Lagos Residents Lament Absence Of Infrastructure (Fashola's Projects Sinks) by biafranqueen: 1:33am On Dec 15, 2014
Some residents of Isheri North Estate in the Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area of Lagos State have lamented the absence of infrastructure in their community, saying the government abandoned them despite paying heavily for social amenities.

They said since they arrived at the area, they had been grappling with the problems of bad roads and lack of potable water, among others.

A resident, Olakunle Rufai, explained that the residents had been funding some projects after many attempts to draw the government’s attention to the issues proved abortive.

He said, “Rainy or dry season, we are in trouble here. It was the Ogun State Government that constructed the road that entered into this community from the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. We have spent millions in buying broken blocks and bitumen for our roads without any support from the government.

“Apart from the bumpy ride we endure, we do not have potable water. To dig a borehole here costs about N500, 000 and every time we tried, we got salty water. I have dug borehole three times and I have a neighbour who has tried more than five times and they have been wasted efforts.

“We are now buying water and I spend about N90,000 on the average every two weeks on water. It’s been very frustrating.”

Other residents, like Mr. Kayode Ogunje and Rotimi Bisiriyu, said they had had to repair their vehicles many times after they were damaged by the poor condition of the road.

Ogunje said, “Just yesterday, I changed three of my car’s shock absorbers and had to pay N95, 000 for the repair because of this road problem.”

PUNCH Metro learnt the estate is owned by the Lagos State Government and most residents bought their parcels of land under the Isheri North GRA Scheme.

They reportedly moved in around 2009 after the state Governor, Babatunde Fashola, made a public announcement that it was ready for habitation.

It was gathered that apart from the huge payment for a plot of land, each of the residents were made to cough up N700, 000 per plot for “development and infrastructure levies”.

Our correspondent was told during a visit to the area that house owners now paid over N3m for the levies, without any construction work being done by the government.

It was learnt there were over 2,500 plots in the estate.
It was learnt there were over 2,500 plots in the estate.

Several letters were said to have been written to the Lagos State Public Works Corporation, and another government agency, New Towns Development Authority, which were all met with unfulfilled promises.

Another letter, which was delivered to the Governor’s Office and dated August 18, 2014, stated that there were more than 200 structures in the estate.

The residents lamented that they were suffering due to the problems of “bad roads, inadequate drainages and lack of potable water, adequate electricity supply and functional police station.”

The Chairman of the Isheri North Estate, Mr. Biodun Awofeko, said like previous letters, government had yet to respond to the last effort, which was delivered through DHL out of desperation to get an audience with the governor.

“But we are hopeful that one day, they will do something. And that is why we are again calling their attention to our plights,” he added.

The Commissioner for Works, Lagos State, Mr. Obafemi Hamzat, could not be reached for comment as his phone rang out.

A text message sent to him had also yet to be replied to as of the time of going to the press.

Is Fashola not the one where the buck stops? When national stadium was over run with prostitutes, you guys blamed the President. We can't have it both ways you guys come on with the hypocrisy. Call a spade a spade. When were you last in Lagos outside of the Island. I can't believe people think Fashola is working for the common man undecided Only private schools and hospitals built. Everywhere was flooding when I was there last come on! When they tried to show what Fashola did it was all private owned organizations that managed and funded the progress. You guys really have to read outside of NL.

The Governor has been put on notice already and Lagos has been found to have been bamboozled with creative accounting

Least we forgot!

A government audit of 57 local councils in Lagos State has indicted eight, accusing their officials of squandering at least N224 million of public funds on a range of questionable expenditure and unimplemented contracts.
The 2012 audit report covers the state’s Local Government Areas, LGAs, created and recognised by the Nigerian government, as well as Local Development Council Administration, LCDAs, created by the Lagos State government, but not recognised by the federal government.
Those accused of wasting public funds are Agbado Oke-odo, Surulere, Coker-Aguda, Egbe-Idumu, Eredo, Iba, Ikosi-Isheri, and Lagos Island East.
The audit assessment, seen by PREMIUM TIMES, accused officials of the affected local authorities of “financial recklessness”, and blamed them for wasteful spending.
The report also criticised another set of eight local government areas of piling up debts and failing to meet targeted revenue projections.
The LCDAs in this category are Eti-Osa East, Ikoyi-Obalende, Iru-Victoria Island, Yaba, and Agabo-Oke LCDAs.

Do you agree with me about your state, Anambra? Don't tell me the place has been transformed recently because I won't take that from you.

Channel your criticism to your area. Your governors in part of Nigeria are the least performing governors in Nigeria.
