Why Nigeria cancelled US military training – FG

on December 05, 2014 / in News 12:46 am

By Caleb Ayansina

ABUJA—The Federal Government, yesterday, gave reason for the cancellation of the training of Nigerian soldiers by American security experts, attributing it to logistic problem.

The U.S. Government, through its Embassy in Abuja on Monday said in a statement that “At the request of the Nigerian government, the United States will discontinue its training of a Nigerian Army battalion.”

But Nigerian government explained that it did not cancel the training, but that the condition placed down by US government was not healthy for the security of lives and property of its citizens, particularly those in the north east region.

The conditions, according to it, include withdrawing of some military equipment from the battle field, so that the American could use them to train the soldiers.

The Coordinator of the National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, who stated this during a routine briefing on security situation in the country, in Abuja, said the government would not expose its citizens at the mercy of insurgents because it wants to train its solders.

However, Omeri maintained that the two countries were not at variance as being insinuated by some people in the country. “Nigeria and America have strong military relation till date. It’s still ongoing and strong,” he said, disclosing that Nigerian soldiers had concluded two phases of the training out of the three.

Omeri explained that the third phase had to do with logistical components which the Americas did not provide but instead relied on Nigerian Military equipments, which was currently in use in the troubled states.

Am not surprised to hear this.
That would have been the killer stroke!
Withdraw the equipment from the field, hold onto it for long to ensure BH does maximum damage then come out with a story that the NA is unteachable.
Meanwhile our country is in tatters.

Good move FG

I don't usually believe in conspiracy theories. But this Nigeria-US relationship is trying hard to convince me on America's view of Nigeria related terrorism...

Na wa for US

So they expect Nigeria to withdraw heavy weapons used in fighting BH for training.

What do they expect Nigeria to fight BH with.?

Fellow Nigerians

Are we sure US is not the main sponsor of BH

Are we sure US is not viewing Nigeria as a sleeping giant that must be destroyed now in order to eliminate a future rival like China India.

Am not against breakup but killing innocent Northern Christians and taking over their ancestral land without their support is evil.

Biafrans I hope we are watching and learning.

Biafrans we must develop our indigenous military technology by encouraging our higher institutions to develop indigenous military technology to counter threats like this.

Omeri explained that the third phase had to do with logistical components which the Americas did not provide but instead relied on Nigerian Military equipments, which was currently in use in the troubled states.

So the equipment on the battle field are been use by un-trained army? That shows why military men abandon their armoury and run away anytime boko haram attack them, because they don't know how to use what they have in hand.
In my own opinion, i believe american knows nigeria has the men and equipment to crush boko haram, why not release some equipment to U.S for training so that it will be use effectively on battle field after training, instead of giving it to boko haram.

Tis circumstances like this that get people asking questions only the war-god Huitlipopochtl can answer.....questions like "do we go into a flower war with the US?" or "How many sacrificial American victims can we hope to obtain from this endeavour?....

Irrespective of whatever international politics that is being played out, it is pertinent to say that the Nigerian Army is the 'BIGGEST ' loser at the end of the day in all of this.

You are wrong

This will gradually free the military of Western influence aimed at making our military second to them.

If GEJ can instruct the military to work with our higher institutions in weapons development, in years to come, Nigeria will become Africa's China.

Good point no doubt and I have to agree with you, but I think that situation is still a long shot away bearing in mind the prevailing situation we now find ourselves in.

Good morning mate!

A step with great determination can help a man cover a long journey at greater speed and shorter time.

Eg Pakistan built her atom bomb few years after India due to great determination

Even if its Pope that make this press release, I will still not believe.
so this people think we are this gullible?
so all the military hardware that this country have is in the north fighting Boko Haram, yet we are struggling to win.
Are we saying if Nigeria is attacked from South now, we will need to withdraw military hardware from north, to defend from South?
I don't even understand, what military hardware are we currently using on book haram that is needed for the training? AK 47? Tanks? RPG? jet fighter? what else? This is all we have? is this what they want to train the military on? In a sane country, this kind of statement will have consequence.
mtcheew!

These people can lie for a whole generation.... Why not just say the training has not been effective as is not just training you needed to handle the insurgency but also intelligence sharing and weapons.

All these lies and propaganda you people share.... Diaris God

Ok o.
I'd have said that US is stup.I'd for making such statement. But, on a second thought, I think they're worse that Stup.I'd.

Withdraw the weapons from the field and fight BH with their Teeth or Jazz?
This US people are yet to tell us what it is we've done wrong.

Re: Why Nigeria Cancelled US Military Training – FG by chronique(m): 6:47am On Dec 05, 2014
What kind of training would require a nation at war,to pull out equipments used in protecting human lives from the war front? I've always said this;America has a big hand in this boko haram crisis cos their body language and the way they have related with us on this insurgency issue, gives them away. So,until you pull out equipments from the battle front, the soldiers cannot be trained? Smh.
