Yes a lot of Nigerians are corrupt and dishonest. Nigerians always scream about the fact that the leaders are corrupt but it takes a corrupt follower to become a corrupt leader. Honesty is a word that has found no place in the dictionary of a typical Nigerian.

A critical look at various topics on Nairaland talking about critical issues such as corruption, mismanagement, wasteful spending always end up in PDP vs APC achievement, Akpabio vs Fashola, GEJ vs APC etc. Supporters even go further to abuse the op for raising the topic even at times the topic is culled from a newspaper with a link. Most of these topics always ends up in PDP vs APC abusing each other. Also any topic raised about misgovernance is seen to be an APC topic. For example, if the issue is about say Akpabio, a lot of his ethnic and state people, even PDP members will rush to support whatever he did and to castigate the others for raising the point and they are quick to remind them that it is not their state.

If we continue like this, how do we hold our leaders accountable? Yes the state in question might not be yours but we have to be interested and honest about leadership in Nigeria. A lot of people in Lagos are not from Lagos, so should they keep quiet and watch misgovernance since it is not their state? Some in Lagos visit their own state once in a year, so which state will they be more interested in and how things are done?

Because of this divisive and dishonest thinking, Nigerian leaders have continued to use it to their advantage and it is working for them very well. When an issue of corruption or misgovernance is raised please let's discuss within the context. The leaders are accountable to us.

Let's be honest with ourselves and stop supporting any corrupt act whether the person in question is a member of our party, religion, region or ethnic group.

Be honest because you have a conscience and know what is right and wrong!

bros,I think your topic heading is wrong . What you have shown so far in ur write up is that nairaland political discussants are sharply politically divided. Now where then is the dishonesty and corruption in nairaland?secondly , these so called people that argue on political issues day and night here on nairaland ,how many are they? Nairaland has a membership of over 800,000 members ,go and look through the people that argue here as if they have no job ,it is always the same set of people and they are not even up to 500 members ?so will u use the opinion of 500 members to determine the opinion of 700,000 members or even use it as a yardstick for 170million nigerians? This is my point, corruption is everywhere and no nation is immuned against it. Majority of nigerians aren't corrupt and they want a better nigeria and good governance.the major problem with the nigeria majority is the feeling of political indifference ,majority nigerians don't even know the name of their local goverment talk less of knowing the local goverment chairman . People believe politics is for a certain group of people and until all nigerians decide to start asking questions from the lg chairmen to the president ,nigeria will remain the same . Please don't use nairaland as a case study for nigerians .many of the opinions people talk or shout about here is not the true reflections of the nigerian majority.

@topic, you are very correct. Even without using the site as a case study, I have come to realise that in my day to day activities. Nigerians are majorly a corrupt and very dishonest people. What baffles me most is the level of religious piety they display.

Hehe... This is soooo true. Nigerians are hypocrites which is why I don't take religious leaders serious. The worst set of Nigerians are those that claim to be the most religious.

No, the topic is not wrong, it's a very wide topic of discussion that is why I had to choose Nairaland as a case study. You can add yours too. Majority of our problems in the country is corruption and support for dishonest people.

Corruption lives in our society! To break it further;

1. Why do students pay lecturers to pass examinations?

2. Why do most Nigerians jump queue when they see one?

3. Why do most Nigerians working in government offices inflate contracts sums?

4. Why do most Youth corpers influence their state of postage?

I'll be back with more.

ok ,now I get ur point,I won't like to push my own point further, let's both agree that the nigeria political setup or system reflects the nigerian society. This topic is far far wider and bigger than nairaland and I think it is a very interesting one but I know it will soon be spoiled by partisan political posts very soon .

Your observation is spot on. It's sad that we clothe everything with tribal or religious sentiments, all the time to our detriment. Notice how people shamelessly come out to support 'their own' even when the accused is guilty. The cry is always 'witch hunt' or that the accused isn't the first to commit such a crime. It's shocking, even in churches and mosques, we are reluctant to call a spade a spade.
Sadly, our leaders are a direct reflection of the masses, hence our inability to call them out. The remedy we've worked out is to patiently await our turn, then steal as much possible as quickly as possible sad

you just did what the OP said, played the blame game...how about you think of this...: Imagine you work in a bank and have a customer who is your friend, and one day he comes to the bank, and there are long queues, and he approaches you to help him get his transaction done, that he has no time to queue up, would you, A: help him get his transaction done so he doesn't have to queue? or B: Tell him he has to do the right thing by queueing up?? Also imagine yourself as that customer in that bank where u have a friend who works there and you are in this same situation, will you A: approach your friend to help you jump the queue, or B: stay on the queue no matter how long it may be, and even turn down assistance if your friend offers to help you jump the queue? if you can answer this question honestly within yourself, then you can get the OP's drift..

I don't see how the content of the thread matches with the title. Anyway, the problem is majorly from the Umbrella Camp. They have been propagating falsehood against the opposition and in favor of their Lords and masters in Wadatta Plazza, Aso Rock and their respective government houses. Whenever we bring the truth to the fore, they see it as an affront and rather than address issue, they result to insult. I am one of the people that insist that celebrating a Man like Akpabio variably means celebrating mediocrity. Akwa Ibomites are living in penury despite their huge allocation monthly. Instead of growth, infrastructure, economic improvement, job creation etc, we see few but expensive roads in capital city, stadium that has no impact on their economy and was opened with N1 billion, increased government spending to run its affairs, father christmas government dishing money to celebrities etc. Their young people are PA to another PA to another PA to another PA to a councillor, young girls are washing plates and doing the job of a househelp. Anyway, they seem happy with Akpabio, I wish them well.

Why should I give or take bribe when I ensure I do the right thing? It's only when one wants to cut corners that you bribe.

1. Sort courses so you won't have to read!

2. Pay government workers to influence award of contract when the company is incompetent of delivering a job.

3. Pay money to secure a job even when your qualification does not meet selection criteria.

4. Pay bribe to NYSC officials to influence posting.

5. Etc etc

majority of Nigerians aren't corrupt, because that majority aren't in positions where they can be corrupt in the first place, one can only be corrupt when he or she stands in the way of what someone else wants/needs and most Nigerians aren't in the way of what people need...

Very true. It is a spiritual thing. Most spiritually inclined people want to fight corruption now because if you don't it will affect the lives of children. I am even more pessimistic about everything. I f we don't fight corruption now there will be a second colonialisation of Nigeria with the country tied to the apron stir he of the western world because we would not be able to run anything ourselves. The worst president we have had so far in the fight against corruption is President Jonathan, even Abacha had two or three empowered bodies prosecuting arguably a select few who were actually corrupt but for Jona it is carry go as long as you don't criticize me.

The response to this thread shows that a lot of people are guilty of one corrupt act or the other hence less comments. If this thread were to be about Hollywood and their artiste, then it would have hit front page and probably page eight!

Let's do a soul searching, as you blame the leaders, how corrupt free are you whether as a gate man, messenger, manager etc?

Let's be honest with ourselves!

The op made it sound like only PDP supporters are guilty of what he complain end about. How do you explain this?

[Also any topic raised about misgovernance is seen to be an APC topic. For example, if the issue is about say Akpabio, a lot of his ethnic and state people, even PDP members will rush to support whatever he did and to castigate the others for raising the point and they are quick to remind them that it is not their state].

How many times have we being told by APC supporters not to talk about Fashola and the fraud taking place in Lagos just because we aren't Lagosians? Next time be a little more objective so people could take you serious.

That is the dishonesty I am talking about! We always immediately identify with 'our own' even in misdeeds.

What objectivity are you talking about? If you read and comprehended what I said, you'll see where I see where I gave as an EXAMPLE and funny enough, that is where you had to quote me out of context.

Do you think we don't understand what that means? I do not have a problem with the issue you raised about corruption as that generally is the case but making it sound like only PDP supporters on naira land complain about issues raised about misgovernance while APC supporters don't is the highest form of dishonesty. Perhaps you need to check those lines again to see my point.

More than 95% of Nigerians are dishonest and corrupt. The remaining 5% are either hiding under one pretext or another or they are yet to attain the position to exhibit their criminal tendencies. Religious leaders , public officials and politicians come tops in the class.
