The House of Representatives moved on Tuesday to contain the “arbitrary” subscription rates charged by Multichoice for its Digital Satellite Television services in the country.

The House observed that high pricing by Dstv had made access to its “premium” programming difficult for the majority of Nigerians.

It also noted that lack of competition in the digital satellite broadcast industry had encouraged a monopoly giving firms such as Multichoice the “undue advantage” of blocking the efforts of other firms to enter the market and crash prices.

Lawmakers particularly opposed a “rigid” subscription policy that permanently billed subscribers “whether they are at home viewing programmes or not.”

A bill to stop such stranglehold on the industry passed second reading at the House on Tuesday.

The bill, which was sponsored by a member from Adamawa State, Mrs. Aisha Dahiru-Modibbo, sought to amend the National Broadcasting Commission Act to guarantee openness and competition in the industry.

The long title of the bill reads, “A Bill for an Act to Amend the National Broadcasting Commission Act to Provide for Competition in Nigeria, to Promote Efficiency and Expand Opportunities for Participation of Nigerians in World Markets, while at the same time recognising the Role of Foreign Competition in Nigeria and for other Matters Related thereto.”

Leading the debate on the bill, Dahiru-Modibbo said while Nigeria was not against foreign participation in the local economy but such involvement should not be to the detriment of Nigerians.

She noted that there were indigenous firms which could also render premium satellite broadcast programming to Nigerians, but complained that “deliberate actions” by monopolies stifled the firms.

“In every country, measures are taken to protect the people.

“What is happening to us in Nigeria does not happen elsewhere on the continent.

“It is high time our regulatory body, the NBC was positioned to protect Nigerians from this arbitrary actions,” she stated.

The House Deputy Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, wondered why Nigeria, one of the countries with the largest subscriber base of Dstv services, hardly received the kind of “subscriber-friendly offers” that were offered to the citizens of other African countries.

“You have a situation in the telecommunications industry, for example, where you are billed as you go or use your mobile phones.

“You pay for what you use. We should be having pay as you view or watch as well.

“Why should Nigerians continue to pay for Dstv services whether they are at home using the service or not?” Ogor asked.

He cited Kenya as one of the countries that had taken measures to contain the excesses of Dstv and other foreign digital satellite TV service providers.

Seasoned broadcaster and Chairman, House Committee on Diaspora Affairs, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, lent her voice to the debate, supporting a call for more subscriber-friendly pricing in Nigeria.

While I agree with this move, I have something to point at:
1. Are their eyes/ears just being opened to what Nigerian have been complainng about?
2. Is it that the usual perks to them have disappeared of dwindled?
3. [color=#770077]WHEN COMPARING DSTV with PHCN, I THINK OR PHCN IS THE MOST CRUEL MONOPOLY WE CAN FIND ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD
. Charity begins at home: phsician heal thyself. FIGHT THE INJUSTICE OF PHCN OVER HAPLESS NIGERIANS. Free N750 illegal charge running into billions of Naira monthly imposed on Nigerians by clueless govt and imperial loyalists

What a display of arrogant idiocy! So it's better to be a slave to fellow black man? It's better for Asians to be our economic slave master in our country? Big time generator importers like Mikano, JMG, Jubaili, Leventis, Mantrac and SAKR are still selling white man's products like Perkins, Lister Petter, Cummins, CAT.

@MadCow1,

Stop trying to reason logically with the average Nigerian, they lack the capacity for such.

They are always sentimental and have a false sense of importance. They also like freebies and hate hard work.

RESPECT ON YOUR ANALYSIS OF THE SITUATION

Its not about too much money or not.. This is business not Charity.. That London you are talking about, Cable is not free. And this is not a 'Conspiracy Theory' I wonder where that came from, its just simply analysing the situation on Gorund.

I would love it if all the seats on a Plane were like Business Class seats and we all got the same treatment as the Business class flyers do, but sadly, better service = more money. This is Basic Economics 101.

I would like for all Mercedes Benz cars to cost the same as Kias and toyotas, but unfortunately, that kind of luxury and craftsmanship costs a shiitload more money...

I would love it if all my suits were Italian and swiss hand crafted, but that kind of quality does not come cheap..

If you cant afford the Premium package, get the cheaper packages. DSTV is not the only cable satellite company in Nigeria.. Startimes, MetroTV, CMTV, CTL, etc... Why do you have your eyes on DSTV?!! Cos you want the best.. SIMPLE!! grin

Why havent you asked the government to force Coscharis to reduce the cost of Bentleys and Benz's?! grin

Madcow you've made very valid points and always bow to superior arguements even when its at complete variance with my position.
Now like I said, you've made very strong points, but there's no point rubbing it in people's faces. I know you're relatively well to do because I've followed you even from TEHn days, but you have to appreciate that the vast majority of your countrymen are struggling.
For me, it doesn't say much about your wisdom when you posit that its okay for DSTV to charge what they like just becos they bring a lot of content to bear. Was MTN bringing content to bear when they charged 35000 for a Sim in '02? Same Sim that is now been offered for free in the streets of Lagos today.
Also there is nothing to laugh about in HiTV's failure. I for one felt very sad for them. Their one off show put DSTV on their toes and made them open up other bouquets for Nigerians of less social class.
The hostile takeover they was the best their analyst could do at the time and could have worked had they been bailed out by the FG. If you any cable TV is just going stroll into the market just like that without doing something aggressive to unruffled DSTV, then you're basic economics is suspect or naïve at best. HiTV took a gamble. And any gamble it had a 50% chance of success. Sadly the other 50% happened. But I'm proud their initial fight saw hundreds of thousands of Nigerian home of less social class granted access to cable television albeit diff suitable bouquet options.

Okay.. That said, this is not about being well to do or not. Unfortunately, the world isnt an Ideal place. Every service or product in the business world is divided along class & quality and the control factor for these are the PRICE. I will for the heck of it throw a couple of examples out there;

Airline:: You can Buy an Arik Ticket for 11,000 Naira that gets you cramped and uncomfortable seat close to the back (near the toilet) with one small shared armrest, a small over used toilet, a small plastic cup of water or cheapass juice and a thoughtlessly baked pastry... OR.. You can pay 45'k for bigger seats, wider armrest, a hostess at your beck and call, an reserved toilet, hot food served to you on a tray, as much drinks as you would like for the duration of the flight and a much more comfortable flight.

Now you would think that those who are flying Business class have it good, but it gets better.. For a little more money, you can get on a private chatter flight and enjoy Onboard entertainment (movies, music and news), sleeper seats, a full service bar, Attendants at your beck and call, faster check and check out, special treatment and exclusive pampering..

Even this can get a whole lot better.. Chatter a Custom G6 Jet.. grin

Electronics:: You have a Samsung TV, I have a Samsung, the next guy has a Samsung, e.t.c.. Even though we have the same brand of devices, yours is the smart Tv, mine is the Super Smart TV, the Next guy has the Genius TV.. Whereas the other guy can off his TV from the office, watch his TV on his phone inside the toilet, watch 3D movies and all, ours cant.. But then, these are not even the pinnacle of Televisions.. I saw a Bang and Olufsen television in a friend’s house and was like WOW!!! The price of that TV?! #Foggerabout.. shocked

In phone technology, I just realized that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 sold by Samsung Niigeria in Nigeria and Africa is of a lesser quality than the variant sold in the U.S and U.K market in terms of some content. Example: The Note 3 sold by Samsung here is the N-900 version, which does not come with 4G and some other internal specs.. The N-9005 is whats sold in teh UK and is of a higher spec than the N-900.. Its unfair but if they sent you the N-9005 you would have to pay N-9005 money.

Infact, I could keep going.. Name one comodity/service in this life that does not have varying levels.. Almost NONE!! The reason is because the better it gets, the more money it costs the provider. In the U.K, matches are not shown live on cable TV because it discourages people from going to the stadium. For you to get a match live in the UK, you buy it like Pay-Per-View on your cable.

Its hypocritical of us to go after DSTV for the premium package price. Its called 'PREMIUM' for a reason. They have graded their services like the Hotels grade their rooms (from executive to standard), like Airlines grade their seats (First class - Business - Economy), Cars (Custom - Limited edition - full option regular - basic opition regular), Phones (Vertu - Porshe - Samsungs/iphones/Blackberries - Tecno - Sagem/talkabout) grin , Houses (from detached - semi-detached - face-me I face you), Generator (from Industrial - iPassMyNeighbour), Restaurants (from Southern Sun/Chinese restaurant - Mamput), Same way even water is graded from (Spring - Still - treated - 'pure-water') grin, Same way Food is graded from (Orishishi - 'Madam put 200 Naira rice with no stew or meat’).. grin .. Same product, different variants, different packages, varying prices..

Nothing is free in Freetown my friend.

I would love to drive in a full option brand New Range Sport Supercharged for the price of a Kia Picanto... grin (I hope you are laughing at this wish). grin Even amongst the Kia Picanto owners, their is still levels.. Its called 'OPTIONS'..
Do you want Manual or auto?!
Do you want Cassette or CD or Aux or a combination of all?!
Leather Seat or fabric?! 4 cyclinder or 6?
Sunroof or none?!
Tinted glass or transparent?!
Alloy rims or Wheel cover?
Normal dash or Nav screen?
Sirius XM Satellite radio or FM/AM alone?
Onboard Assistance or not?
Power Windows or Manual?
Chrome grill or plastic?

Every Commodity in life comes with options.. All these options come with a price..

You spoke about MTN.. grin Let me take you on that;

When MTN came into Nigeria, there were 3 Telecoms companies in Play then and all offering Mobile Telecoms services: MTN, ECONET and NITEL.. Before MTN and ECONET, the cost of getting a CDMA mobile phone on Nitel was reserved for the 'Well to do'. grin When Econet and MTN joined in, the system changed (not by telling Nitel to reduce their prices), but by the new companies offering better services than Nitel for way way less than Nitel.. Even at 35 thousand for a Sim (without Phone), it was still cheaper and better than NITELs cellphone. Naturally, even those who owned the Nitel migrated to MTN. Then amongst the 2 remaining competitors, MTN's sim was still pricier then because whilst ECONET was still in Lagos, MTN had reached Port Harcour and Warri faster. And remember that calling across networks were expensive then, so people naturally started buying more MTN than Econet..

Now one of the things that drove the price of services down was not necessarily competition alone, but also the cost of doing business reduced for most of them as they built their own exchanges and did no longer have to use Nitels overpriced and outdated equipments.. Thats when MTN built the Yellow Band project.

Now even amongst the Phone matter sef, options dey;

MTN trutalk
MTN SmoothTalk
MTN Smoothtalk Plus
MTN Zone
MTN free night call
Post-paid
Corporate.

etc.. All carry different content and the more the content, the higher the cost.. Same with Etisalat, same with Glo.. Even with the competition amongst themselves, they still will never give you 1gb data for 1 Naira, nor would Etisalat offer MTN's premium package for cheap.. Max you would see is for a few cents less than MTN. grin

I am not happy at the demise of HITV. It profits me nothing to see either company do better than the other or fail. I am a consumer and if the deal is better and well priced, I would migrate to that end.. HITV sadly didn’t get it right the first time.. Anybody coming into the market has DSTV to compete with. Unfortunately, they came late and unlike many Nigerian companies, DSTV is very forward thinking and innovative. They know they are the best and yet keep trying to outdo themselves. Maybe of a company had started with DSTV as far back as the 90's when they were not as big and as grounded, it would have been easier to break into the market.. But any company coming in now should not try to compete with DSTV but rather create their own market from scratch and stay out of DSTv's lane..

DSTV has earned their status as Kings of Cable TV in Africa.

So please forgive me if you see me supporting the DSTV business.. I am not coming from a 'well to do' perspective, I am coming from a purely business perspective and nothing else. It’s like Dangote trying to enter the cubed sugar game by getting the Federal government to force St. Louis to reduce their price.

If you use the 'Poverty Level' reason to push for the prices of DSTV to be reduced, then its only fair that we go after ALL SERVICES.. Car prices, Hotel Prices, Airline Tickets, e.t.c.. Sadly, the Science of Economics can never allow for that.

Thanks for reading this long epistle.. cool

You are asking the wrong questions.

The question you should be asking is that why can't Nigeria produce something on the scale of DSTV (And by extension, why can't Nigeria produce things like televisions, radio, computing, etc).

The answer is that most Afrcan countries are resource dependent. Since the 1960's, we have been using our resources as a means of getting money to import and import.

Whereas, Asian countries , especially those berefit of resources, focused on education, science and technology and industrialization.

You are on the right track....the problem is, like most Nigerians, you think that our economy is not prospering because of the whites. It isn't so...it is because we have become so resource dependent....that we have forgotten to innovate and invent.

So, until we become an innovative economy like China, and Japan...the whiteman will continue to dominate us. Better support or make your leaders to get our economy off oil....and into industries.

Are you sick in the head?

Nigerians are so emotional and will always shy away from the truth, that is what is killing us in this country. So because DSTV is not a Nigerian company then we must sleigh them? When HITV was available we all knew the terrible service they offered, we still patronized them until they folded up... Is that dstv's fault? Dude, Nigerian or not, u can't shy away from the truth. It is left for us to work hard and create a service that will be in the same standard to that foreign company that we so much hate. Until then, DSTV will still rule. Of u can't afford DSTV premium then pay for family. If u still want afford family then buy gotv, it is still owned by multichoice. If u can't afford neither then work harder. Or go and hang urself. From what u wrote it is very obvious who is sick in the head here.

Please don't talk rubbish abeg! They had to create the product, test it in their own developed market first before looking for bigger market in complex environments like Nigeria with no constant electricity & credit facilities.

anyone who hates dstv can go back to nta

heh

i am am from ilorin,

when i was growing up satelite tv WAS the exclusive preserve of the rich - it was the rich kids that got to watch stations like MTV

the total entertainment i got from tv was 5-5.30 pm every day

outside of that, it was very old tv shows and movies.

so i can only laugh at this ridiculous whining of entitlement

some of the channels broadcast by dstv are national channels - eg bbc.

sad that our govt have been unable to get their ish together

nta programming has declined steadily over the years.

i doubt if one can recover shows like checkmate, behind the clouds or even koko close.

where does consumer protection comes in, i believe in a monopoly market government regulation still plays a big role.

we through the govt should be able to negotiate a better deal with Multichoice

there is no harm in that, consumer protection cut across industries take it or leave it.

update your shallow brain ..nigeria had Hitv but dstv killed it. this legislation is to protectthe newly launched CONSAT cable tv

In microeconomics theres thing called competition....your Hitv got killed because it could not keep up!! Legislation or not those who can afford dstv will continue to use it..

...and dstv will continue to better their product. Like now with mtn-edge....

I was always wondering why supersport studio in nigeria is like a box compared to the one in kenya.. nigerians like to complain as if they have better altenatives...

Dstv is not only in nigeria...you cant force it to do what you want!

Other countries are not complain even SA. you always want to be treated special like gods.

consumer protection is for poor service, not pricing.

if you pay dstv and they fail to renew your subscription as at when due; if they sell you a defective decoder; if they over charge you for a service - then you have a case.

you cannot force a price for a voluntary service.

smh for nigerians. this is the same mentality one faces as a professional. people do not want to pay for service - you do a design and some eejit says its just a drawing - why should i pay this much?

BLAH BLAH BLAH.. At the end of the day South Africans are an embarrassment to blacks all over the world, how can you allow the whites to dominate 90% of your economy and sit down in big houses smiling while your people suffer in Soweto? SLAVES ..GO FREE YOU LAND
Another clone of stupidity. Average South African black lives better than average Nigerian. Their GDP per capita is above $6k while date of Naija is $3k. RSA workers earn higher minimum wage than Naija. RSA govt provides housing, medical and social welfare to the poor unlike in Naija where the poor are taxed. Do you know why Kerosine is sold to the poor at the highest price -N250/litre while Petrol is sold N97 to the rich and middle class?

why are you communicating using a medium developed by the evil Europeans [internet] in a language of the same evil europeans ]english]from a device created by the Europeans [computer]?

bizarre pan-Africanist kool-aid.

better go and live naked in the bush off the land away from the evil european inflences

ditch your phone and get a talking drum while you're at it

the arguments just get more and more bizarre

That's a s.tu.pi.d thing to say, something i would expect to hear from a white racist. Blacks(mainly afro-americans) have invented many things that members of the kkk and nazis use everyday, but do you think they will stop using them? Also the internet was not invented solely by whites it was an American government project comprising multiple races.

The modern day computer you are using right now was invented by an African-American, Mark Dean. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Dean_%28computer_scientist%29 he also invented the colour PC monitor.

Also the blueprint for the first ever phone was drawn by an African-American by the name of Lewis Latimer, he also invented the light bulb.

You know the reason we use English as a lingua franca so why would you say that? You want me to speak Zulu? I'm a IGBO Not a Zulu/Xhosa slave.

Lol..

From the bottom.. You asked is I was sick in the head?.. I am Mad Cow, what do you think? grin

Europeans can see me in any light they so please.. I dislike fhucking Indians, but if I see an Indian restaurant that sells good curry, I am gonna eat there and recommend that restaurant to my Niggas.. I cant control how anybody feels about me.. Neither can you.

Maybe you should spend less time being spiteful and hateful because you think Whites and whoever else hate and dispise you and all worth not..

I wonder if you intend to one day buy a car as they are mostly all made by Europeans, Indians and Chinese and all these races think Niggas are scum. Maybe you would just fight the power and ride a horse.. grin

Maybe you should get infected with Mad Cow and see life from a much more interesting perspective like I do..

#You should see a psychologist though, I may be mad, but I know lunacy when I see one and Hommie, you need a shrink and Jesus fast...

Okay, so you have just admitted to everybody that you are sick in the head, i rest my case. Forgot to add I drive an Innoson SUV. Have a nice day.
