Complication Behind Bride Price In Nigeria by emmysoftyou: 12:33am On Nov 10, 2014
My friend dated a crossriverian girl and he is ready to settle down with her.
But when he travelled to crossriver with his people to to seek her hands in marriage from her parent. They accepted and after few moment the elderly men came in,they gave him the list of items if he can be able to meet up with their expectation.
He saw the list of those elderly men brought to him.He marvelled and told them,he wil give them feed back.

My guy is bit frustrated and i dont know what to advised him,
so if yu re married? How do you manoeuvred those list of items given to you?

However,
I thought parent should be happy that finally someone is ready to settle down with their daughter but instead of that they scare guys away with expensive payment of bride price.
Why is the rate of bride price so expensive and alarming in southern nigeria?
Something needs to be done to curtail the bride price in southern nigeria...

In my own opinion, this list is not that expensive na,nia be say you never see better list. When you see items like:

80 giant stock fish
100 tubers of yam

Ask for an Mbaise list and cross check with your list to know the difference. In my place, where you have bride price written for the mum and dad is done also and same price was collected during mine although it is known as back money and not bride price. Also the clothing items for the mum and dad.

If your friend is not buoyant, he can ask his soon-to-be wife to plead with her parents/people to reduce the no of items or price on the list.

In my own list also, bride price was written as 5 naira + but on that day they demanded for 5k + nothing less and the fuel has finished on the way story too. He has to hold some emergency money ohh!!!

Not everything on a list is mandatory, buy the ones you can and forget the ones you can't shior! imagine 'costly shoe' mscheww.

The people who write those lists see the marriage as an opportunity to get what they have wanted/want but can't afford, so it's all up to you and their daughter, if she's not ready for marriage then she should stay with her parents till someone who is ready to shoulder all her family's responsibilities comes along.

Btw OP, which one be say the parents of a girl should be happy someone is finally coming to marry their daughter? Are you doing them a favor or what?

Lmao grin

The "carteen" of beer is not for the MIL alone, they use it to entertain their age grade or whatever union, you know you have to call a meeting to inform them your daughter's getting married.

what kinda MILs drink beer & get high on snuff?
by their list, you shall know them. i don't mind buying ram, clothing items, tubers of yam, soft drinks for MIL. however, the moment i see beer, snuff, indian hemp, paraga, etc then the marriage is off. an old man once told me if you want to know what a wife would become, check out her mother. cheesy

I agree that a girl's mum influences her life but that's not always the case you know, a bad mother can have a good daughter and vice versa so one shouldn't rush to conclusions.

Adults drink beer na, that one no mean anything jor grin.

They can only be happy when someone is doing them a favour? Marrying of a daughter is not cause enough for happiness?

You can choose to see what you want but you have to be sure before you credit people with your suspicions.

I did read what he wrote.

Are you saying there's a blessing that comes with quoting you? What am I missing?

You are deliberately refusing to see what he wrote because it's very obvious, that's why I asked if you didn't see it or just wanted to quote me.

Before nko? There's a blessing that comes with quoting me na.

OP wrote "that finally someone is ready to settle down with their daughter" what does finally mean to you?

1 & 3. Nope, I'd rather not jump into conclusion about something laden with meaning. You may suspect but give that suspicion life till it's reasonably proven. There's no logic to that conclusion of yours.
Finally could just that, finally, without any negative meaning, it could also mean that he thinks he's doing them a favour but we don't know that's what he meant for sure. Giving people the benefit of the doubt is a good habit, cultivate it. smiley

2. Lucky me. What have I won?

Aren't you just funny? Did I not give the OP the benefit of the doubt making my suspicions into questions? I left him room to clear or confirm them but no, you had to call me out for even having those suspicions, yet you are preaching to me about benefit of the doubt, I see you grin.

Since we are already on this path, I'd like to make it known that, somethings are just clear cut, eg, the word "finally" let's not dance around it.

You just won yourself some benefit of the doubt, use it wisely.

You better believe he is.
YOU are the one stuck in that situation. He as a man can simply go marry a different woman and live happily ever after from even a different culture or country (Mehn I love being a man kiss) that does not practice these archaic things and where parents actually have shame and aren't requesting for things like "3 WHITE PANTS/Underwear".

If he does that, na you go siddown remain for your papa house dey old dey go as you watch your friends getting married and giving birth to their 2nd and 3rd babies.
So you better get it right, he IS doing you all a favor.
You may say whatever you want to say to make it sound otherwise to save face, but you know it's true.

You dey craze well well, like she can't decide to marry another man dumping your yeye a$$.

The same way you feel you can get another woman is the same way she can get another man, that's for women whose lives depend on marriage anyway, see this o, gone are those days o tongue.

And last last, this new man of yours would have to still buy something as uncomfortable as "3 White pant" for an old woman in the village. If he were as smart as the last guy, he'd do the same thing and go marry from a wide selection of viable global options. kmt. Either way, you would be screwed come time for pre-marital discussions because of the bushness of your parents because YOU CANNOT MARRY UNLESS SOMEONE, ANYONE, BUYS PAYNT FOR YOUR MOTHER IN THE VILLAGE grin grin grin tongue

Some things should be personal. I see that list and I just think "This is poverty. Do I really want to be linked to this family?". Or do you think it is only the groom and his family that is being judged in these pre-marital proceedings? The girl's family also are in the lime light and can either show themselves as a decent, dignified lineage...or a pack of starving homeless people who have never seen this strange thing called underwear before.

A girl whose parents intend to give her man a list like that, she better audit that nonsense before it meets his (and his family's) eyes. She better not be stoopid.
