So early this morning i put a link to a facebook group that has lots of freebies and useful info i thought may help some prospective GRE student, mr. justwise or mr. mod may i know why it was deleted? DDamiit, the entire post was deleted too? Yes there's a paltry no. of businesses --largely indian, foreign -- which solicit students patronage on the site but that's a drop compared to the value anyone would get as i found out while doing my own prep over a year ago ( thorny/tricky quant and verbal questions posted on the forum from users of the 22,000+ sized group; a repository of free GRE docs/books, free keys to gre mock tests etc etc) . I never paid a damn doing my own prep and i don't imagine any one here would. In the past I've played devils advocate when you delete links people put here including mine cos i see the point of establishing a rich vibrant community where we can find all the useful information herein. But now i can't. Does nairaland allow people upload free ebooks? Are there 200+ students posting tricky GRE questions on the forum and other posters to answer them? That's why i dropped the link. Out of sheer generosity and not any thinly guised financial gain. Ok so i suggested people who have extra cash to spare can try magoosh but what has that got to do with anything? Do i run magoosh? Lets say i was on some other forum and i met a nigerian and dropped nairaland.com cos i see it may be useful to her. The mod sees it and deletes it only because nairaland displays banners/ads.. well, you see my point? My complaints aside, there's still the possibility that there's an entirely legitimate reason i haven't considered, and i'd like to hear it.

But i just explained that the group caters to a different user base: hardcore GRE students. I was one. I used the GRE group last year but i am still on nairaland finding and learning relevant visa /student related info i can't get there or else where. My feeling is that you haven't really thought this through and i understand.

It only positions you as a dictator. It's someone's post and the person must have taken his time to arrange and source for such information and little heads up on why it was deleted doesn't cost you anything.

It does and i will only do that when its necessary or when the poster asked. Whether the op spent years gathering the info is immaterial.

not a rift of some sort. Just giving an opinion that's all, nothing else attached to it. I don't get credited, but we need to give some people some certain due respect.

If we can take our time to criticize the govt. we should also do same for ourselves as well. It hurts to actually gather such information and it gets deleted. Yes, he is actually right to delete the post as it might take away traffic off nairaland, but a heads up on why the information was deleted won't do any harm to his ego either. He's been doing it since.

For me,I don't see how it will reduce NL's traffic for a forum like this that's already well known..mind you I met a lady who's from the caribbean and she comes here.We are all learners..we do not learn and source from NL only.

External links like govt websites or embassies does not need traffics to survive but forums, blogs, agencies that rely on money coming in from ads do and its wrong to divert traffic from here to such websites.

That doesn't make sense to me. On the fp don't we have threads that have links/ sources attached to them? Do their posts get removed by mods because of the fear of traffic diversion? is there a differnet code of conduct for travel section that users are not aware of?
