and costs.

Dstv is in a Oligopoly market, not in a goods market.

In Oligopoly...competition is tough..the company that has good strategy, management, good service and quality product will survive.

...and for new companies to enter the market is not simple.

It is not a must to have a dstv, if you want to patronize local satellite tv just leave dstv...

Where are educated nigerian business people ?? for a country that pride itself as the most educated and resourcefull cant come-up with just one satellite tv company that will give dstv a run for its money, instead of blaming dstv...

Quality comes at a price...if you cant afford go local.

In SA we have 3 satellite tv compnies, dstv, Toptv( useless) and EtvHD( its free,no subscriptions) and Siyayatv coming next year..no one here or the government is complaning about the pricing. dstv offer the best content... and they are in competition with SABC stations in terms content.

I pay R295 for my dstv compact...should I complain NO. that is what I can afford. If I want more I cannot pay R663 for premium,...
