An ardent supporter of FGM.

Tell you what: why don't you improve upon the act while maintaining it's cultural significance by applying this to your daughters when you eventually have them, and extend the practice to your wife when you get married?

Your disclaimers at thr end of your posts are at best - pathetic.
@bolded, here we go. Unecessary words okome. No need getting emotional. Lol@ardent supporter, I actually intend to start a rally soon, maybe even form an awareness NGO! Our banner be like...bring back FGM, our women need to be cut! cheesy

Seriously though, what would be wrong in putting two marks each on my daughter's vlitoris if it is completely safe, the vlitorisis not cut off, just marked. They still enjoy a fulfilling sexuaI life and they get the cultural recognition and accolades. Win-win.

@bolded doesn't sit well with me. Pls explain (in very simple English ) before I reply. I don't want to misunderstand you.
There are different types of female circumcision:

1. Marking the vlitoris.
2. Cutting off the clit.
3. Cutting the labia minor
4. Cutting the labia major
5. Cutting the vag1nal wall itself.

My take: For those who practice it, why not encourage them to do no. 1, teaching them to do it in a medically safe and healthy manner, and abandon the others. This will stop any hidden form of FGM and prevent the pains and complications that arise from those who secretly do it.

They did the same with traditional birth attendants. When they saw people still patronized them despite the dangers involved, they changed strategy and started to educate the birth attendants on hygiene, better and safer practices. This reduced the number of women who died from childbirth in the rural areas.

Why not do same for female circumcision?

this is the dumbest post I've seen on NL so far this year. first of all, why do you assume that opposition to FGM is a western thing? All progressive ideas must be western in your eyes abi?
second of all, do you even understand the horrible cultural significance of FGM?
FGM is an existing reality in many parts of Africa. It is still being practiced today in many different forms.
First of all, yes it is a western thing. Our womenfolk(not even the men),fought against the abolishing of female circumcision for a long time and even till now most ardent supporters(thank you efe smiley) are women. So don't tell me anything like the women were supressed or against it or stuff like that. The practice died down following aggressive western public awareness programs against the act.

No, not all western ideas are progressive. I assure you of that.

"horrible cultural significance of FGM" smh, whose culture?? Definitely not your culture if you are African. Of course if you say 'horrible societal significance and implications' especially in this our modern era, then I'm likely to agree with you.

I agree with your last paragraph. So why not educate such stubborn followers of the practice on how to practice healthier and medically safer methods of female circumcision. The promise of free education on the matter will bring them out of their hiding places and will reduce the amount of complications that follow the genital mutilation they practice.

For me, it's simple. A'int nobody touching my baby. I don't care if you had 12 babies of your own and pulled them all out of your body with your very own hands all by yourself in the jungle while single handedly hunting a water buffalo and cooking food for your family of 15. Makes absolutely no difference to me. If I even detect a hint of any of this archaic tendencies it is over.

Please educate me on the benefits of FGM. What is its cultural significance? Why should it be kept alive?

I've mentioned them before. Let me say the ones I know.

1. Welcomes the child into womanhood. Same for guys.

2. Gives her respect as a woman in her society.

3. She is allowed to speak in matters affecting the community she is in.

4. Some women says it beautifies the female genitals.

5. She is allowed a woman's share of inheritance in her family. If not circumcised she will still be given a share but as a girl and not a grown woman

6. She is married off with respect and the full support and backing of her kinspeople.they will always look out for her in the marriage.

Cultural wise, it was a part of a people's identity and maybe shouldn't have been swept underfoot just like that. They should have made it better, safer, less traumatizing, and more humane for those who practice it.

Honestly, you're really beginning to annoy me now, Crackhaus.

Read the first couple of comments on this thread before my first post. What do you notice with regards to the question you've just asked me?

Secondly, why do you assume / think I would have any qualms quoting you directly if the need arises? You should know by now that if I have a problem with you, I tell you straight up to your face man! Or you think I'm afraid of doing so?

And finally, did you even read, no. Scratch that. Comprehend my comments in my first post? Did I not state very clearly what I thought of the writer with regards to her pretending not to know what was done to her daughter?

I absolutely do not have to justify myself to you. I'm only doing this because you've dragged innocent people into this. You were very wrong with your assumptions and you need to do the mature thing - own up to your mistakes and apologize to them.

The venom is / was unwarranted and extremely unnecessary.

Fvck if I annoy you, like that's supposed to mean something to me.

So a mother in the story who was present right there will see her own baby girl being mutilated and pretend not to know what happened, but instead choose to post her story on the internet for geniuses like you who don't pretend, to help her read and connect the dots...

Tell me, do you even read what you type? You've so got to be kidding yourself cheesy

I asked you a simple question in the beginning, do they now use just cloth and hot water to circumcise girls?
If the answer to this is yes, only then will you be sure that the child was circumcised...simple!

This really is saddening and I daresay your comprehension skills leave a lot to be desired.

Your original question was baseless, and because it was baseless, rather than waste time pointing out / explaining the obvious to you, I directed you to highlighted excerpts within the story to make your deductions. Or are you incapable of reading between the lines? Is that what your grouse really is about?

You obviously have issues with some of the posters on this thread, and in your confused state you let your paranoia get the better of you by launching needless attacks? To what purpose? What have you really achieved? You seem to think people are "out to get you"? Let me ask you something: Do you really think you're that important to me or anyone else here? You definitely have a chip on your shoulder to assume so.

Oh well, keep clutching at straws. You aren't worth another moment of my time. Now feel free to have the last word and spew as much rabid vulgarities as it pleases you.

The dance floor's all yours.

According to my comprehension from what is written, someone used a cloth soaked in hot water.
I subsequently asked you if they use just hot water and cloth to circumcize girls, it was a sincere question - how is it baseless?

Your problem is you thought I asked you the question to make you look stvpid, and you got defensive.
All you had to do was say yes or no, or explain what you deduced instead of giving me rhetorics.

Your rhetorics were:
1) A baby was screaming - Efe, don't babies scream when bathed?

2) The woman said don't touch the bag or she would spoil the things inside of it, the same bag where a cloth was brought out - so how do you know what else was inside the bag?

3) The mother left the room when the baby was crying - no such thing was implied and if you deduced so, what mother would leave a room where her own baby girl is being circumcised because according to you, she's pretending abi?
And where is the blood loss that's supposed to accompany normal circumcision?

My comprehension skill is quite fine, your presumption skill however is off the charts, and only fit for a prophet - or are you now a prophet who deduces things without knowing the facts? cheesy

I ask again, according to what is written in the story - do they use just cloth and hot water to circumcise girls?

No I don't support FGM. I do think it wouldn't have been all bad if female circumcision had been retained for cultural/historical significance. I use 'had' because it has all but been eradicated.

I don't think FGM and female circumcision are the same thing.

Child circumcision , Female genital mutilation... Look I'm not here to go back and forth with you. I'm just surprised to read from a "new school", championing what should've been scrapped from our society and culture long time ago.

A child was thrown in the air( and without head support) inside a tiled floor kitchen-in the name of tradition. Thank goodness for multiple hands on deck( mom &da friend) that saved that baby from long term disability while she was vertically dropped into the tub. I respect traditions as well but common sense should prevail.

FGM is not abolished. It is widespread in Africa in various forms from the "mild" to the extreme.
Most of the ardent supporters are men and also many women who maybe want "honor" or higher bride price for their daughters (FGM is supposed to keep the girl as a virgin or chaste. well, duh... it destroys or reduces her ability to feel sexual pleasure) which translates to higher honor for the family. This is the cultural significance of FGM: control of female sexuality.

Some ethnic groups don't practice it so it's not a western thing. You just say so because you know deep down that it is a barbaric act and you feel that all opposition to barbaric acts must come from the west.
it is mostly education and female empowerment that will lead to the eradication of the practice.

Whatever it was, I hoped I wasn’t a victim of it. She had said it would make Olamma to be faithful to her husband and that I would grow to understand better.

how ironic.
